Interesting scheduling idea I read today for a 14-team league with 8 conference games:

Every school has three principal rivals they play every year. They play the other ten teams on a rotating basis. Teams 1-5 home and away in years 1 and 2, and then teams 6-10 home and away in years 3 and 4.  That allows every school to play everyone else in the conference at least twice in four years. There are no divisions, so the CCG would just match the top two teams (by record, with some kind of tie breakers).

Seems like it would work. This would stop stupid things from happening, like going 12 years without playing a team in your conference. And from a rivalry standpoint, you'd play your top three rivals every year. You'd have to sacrifice your fourth-most important rivalry by making it a twice every four years deal. Big whoop.

They really are screwed, though.  At this point, only three "power" conferences can schedule them, the Pac-12 won't take them, and the Mountain West is already at 12 members.

There's, like, nowhere for them to go.

I don't think they're screwed, and I don't think they need to join a conference. If they go undefeated, I think their SOS will be tough enough to get an at-large bid to one of the Access Bowls, which would be better than they ever did in the MWC during the BCS era. And they've got plenty of exposure, thanks to their ESPN contract. And they've got decent bowl tie-ins if they fail to qualify for one of the Playoff/Access bowls. They just need to keep scheduling games against Pac 12 teams like Washington, Wazzou, Oregon State, and Utah, plus regular games against teams like Notre Dame and Texas, and Boise St, San Diego St, Central Florida, etc. They don't need ACC or SEC games to have a good schedule, especially if they could get additional Big 12 opponents (KSU, OSU, BAY) more regularly.

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said Friday that if the Power Five conferences don't get the flexibility to create their own bylaws, they could form their own "Division IV."

"It's not something we want to do," Slive said on the final day of the SEC meetings. "We want the ability to have autonomy in areas that has a nexus to the well-being of student athletes. I am somewhat optimistic it will pass, but if it doesn't, our league would certainly want to move to a Division IV. My colleagues, I can't speak for anybody else, but I'd be surprised if they didn't feel the same way." The power conferences essentially are asking for autonomy to institute their own rules, most of which would be cost prohibitive for smaller schools. For instance, the SEC wants to pay the full cost of college attendance for athletes, provide long-term medical services and offer incentives to players who complete degrees. University of Florida President Bernie Machen doesn't believe the current system can stay in place. "We're in a squeeze here," he said.

I've got a friend that works in advertising for Budweiser and he meets regularly with media executives from ABC, CBS and the rest of the broadcasters in marketing. The word going around those circles is the Big 12 and ACC is about to get carved up to create one conference. Right now TX and OK want to see if going southeast could get Neb and Penn St interested in going if ND would join in. OU and TX see that as a academic and cultural fit but lots of exchanging parts would have to happen. He said tthe general thought would be that OU and TX would be going further south
