We're officially a second-tier conference already.  We need to add revenue in any way we can.  The practical part of me is for it but the sentimental part of me is annoyed.

One potential 4D chess move - if the Big 12 can get to the PE table first coupled with the Florida State/Clemson stuff with the ACC, perhaps the timing all syncs up so that the ACC is squeezed/implodes. Their best leftovers then come to the Big 12 (some combination of NC State, Va Tech, Duke, Louisville, P-burg, etc.) and then the Big 12 is positioned for an influx of $$$ (TV, advertisers, etc.) due to there only being 3 major conferences (with the Big 12 still obviously clearly No. 3).

I have zero issue with a long term sponsor but getting PE money seems like a foolish short-term play.

I mean we already play for the Dr. Pepper and Phillips 66 championships.

Does PE need to be involved to get money from a sponsor? I thought I was pretty clear that I was ok with a sponsor.

Generally my experience is that PE will make every decision based on what is most profitable for the PE firm in the short term, with little to no regard on the long term health of the the entities/people/institutions they invest in. I don't know specifically what harm they could do, but I know they will do whatever they can to maximize their profit.

Yeah short-term profit rules. What fat can be cut? That's always the first, second, third, fourth question that is asked. The conference offices are pretty lean already, I bet. Are there teams or sports that don't add to the bottom line? Those are at risk. Nothing is sacred unless it adds to the bottom line or is legally required.

If we're letting private equity buy 20% of the conference, doesn't that mean they are entitled to 20% of all future revenue? How are we supposed to remain viable that way when our revenue is already lower to begin with? Seems like it's only a good deal for the first few years until the cash is spent.

It could be smart if you know you’re scamming them (i.e. selling to them at a higher valuation than you’re worth).  It would depend on the terms of the deal, but with only 20% ownership it would be a minority stake so they shouldn’t be able to force anything on the members (unless a majority of members agreed).
