Any insight into the tier 3 content deal that KU made?  My KU friends tell me that it was a stroke of genius that the rest of the conference can only envy since the rest of the conference are retards and squandered their tier 3 rights on useless venturs.  They also say that the Jayhawk content is more readily available in Texas than stuff on the Longhorn network.

All content is more readily available in Texas than stuff on the Longhorn network so that isn't really saying much.

If your KU friends have something other than Time Warner, and they live in KC, they will hate it.

KU and MU are both already in far better conferences than the Big 10, anyway.

KU fans that tout some sort of Big 10 desire do so for ego.  They're in a better situation right now, and they know it.

he played bb at  Notre dame,  worked in the ad  at both ND & Duke - this would  lead me to think he is happy with the status quo as those two schools don't want realignment to go much further

Rumors that some members of the AAC and MWC got together last week to discuss starting their own conference.  Some are saying it's because Cincy is talking to the Big12 (typical realignment rumor where I don't believe anything is close to happening).  However, I do believe there have been talks between some AAC and MWC schools and they are being lead by Houston.

Remember this past spring when some radio guy in Orlando tweeted something about Houston talking about the Big12 and everyone lol'd?  I ended up listening to that guys podcast.  His stance was that he had been in Tulsa for the C-USA BB tourney and rumors were that Houston wasn't happy with where the then Big East was going.  The conference they agreed to join in late 2011 is drastically different than the conference they are in now.  At that time SDSU and Boise were going to be in for FB, they were making a strong push for AF, it didn't look like Louisville had anywhere to go, and the now Big East BB schools were still in it.  All that is no longer true.  That "Houston talking to the Big12" rumor was probably true, but on the radio he framed it as Houston making one last check to be sure they had no chance of ever getting into the Big12 before trying to get out of the AAC.  Now it sounds like Houston might be trying to start a cross-country conference with a few more western teams to get into the same conference as Boise, SDSU, UCF, USF, and Cincy.

For the tl/dnr crowd: Rumor Houston isn't happy with what the AAC has become and had some secret talks with a few AAC and MWC over the weekend.  The talks were about possibly creating a new conference to recreate the original cross-country Big East plan with Boise and SDSU and a few extra western schools to make them happy.

Looks like Pan was right; times are changing for the way we watch TV.

The cable box edges closer to its end

A new streaming deal between Sony and Viacom intensifies the upheaval in the pay-TV world.

By Jonathan Berr 8 hours ago

Watching television (© image100/Corbis)Will the cable set-top box go the way of the horse and buggy? Perhaps one day.

The alliance between Sony (SNE +0.60%) and Viacom (VIA +0.24%) that has been reported by The New York Times and others shows that day may be coming sooner than many expect. Viacom has "tentatively agreed" to allow its cable channels such as Nickelodeon and Comedy Central to be part of an Internet-based TV service that Sony is developing. This is big news for several reasons.

First, any deal between Sony and Viacom could lay the groundwork for similar pacts with other content creators such as Time Warner (TWX -0.57%) and 21st Century Fox (FOXA +0.41%). Moreover, it may lead producers to sign deals with Google (GOOG -0.32%) and Intel (INTC -0.52%), which are developing offerings similar to Sony's.

"Analysts say cable delivered through the Internet could give households many more choices -- if the new services give customers more for their money and if cable incumbents don't smother the services," according to The Times.

The bad side to these types of arrangements is that they'll make it harder for consumers to avoid "the bundle." If these nascent services want access to popular channels, they're going to have to take less popular ones as well. Cable and satellite providers have done this for years, which forces consumers to shell out big bucks for shows they never watch.

Cablevision (CVC -1.07%) filed suit against Viacom over its channel-bundling practices earlier this year calling them "anti-consumer and wrong." New York-based Viacom, not surprisingly, rejects those arguments.

Here's one of the few issues where content creators and the pay-TV industry agree: If consumers are allowed to buy only the channels they actually watch, it would create a fiscal Armageddon for both of their industries. But as the number of cord-cutters rise, they may be forced to change their tune regarding what's known as a-la-carte pricing.

Consumers have to wonder how much choice they will have from services such as Sony's, which will be similar to the cable and satellite services they already use. And for people who think that quitting cable TV will deal a mortal blow to companies such as Comcast (CMCSA -1.08%),  remember: You'll have to stream your videos over something. More likely than not, it will be an Internet connection from Comcast or one of its rivals.

Hot time in Kat town tonight.

Man, I bet the ACC is super pissed at the AAC for choosing a name that looks super similar to their own.

Everytime I skim through an article I have to double check if its the acc or aac they are talking about.

Both conferences are crap now them combining will not change that imo.

True, but if you take the top 9 or 10 out of the two of them, it's less crap.

I'd bet they'd get a little more money, and they'd end up splitting it less ways, so the net gain would be higher.  Not a ton, but hopefully enough to really set them apart from the other smaller conferences.

Could be offset by travel costs, though.  It may not be worth it.

http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/breakout/sports-last-barrier-cutting-cord-174048139.html

Quote
The economics of all recorded programming is falling apart. Time shifting, iTunes and streaming have killed the value of content except for sports. Nielsen estimates that 20% of time spent watching cable is dedicated to sports programming. Most people watch sports in real time. As a result, Hindery says the only category of service that has outpaced inflation is sports. Everything else is in decline.

Quote
If and when the FCC allows a la cart pricing, the bill will be broken out and customers will be able to see exactly how much they're really paying to support their teams. Unless or until that happens both your cable bill and your urge to cut the cord will only grow.

I don't believe that they'll ultimately force a la carte in the sense that you'll have to pay for every channel, but I think you'll have to pay for the Fox Channels, the ESPN channels, etc.

If/when this happens, it's going to hurt because even if you get every sports fan to pay, you're still going to lose a ton of subscribers.  I'll probably end up paying for, and getting access to, LHN, SECN, BTN, etc. because it will be a part of the bundle.  But it's going to massively cut into the profitability of these conference networks because they won't be extracting dollars from people who don't care about their product any longer.

So, the big loser would be fledgling conference networks with big start up costs that they can no longer cover?

Seems like PAC Network would be the biggest loser(if they are still even doing it, no idea).

The BIG network is pretty well entrenched and I'm guessing enough of the crazy diehards in SECSECSEC country will pony up for the SECSECSEC Network but I cant see many people on the west coast paying extra for the PAC Network.

Pac-12 Network would tank.  There isn't enough interest even in their own territory to make it work, and they don't have the support of a parent company to secure a bundle deal.

Big Ten Network would probably get bundled in with anyone that buys the Fox family since they have something like a 49% interest.

SEC network would probably do the best out of all of them since they'll be attached at the hip to ESPN.  So would the ACC network if that ever gets off of the ground.  But it would be tricky because of the Raycom connection.  ESPN would probably have to buy out Raycom just to get ACC network content, and at that point, they might not even make enough money back.

So, bottom line, if this happened, conference revenues would probably be something like:

Big 12
SEC
Big Ten
Pac-12
ACC

We'd simply be on top because their projected revenues would go down, and they'd have to split that money four more ways than we would.  We're sheltered from all of that.
