If the Big 10 actually adds those schools, they should make the divisions as follows:

The Decent Division:
Ohio State
Michigan
Michigan State
Wisconsin
Nebraska
Iowa
Penn State
Georgia Tech

The Dead Weight:
North Carolina
Virginia
Maryland
Northwestern
Indiana
Illinois
Purdue
Minnesota

Each division plays its 7 game round robin, plus two crossover games, which do not count toward conference standings. The winner of the Decent Division round robin is conference champ. The two teams with the lowest records in the Decent Division get relegated to the Dead Weight Division, and the two teams with the best records in the Dead Weight get promoted to the Decent. That is pretty much the only way that any good Big 10 team could ever put together a schedule that would be BCS quality.

Half a bil for the playoff. 150 million more than originally anticipated. That works out to 4 mil to each of the division one schools if distributed equally (which we know it won't be equal, bcs schools will get higher pct).

Anyway I think that pushes us over 30 million per year. Anyone in the know have a breakdown/estimate? It's really fun being rich and competing for national titles

Here is the only thing I don't get about this "close to $500MM for the playoff". It makes it sound like ESPN wants to pay close to $500MM for all the 3 games. However, we already know that 1/2 of the 24 semifinal games will be played in the Orange, Rose, and Sugar bowls. ESPN already owns the TV rights to those 3 bowls. How does that work? If in a year the semifinals are the Sugar ($80MM) and Orange ($50MM), then ESPN pays an additional $370MM for the NC game? Every 3 years when the Sugar is a semi, does the Big12 and Sugar just not get their $80MM? Is the $500MM for all 7 games, ESPN's $210MM worth of deals for 3 bowl games already roll into that $500MM, and they'll just have to decide how to pay the conferences whose bowl games are taken for a semifinal?

I think what it boils down to is the fact that the ACC got control of the Orange Bowl, had an empty chair, and the three established power-brokers (Swarbick, Slive, and Delany) smelled blood in the water and pounced on that thing.

And let's be honest, here. The SEC is getting into that game at least 60-70% of the time if the criteria is 'highest ranked team'.

TV has apparently shot down the idea of the Big 12/Pac 12 vs. Mid-Major Bowl game. But the Fiesta Bowl sits wide open.

I guess I wouldn't be surprised if, to promote additional equity and keep everyone happy, the Fiesta Bowl did something like the highest ranked team between ND/Big 12/Pac 12 as an inverse to the Orange Bowl and just let the other spot be the final at-large bid that some mid-major or other team ultimately squeak into. That way, TV is still tantalized by a possible ND matchup, the Big 12 and Pac 12 get the same deal as the SEC and Big Ten, and the open at-large spot can be dangled like a carrot to keep the mid-major guys happy.

Anyway, that's what I'd do.

So, it would look like this...

Two elite bowls:

Rose - Pac 12 #1 vs. Big Ten #1
Sugar - Big 12 #1 vs. SEC #1

Two hybrid bowls:

Orange - ACC #1 vs. ND/SEC/Big Ten
Fiesta - ND/Big 12/Pac 12 vs. At-large

Two bowls added for playoff:
Cotton
Chick-fil-a (Peach)

Then you just rotate tie ins from the other bowls to the Cotton and Chick-fil-a whenever.
