Tom, do you have corn that is dented already or was that picture taken a little while after it was plucked?

I suspect that was in the truck for a while before the picture.

I accidentally blasted a bullsnake because it was pretending to be a rattler.

I was mowing at the cat ranch and saw a big ole snake, I turned off the mower and the snake made a rattling sound and went into the S formation so I blasted it since it was right by the house.

After I blasted it I realized it didn't have a rattle and felt bad because it was a beautiful bullsnake.

1- how did a non-rattlenake make a rattling sound?
2- what did you blast it with?

seems sketchy to me too. I bet ben ji planted a rattle next to it after blasting.

1. I had to Google it after I shot it and found it had no rattle, I was completely convinced it was a rattlesnake.

2. Shotgun

I 100% would not have blasted it had I known it was a bullsnake but when I walk by something 50 yards away from the house that makes a rattling sound I'm not going to get too close to try and see exactly what kind of tail it has.

Good thing you didn't get close enough to get bitten.  They are not poisonous, but they have sharp teeth and can bite hard enough to draw blood.  You'll know if it bit you because it will hurt.  Also, if bitten, be sure to clean the wound, as it may have bacteria and/or infectious diseases.

I know from getting bitten around a half dozen times growing up on a ranch in western Kansas.
Hot time in Kat town tonight.

Anyone ever get a square bale with a snake in it?  Honestly, my only snake encounter in all the years of farm life and scout camp.

It was dead, but sticking out of the bale coming out the back of the baler.

Pretty common occurrence when I was cutting hay with my grandpa back in the 80s.

went to this thing and got to make plenty of “actually this is my first rodeo” jokes and also it felt pretty badass buying twelve beers and hauling the flat back just to hear a bunch of early maga era justin bieber and taylor swift and assorted zoophilia jokes.  very pure and wholesome slice of america

https://www.dtnpf.com/agriculture/web/ag/crops/article/2025/08/08/results-2025-dtn-digital-yield-tour?fbclid=IwQ0xDSwMMnZRjbGNrAwydjmV4dG4DYWVtAjExAAEenAgnWM8kyysTDc8GDDHI7nYLbbJ7AFzjiKma5z0pABz6XwnccPugkM0pyw4_aem_fmpX1iOnbRzzsSsjl2jtig

The U.S. corn crop could break through trendline yield estimates for the first time since 2018, setting a new national record in the process, according to the results of the 2025 DTN Digital Yield Tour.

All 11 states included in the tour are forecast to exceed their five-year corn yield averages. While only one state is forecast to set a record, four others are forecast to produce their second-largest yield averages, lifting the prospects of a trendline-or-better national average.

USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) estimates trendline corn yield at 181.5 bushels per acre (bpa). The last time corn yields surpassed the trendline estimate was in 2018, when final yields came in at 176.4 bpa compared to the 174 bpa trend, DTN Lead Analyst Rhett Montgomery said.

"Interestingly, conditions to end July that year were very similar to what we are seeing this year," he said, referencing USDA's crop condition ratings. "Let's just say we outproduce the trend by a similar percentage as in 2018, that would point to a 183.5 bushel per acre yield, conservative compared to some private analysts."

Soybean yield estimates, although strong, are running close to historical averages.

"For the vast majority of the Corn Belt, rainfall has been great -- frequent and moderate to heavy," said DTN Ag Meteorologist John Baranick. DTN's reporting highlighted the pockets of trouble, which are often due to too much moisture this year.

Over the week, DTN published details about corn and soybean crops in 11 states.

Digital Yield Tour estimates are based on DTN's proprietary yield models as of Aug. 1. The models update every two weeks and do not incorporate weather forecasts. Like 2024, the tour will not be releasing national yield estimates. DTN's models forecast at the field level. While statistical inferences could be made to generate national estimates, DTN is still doing its diligence on the accuracy of those methods. You can read more about how DTN's models work here:

You can sell it... under $4 now.  Off almost a dollar in 6 months.  WASDE report last Tuesday also added 2m acres planted to the balance sheet.

Fat cattle at record prices and cheap corn. Hopefully, our animal science grads will share their windfall with the AD.
