We tried to sell a section of Flint Hills pasture with no serious offers over a year.

Seems to be two distinct markets:
People who can afford to buy an 80 or quarter, and people/groups who can procure a SD level spread of thousands of acres.

How many cats would you accept in trade for 10 acres of that flint hills land (must include a pond with huge fish)?
Dude,

Let's just make a date to go fishing and do  tumble weed eradication.

3D printers have transformed the farm toy collection hobby.  #1 was able to get 3D grain trailer made that no off the shelf company was producing.  The Ford day cab came from ebay.  Recreated my cousins actual grain hauling rig in 1/64 scale.

I wonder what that money is for.  We haven't noticed any issues.

My dad's out at the cat ranch just hanging out at the Colby livestock auction living his best retired life. Not buying anything, just hanging out.

Token sunset pic he sent, the grain bins/buildings at 1 o'clock in the background are 3 miles away.

Nothing like a day at the sale barn for a kid with asthma back in the day when indoor smoking was still legal.

$260/cwt for 700 lb calf. I like the scoreboard that does the math, so those cowboys can fill out the check.

Record cattle prices combined with the lowest cattle inventory since 1975.

Coincidentally, one of my BFF, who  is an extension agent in ND, is attending one of the big local bull sales there today.

SD, let me know if your dad wants a genetic upgrade from some big swingin' d!(& hereford whose calves  can handle a northern winter.

You don’t so many Herefords in SW KS. Much more common when I was a kid.

ND bull sale report:  First was $95k, third was $85k. Some 30s. Most $15-20k

Random rabbit hole I found tonight

The Runnymede colony peaked from about October 1889 through the first half of 1890, when estimates of its population ranged from 50 to 100 people. Most farming was done by proxy because the English men were more interested in sports and play than work. Adding to the issue, the new colonists consumed prodigious amounts of liquor, as the prohibition laws were not consistently enforced. Instead of an educational and training facility, Runnymede became a socially oriented community that strongly resembled a modern dude ranch.

I know exactly where that is! Or at least the historical marker

My grand dad raised Herefords. When everyone went angus he stick with Hereford and cross bred with long horn bulls which produced cool looking calves.

He said Herefords were more even tempered than angus

All of the herefords / hereford-crossed cattle I've been around have been really good natured.

I don’t remember the real reasoning for the long horns as a cross other than maybe the calves were smaller/had fewer problems.

For grandpas last 20 years or so of having cattle I don’t think he was worried about money as much as he enjoyed having about 150 or so that were as easy as possible to take care of.

I think that calving ease and wanting to have cows with awesome horns are the only two advantages of the longhorn breed.

He ironed the horns off when castrating etc

Never let them keep their horns

Got my haircut then headed to the farmshow today.

Ag drones are blowing up with multiple booths touting the technology.

I bought my dad an elite DJI drone for the sole purpose of walking center pivot irrigation systems and checking downspouts. Great idea right? It blew off or got destroyed or something in like a week.

the entire farm/ranch experience is so romantic but so cruel. I grew up in it and could deal with it if I had to but people who never did that want to "buy some acres" and run cattle or farm are in for a rough ridin' bad day if they are expecting to earn a living. Even figuring out how you can turn a profit in some of this stuff involves fairy tales that you tell to yourself. I'm speaking specifically to cattle but probably holds true to crops as well. Running cattle is a brutal endeavor. the margin to make money is so thin and the risk is so high it's not something anyone should try to do if they have other options imo. generational players are the only ones that can even weather the tides short of government intervention. my dad is on his way to calling it and my brother is there but I'm not sure he's capable to handle without my parents support (or mine, which is taken up with other bandwitch). not operatoinal, he's a whiz at that. but the financial side.
