Mrs Rancher stops short of calling Mr Ranchers solution a POS saying, "and he's pulling a shredder behind it to hopefully mow the weeds, BUT..."

You know the SD ranch has old balers sitting in the bone yard just rusting away.  Pretty sure we could fabricate  the ultimate TWE 1000 in a weekend.

Haha, I think we have less of a tumble problem these days with how arid it is honestly. But would be up for a project for sure

also, correct me here, but didn't your pops buy some fence to specifically catch the snow for some other stupid reason?
Yes, we put up maybe 100 ft of "snow fence" in the middle of a 100 acre dryland field to "catch some snow in the spots where the yields were bad".....

This was like plastic netting attached to steel posts but he also bought some fancy wood spikes type snow fence but that is currently sitting in a barn.

That looks like a disaster waiting to happen.
Did anyone else grow up reading _Farm Show_ magazine? Farmers would submit pictures and articles about the craziest homemade contraptions. Some of them were legitmately good ideas but some seemed crazy and impractical. "Farmer converts JD95 combine into remote-controlled walnut picker", etc

Farm Journal, Successful Farming all had similar stuff.  I always longed for the incredible shops farmers built.

The Furrow was my favorite... it was the John Deere magazine.

I loved the Furrow. Great photography and pics of awesome new JD equipment. I still flip thru Dad's back issues from time to time.
Working Ranch is a good ag publication if you can get your hands on it. Has great photography and pretty well-written stories.

Recently went down a rabbit hole of looking at land for sale and holy hell at land prices.

This one is by the cat ranch and is somehow connected to my grandma's side of the family, my dad always points it out when we drive by.

https://www.landwatch.com/thomas-county-kansas-farms-and-ranches-for-sale/pid/420667247

Only 2 million to get your start!

Quote
This 789 +- acreage has both tillable farm ground and natural grass pasture.

The land offers additional acreage to your existing farm and ranch or a good size to make your startup.

Anyone have an extra 20 million laying around?

Looks like a good place for you to steward and manage some world class whitetails.

This is what I'd like to get. It's right in my neck of the woods.

https://hallhall.com/property-for-sale/kansas/ee-ranch/a09Nu0000058X0j/?hss_channel=fbp-91270156022

If I can come up with $25 million more, I'll bet set to purchase it.

We tried to sell a section of Flint Hills pasture with no serious offers over a year.

Seems to be two distinct markets:
People who can afford to buy an 80 or quarter, and people/groups who can procure a SD level spread of thousands of acres.

How many cats would you accept in trade for 10 acres of that flint hills land (must include a pond with huge fish)?

when I was in HS (late 90s) my dad purchased a massive amount of ground for a number that at the time boggled my mind. we had leased it previously and I'd overheard my dad talking to my mom or other people about how it was going to come up for sale and his thoughts or whatever. obviously we didn't have that kind of money laying around but the local ranch/farm banker (mentioned before how they are critical to this stuff) was in for it and he got it done. we were leveraged up to our tits from what I took in from peeping into conversations from pops with other people. it was like betting on red from the way I understood it listening in. I'm thinking about it now how it was probably the greatest deal anyone has ever made in my family. obviously SW KS acres are not what acres are worth where it actually rains but it's all relative. counterpoint, you can actually farm in SW KS and not in the flint hills so there's that.

my dad would always tell me, "you can't lose buying land. it's the only thing you can't make more of" and I think there's a lot of truth to that.
