My earliest recollection operating anything was driving the 4020 in maybe third gear while dad cut and fed square bales off a flat bed hay wagon.  Maybe age 8-9?  It was a PowerShift so just pulling it out of gear and let it stop.

However, I remember riding shotgun on the fender of that tractor before I operated it regularly. One hand holding the fender handle and the other holding dad's hammer loop on his overalls or the arm rest on the seat.  Max speed was maybe 20 mph, but sitting on the fender, wind in your face, watching that big tire rolling by, fender vibrating, gravel road passing underneath my dangling feet, pretty sure I thought I was going to die.

Dad's "loader tractor" when I was a kid was a 4020 with a Powershift transmission. Was the first tractor I learned to drive. Most of the time I spent around it was unhitching it from the feed wagon for dad so it could be loaded full of silage, adding milo to the mix, etc. Then trudging thru mud to open gates before all the pens had fenceline bunks. That 4020 was a 100% reliable machine.

I started doing stuff like taking bales off of the field or running a disc when I was 14 or 15, probably.

Have you completed your fall harvest, farming_cat fan? How were the yields? Do you have pictures?
Yes, we are done. Yields are all over the place ranging from fantastic to nearly complete disaster. I didn't put a lot of effort into getting any pictures, but it does look like I have a few. I'll post them later.
Glad that you are finished, at least.

Few pics from harvest 2024.

Thought I found some tall corn.

Actually found some tall corn.

Soybeans almost ready to harvest.

All great, for some reason the one of all the corn (especially if was just the corn no sky or w/e) feels like something you'd see in a book about "harvest"

Another rock wall and building.   The wall ended at an old pond used to water livestock. The building used as a cattle shelter and catch pen for doctoring.... looks like concrete was used on this one.

The find of the day was an old water well.  The farm is actually 4 x 160s that were owned by others back in the day.  I do recall helping fill one of these in on another quarter.

Shocked and surprised this one still existed.   We've had a dozer working in that area so perhaps it ran over this and crushed the cover and exposed it.

One picture you can see my cell flash reflection... another you can see the rock used to line this hole that was 3-4 ft diameter.   Deep AF and still has water in it.

On the to do list now to fill this in.  Put an old piece of concrete over it and marked with a t post.

The well needs to be fed before Halloween Tom.

You have awakened the spirits and they are angry. Throw a chicken down there before thursday otherwise a curse will be brought upon our beloved fighting wildcats football team.

Tip:  Hang the chicken about 10 to 18 feet above the water.  It will be roasted to perfection the morning after Halloween.   :crossfingers:

Speaking of wells......Could the cat rancher become a Wind AND Oil baron?!? A landman just stopped by my parents house in KC offering to lease the cat ranch for $20 an acre for 3 years and 1/8th of any oil produced. From the picture I got sent it looks like it would be this company actually owning the lease https://www.jfredhambrightinc.com/. We would have a lawyer look at the lease but figured I'd ask here.

From looking at this map https://maps.kgs.ku.edu/oilgas/index.html there are no oil wells directly next to the cat ranch but there are a couple 2-3 miles in different directions doing about 2k bbls per year.

Is this standard? Should we hold out for more? How many cat's could the cat ranch support with wind and oil money?!? Unlimited?!?

There was a stone well in the creek by my neighborhood growing up. That’s where the devil worshippers met at night in south Olathe of the 80’s/early 90’s

Negotiations expert here.  You should counter with a demand for 1/9th of the oil and see what he says.

ben ji, I bet someone with these guys would help you thru the process.  They run ads during cat games.

Based on your info, royalties would be $18,000 a year?

2,000 bbl/yr x $72/bbl x 1/8 share

I fat fingered this last night and had like $750,000.  I was like, dam, ben ji and goEMAW would have their own suite next year, LOL.

I'd be curious about contamination liability, clean up, etc.

I think we had a few of these back in the 70s.  Nothing ever came of it, but just took their money for the 3-5 year options.

Hey honey, come outside and let's get a picture on the new tractor!  Just a minute, let me hang my hat on the brake pedal.  Now let's get one with the kids.

Hadn't heard about that one. Heard about one near Holton yesterday. The most recent fire that's been close to us burned "hundreds" of acres south of Sabetha on Oct. 5th. We shut our combine down a little early that day. Glad to be done.

So our latest fascination is corn picking.  This a neighbors set up.  We're going to try and set aside a few acres to experience this next fall.

very eerie gray/orange haze yesterday from high winds and drought.
the weatherman is calling for rain today which would be great.
