Field fires near Highland?  Possible source was electric pole?

Hadn't heard about that one. Heard about one near Holton yesterday. The most recent fire that's been close to us burned "hundreds" of acres south of Sabetha on Oct. 5th. We shut our combine down a little early that day. Glad to be done.
very eerie gray/orange haze yesterday from high winds and drought.
the weatherman is calling for rain today which would be great.

Gonna be a lil more than just rain
hope it is just rain and not apocalyptic hailstones

Yeah me too, was thinking more 'naders than hail, but probably a rough evening in store regardless.

Pretty sure that pic is looking west from the north end of Severance.  Fire reported out last night.  One firefighter injured.

1.68" here yesterday.
No hail or tornados.
Air is much more breathable this morning.

Looks like the game Stallone played with the rebels in like Rambo 8 or something.

So would you wear steel toe ropers to pull that off?

Off week, we headed to the farm.   Rancher cousin was vaccinating weaned calves along with health check on mommas with fall calves.  Never been around to see the freeze brand, so that was educational.

Evergy is going scorched earth on tree clean up under their power lines around the farm.

This is the sister wall of the other one I've been posting pictures of (south property line, other one is north line).

This cleaned up well and exposed the huge rocks in this wall that goes down steep incline. I laid a glove on one the rocks that has fallen.

That cedar mulch looks really nice.
Beautiful stone fencing. That is really cool.

Tree trimming is legit a big deal (less so on distribution lines, more on transmission) since the 2003 blackout. They don't eff around anymore with it.

Those massive trimmers that they use look like they would be a lot of fun.

Residents of Fairway and PV disagree with this assessment. We lose power all the time and never see them trimming trees anymore. KCPL used to come to my house every 2 years and would trim along the line in my back yard. I have no idea when Evergy does it, but it isn't often. They came one day a few years ago to mark the trees that they would trim and they never came back. I pointed them to a broken limb in a neighbors tree that was sitting on the line in my back yard. Still there.

Not sure if this goes here or in amazing animal stories or in killing animals but I saw a picture of a massive mountain lion / cougar / puma that was shot in northern Pottawatomie county earlier this month after killing several cows. It's paws were enormous.

Hence my qualifier of distribution being less so. The transmissions lines (the big ones) they truly do not eff around with.  At my old house (near downtown OP) they only came out once in the 7 years I lived there but it was sufficient, if needed badly for the first+ I lived there. Once they did it was good for the test of the time. We did lose power on my side of the street a lot though relative to other streets, but after the tree trim it was mor due to like pretty decent storms rather than rando things.

My parents have been living the retired cruise life just floating around. They got back a couple of days ago and my dad made a bee line to the cat ranch.

Debated posting this here or the weird text from parents thread but the fact that 1099's were mentioned decided it.

great pics. we did a freeze brand for a bit but abandoned it like the banding steers. still tradional brand/cut for the sd ranch apparently. my dad is a ninja with the cutting though like I've mentioned like 700 pages ago. he can cut a steer and I haven't even got all the vaccinations done. got the pliars knife thing. just rips sacks open and gets in there and flips them to the 55 gallon drum of bull balls.

he like does that thing on the sack and rips it down and then has to grab the apple sized ball and pulls it down violently so the little cord doesn't get left up there and then he uses that same pliar knife thing to cut the cord on both. pretty brutal. cattle don't seem to mind as much as getting branded though.

then iirc you spray the ballsack with some disinfectant or something? I don't know. we've never had issues with infection so maybe bull ballsacks just heal like wolverine. hilariously when we were banding for a year we had tons of infections. also our dog would haul all the crusty ballsacks into our yard which was a PITA.

almost certainly re-hashing things I've posted about years ago but our dog would also haul cattle horns into the yard. you de-horn the cattle with this thing

It's a giant loud saw deal that lops them off super fast because you have to be fast because my dad is fast AF with stuff like I've mentioned. Then blood usually sprays out both sides and the entire side of the cattle working shop is just coated with spray painted cow blood as they run out. when I was in like 3rd grade my cubscout den came out to see irl farm stuff and one of the kids just got blasted with cow blood from horns. traumatized them all. and meade didn't (doesn't) have a lot of "town" kids. which probably tells you all you need to know about who gets into boy scouts. we do this indoors with heat because we run a lot of head. so the walls after the "chute" are just blood spray city USA. we have a hydraulic "chute" that traps their head, stops them from backing up, and squeezes them so they don't move.
