1 bushel of soybeans weighs 60 pounds... the whole bean is crushed mechanically and then separated chemically which yields
44 lbs soymeal
11 lbs soyoil
3 lbs hulls
2 lbs lost in process (moisture)

Meal is fed to pigs and poultry
Oil is converted to refined cooking oil or biodiesel and glycerine.
Hulls are blended off in the meal or other feed mixes

1 bu corns weighs 56 lbs... mostly cracked, rolled, flaked to aid digestion when fed to cattle.

Almost 40 pct of corn crop goes to ethanol now...

1 bu yields 2.7 gallons of ethanol and 18 lbs of dried distillers grain which is used as a feed.

you know what else you feed to animals? molasses. pretty wild huh. you just throw it all together and mix it up and dump it in their bowl.

Just don't get in their way when there's molasses on the line.  A cow will stomp you to death of you stand in the way of her getting to her molasses.

Then she will poop and pee right on your dead head as she's slurping up her delicious molasses.

So, for the soon to be  farmers, this is where your grain gets priced.

Off week allowed me to play farm on Saturday. Helped the cousin get started on beans. Put the 4020 to work applying fertilizer on corn stalks.  Tater assisted with a drain tile clean out.  CRP buffer is prime deer cover.  Two jumped out and startled the dog, which put him on full alert. Hedge apples dropping in the fence rows.

Great additions to this thread Tom, always good to see a Tater appearance.

Took Monday to enjoy fall weather and work on the  farm to do list.

Welded the mount for a grinder stand.  That grinder is older than me, heavy AF, but like our Cats, just keeps grinding.

The old welder is touchy, so when I found a setting, near the top, I dropped a bead around that pipe and flat plate.  Bolted it on, but now I need like a 1,000 pounds to sit on the tire rim to keep that thing from walking clear across the shop floor.

Upgraded the bolt lock on the big barn door to protect my eclectic collection of stuff!

Great farm projects, Tom.
Did you use some 6011 to sling the awesome bead on that grinder stand?

Went out to the cat ranch last weekend to prep some stuff and do scouting for pheasant hunting next month. Birds are looking slightly up but it has been pretty dry all summer.

Cat count was maybe 3 full grown 1099's, five 6-12 month 1099's and maybe another 5 younger than that.

They pretty much stay in the garage and Morton building hiding in the hay but my brother pulled in a couple days ago around 1am and there was a fox attempting to get into the garage.

old mechanical stuff like this is the best that will ever be made. my pops has generations old mechanical drill presses, band saws, welders (not mechanical I guess), etc. that just keep cooking. my dad once told me the key to like the press and saw was that it was slow and heavy. not sure if true but stuff just doesn't quit.

So facebook has been showing me reels of really small kids driving really big farm machines (can figure out how to link a vid) but the most aggressive is from an account called “Farming Fit Momma”. Most of his vids are related to her working out on the farm but this one had an 11 yo and an 8yo operating $2M worth of machinery and doing a rolling unload of a massive combine into a massive grain cart. I’ll admit that growing up on a farm is a large part of why I turned into an adult with an overdeveloped sense of responsibility but something about this seems out of lil to me…

With fancy new equipment it's as easy as pushing a button and everything syncs up between the combine and the grain cart tractor. Then the combine operator can adjust the grain cart from his end if he needs the grain cart to move forward or back.

I agree that tech is really cool and amazing. Do you have 8 year olds operating machinery on your farm? There is a family legend about my 9yo grandpa taking wagonloads of wheat to town in the 30's. Maybe it is the same thing?

We don't have any 8 year olds to run any machinery. 8 years old seems to be a little young to be running machinery alone, but 11 seems plenty old enough. Trying to think back if I was running any equipment at that young of an age and I was probably running some tillage equipment alone by the time I was 11 years old.

I started doing stuff like taking bales off of the field or running a disc when I was 14 or 15, probably.

Have you completed your fall harvest, farming_cat fan? How were the yields? Do you have pictures?

My earliest recollection operating anything was driving the 4020 in maybe third gear while dad cut and fed square bales off a flat bed hay wagon.  Maybe age 8-9?  It was a PowerShift so just pulling it out of gear and let it stop.

However, I remember riding shotgun on the fender of that tractor before I operated it regularly. One hand holding the fender handle and the other holding dad's hammer loop on his overalls or the arm rest on the seat.  Max speed was maybe 20 mph, but sitting on the fender, wind in your face, watching that big tire rolling by, fender vibrating, gravel road passing underneath my dangling feet, pretty sure I thought I was going to die.

I really mumped up a grain cart when I was like 10 - it was really old and was fixed in the unloading position when in the field and I hit one of the big telephone poles that go through the middle of fields instead of following the road. Just smashed the crap out of the auger and I turned around just to see the smash. I'm glad the auger bent and the power line didn't come down!

I also took out a mailbox with a combine header in road gear, but I was technically an adult then. Like everyone I knew had dumb farm fuckups as kids.

Yes, we are done. Yields are all over the place ranging from fantastic to nearly complete disaster. I didn't put a lot of effort into getting any pictures, but it does look like I have a few. I'll post them later.
