Walked the old barn yard of our neighbors place yesterday with a guy who is cleaning up years of overgrowth for the owners now.

This rock wall was the east side of the original barn on this place.  Barn burned down when I was in grade school.  Coming home on the bus, we saw the smoke and flames passing by.  The old power line whipping in the wind sparked the hay.

Cleaned up trees and weeds around it, hoping to preserve it.

I would guess early 1900s?  I went to the wife's funeral, and they told the story about getting electricity to this barn before they got it in the house.  REA started running electricity in the late 1930s.

Our ranch was founded in the 1880s I think by a guy named R E Steele who was a regionally famous SW KS cattle guy. My great grandfather was a local business partner of his family in some way.

Quote
STEELE, R. E.
R. E. Steele was born in 1850, and reared in Prince William County, Va. In 1874 he came west, locating in Douglas County, Kansas. In 1878 he removed to Barber County, and came to Meade County in 1892.   He was married in Meade County to Miss Jennie W. Mills. Two children were born, both girls, and both of whom are married, one to Mr. Eustace Smith, a prominent young lawyer of Hutchinson, and one to Mr. E. W. McNaghten, also of Hutchinson.   Mrs. Steele died in 1907, and afterwards Mr. Steele was united in marriage with Miss Curtis Harsha, of Pittsburgh, Pa.   Mr. Steele has been engaged in the cattle business practically all of his life, and has probably handled more cattle than anjr other Meade County citizen. The names, Steele & Cockins, Cockins & Steele, The Meade Land & Cattle Co., the Crooked L Ranch, are familiar to everyone. While Mr. Steele has been interested in many ranch propositions, the Crooked L, located about three miles south of Meade, is his best known venture. This ranch, while not extensive in acreage, is one of the best little ranches in the State. Here is to be found several hundred acres of alfalfa under a good system of irrigation, and here is produced the feed that fattens several thousand of the Crooked L brand yearly. this highway marker is (was?) on the highway and it happened on our ranch. chief medicine water has tons of stuff in the local meade history museum. he was bigger than sitting bull to us when we were growing up just because of the geography. iirc the cavalry from dodge city came in and wiped them out after this happened.

I remember reading that sign and visiting the Dalton Gang Museum in Meade several years ago.  SD, can you tell if that is louse hay or baled hay?  1,000 acres of alfalfa is a crap load of hay.  The boys must have worked their asses off.  It makes one grateful for modern equipment.  Do you know when your grandad or dad acquired the ranch?

yeah, it was fairly recently. not like "the last few years" recently but recently in the history of the place. I don't know for sure when.

Fun times yesterday.. was sitting out in the backyard by the pool watching the Chiefs game. Chickens get spooked I look up and there is a freaking bull in the backyard with me. Someone had left one of our small gates open. I don't even know how he got his big ass(smaller for a bull) through the gate. After what felt like 30 minutes but was more realistically like 5 we got him back out of the same gate. Still unknown as to who's bull it is as the pasture behind us it was not that guys or another adjacent to me. Yes, I about crapped my pants.

@ben ji need a dove report.  We scratched out around 20 the last few days in Saline County.
Got around 30 out at the cat ranch over 2 days... basically walking around the windbreak in the morning and blasting the birds that come out and ones sitting on the top of dead trees.

After about noon it gets pretty hot and the birds are less active.

After I cleaned the birds I threw all 30 carcasses in the barn for the cats. Apparently after I left my dad picked them all up, put them in the garage freezer and now feeds them 1-2 dead doves a day as a special treat when he's out there.

Just like a special ice cream cone but it's just a frozen dove carcass.
