Maybe. I think in-state tuition is pretty affordable, especially if you can go to a juco for 2 years and transfer all of your credit. At least it is in Kansas, anyway.

College is pretty rough ridin' expensive and there's a lot of ppl out there that don't ever get a return on their investment. Ppl who go to work for employers out of high school, that help pay for their education are geneiouses. I mean, you're not classified to financial aid as a independent unless you're 24, married, or have a baby. That's pretty mumped up. These are the ppl who most of the time qualify for grants. We have it so backwards. We preach to our kids to wear protection, to not have sex till marriage, etc. and then we screw them when it comes to funding. But other than that, this issue doesn't bother me.

How exactly do we screw them, geneious?

My hot take on this issue is that we invented an issue so that we could then provide a solution for it. Before you talk to me about free junior college, show me why this is an issue that needs to be addressed.

The funny thing about all of this is that free juco is super available now.  I went to a high school where only like 8% of us went to a 4 yr college, and even less graduated.  However, over 40 of the 136 ppl I grad'ed with were offered full rides to KCKCC.  Full rides to over 29% of the class.  I mean, if you can make it out of high school, you should be able to get at least a partial scholly, if not full, to some juco somewhere.

Yeah. I'm not sure if other states do this as well as Kansas does, though. I think a juco in every city bigger than Parsons is sort of unique to our fair state.

Yes, in hindsight, I should have gotten a part-time job as a bank teller while in college. Most banks offer tuition reimbursement, and it's not a terrribly demanding job.

Our goal is to sock away about 100k for each of our kids by the time they get to 18. That should pay for some of their education, but probably not all. It will be up to them to take on a part job or loans to cover the rest, and I hope they choose the job route. My parents just didn't have the same view concerning debt, and I think they had a somewhat overinflated view of the worth of a college degree, and we certainly weren't being taught any differently in high school.

I don't know if student loan debt is "the next housing bubble" - but it's something to be concerned about.

If I ever have kids, I think I would pay 50% of their tuition, as well as housing costs for 2 years. My parents did that for me, and I got out debt free working about 10 hours per week.

My parents didn't do any college savings whatsoever.  I graduated debt free doing it the old fashioned way--having the school pay me to attend.  We teach our kids to look both ways before crossing the street and not to share needles, and yet we have allowed them to become so entitled.  Ridiculous!

I honestly think I spent more on beer in college than tuition.

$250k is pretty low relatively, they won't raise taxes in that bracket.

I think he meant the actually rich would be taxed more.

First, that doesn't make it right. Second, the higher you raise the threshhold, the less revenue it will even theoretically generate.

The more popular it will be though.

People who make a million/yr are much quieter than those at 25% of that.

That's the thing, tho. I graduated HS w/ a 3.8 and on the National Honor Scoiety, but because I scored low on some dumbass test, I didn't qualify for scholarships (other than baseball schollys at small schools where the tuition was redic).

You could have probably played baseball at a juco for 2 years free of charge and finished college with less than half of the debt, though.

Not everyone should pursue higher education, though. Can anyone prove to me that the cost of community college is a significant barrier to would-be students?  Because that is the implied problem.  I think we skipped the step where we determine if a problem exists before we attempt to implement a solution.

this is kind of where my head is at. We need to spend money to completely revamp elementary schools first.

I think just about everyone should either go to college or a trade school. The job market for people with just a high school diploma is pretty miserable. People should just be smarter about where they go to school and how they pay for it.

That brings up the debate that "education shouldn't just be for the wealthy".

In my lifetime, higher education has been accessible to anyway who truly wants it.

BTW, there is already a way for motivated, hard-working individuals to get a free college education.  It's called the United States Military.

True, but I was young and dumb and I was having horrible arm problems. It was only a matter of time before I had a major problem with my arm. They were feeding me cortisone shots on the reg. Plus, I was really emaw. I was ready to be there.

In total agreement with you. Just saying that's the counter argument.
