You guys are OK with single folks subsidizing rich parents, but not poor ones? I mean, what's the point of this credit? To ease the financial burden of raising a child?

Have we addressed the poor ones?

Hold on a second. Are you telling me that some politician is playing politics with tax deductions? Maybe we should get rid of all tax deductions and go to a flat or fair tax model.

At least there's one thing we should all be able to agree on: the rich need to pay their "fair share," which means more, and by "rich" I mean any households earning over $250k, even if that includes two spouses both working their asses off to pay off the loans for the graduate degrees that got them to those incomes while supporting 4 kids. We need to take that money so we can give everyone else more "free stuff" until we all have a chicken in our pots. That, my friends, is a proven pathway to prosperity.

This is the one instance where I feel sorry for all those congressmen. They have to sit there and politely listen to this jackass demagogue about playing Robin Hood for an hour tonight.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.

What if we just raise taxes on people making over a million a year and bring back the death tax except bigger than before?

I don't want free stuff.  I just want to pay less taxes.  The two proposals I noted will do that.  I pay way more than what those two would equate to.

Sorry, I sometimes have to skim the libtard blather. Are you referring to the proposal to cut taxes for dual income families and triple the child tax credit? I'm all in favor of the first proposal, but I hate tax credits, which redistribute money to people who don't owe any taxes anyway. It's just rank redistribution of wealth. Even worse, the child tax credit is phased out above a certain income limit, which only increases the progressive nature of the credit. I have 4 kids and receive absolutely no child tax credit. Kids are expensive, but evidently my kids aren't as expensive as if I made $100k less.

Everyone wants to pay less taxes. Paying less taxes is a good thing. But a credit goes further than that. It gives money to people who weren't paying taxes to begin with. Credits are terrible tax policy.

I get that.  How much of a concern is that when you are targeting the middle class?

Seems like you would probably have a whole lot of deductions under that scenario. If you still earn more than $250k after all of those deductions, then yeah, you probably can afford to pay taxes at a higher rate than a family with a joint income of $60k.

I don't like tax credits, either. I'm not even a huge fan of itemized deductions, since lines get drawn as to what is eligible and what is not. Deductions for dependents make sense. Raising the standard deduction seems like the fairest, most politically feasible way to cut taxes for the working poor without cutting taxes for everyone else, so I support that.

Mrs. KSUdub doesn't follow politics, but when I told her about Obama's proposal to tax 529s her reaction was "wait, he wants to give free junior college to everyone but tax the people who are actually saving for college?"

It's just another example of libtardism's perverse illogic and disencentive towards living an independnt and accountable life. We'll give you two years of shitty "college" for "free," but if you want to save for your kids to go to a better school, you'll be taxed on that. Why? Because poor people don't use 529s - eff those "rich kids."

I know it's never going to become law, but it's just a sad reminder of the fact that Americans are so ignorant of Obama's true ideology that they elected him - the biggest libtard to ever occupy the presidency - twice.

I don't follow politics much either, but I don't understand why we have things that are untaxed up front... 529, 401k, whatever. What is the point? I really think anything other than a flat % tax, or an increasing tiered % system is stupid.  Exceptions and deductions and all that are nothing but political fodder.

$250k is pretty low relatively, they won't raise taxes in that bracket.

I think he meant the actually rich would be taxed more.

First, that doesn't make it right. Second, the higher you raise the threshhold, the less revenue it will even theoretically generate.

I completely agree. But until we're talking about switching to a flat or fair tax model, removing the tax exemption on 529s is a shitty thing to do, and the irony of proposing this while also proposing to dole out billions for "free" college is pretty disgusting. It's just another middle finger to the people who are actually responsible.

Maybe, who knows what higher ed will be like in another 10-15 years? The current tuition bubble is unsustainable. Unless there is a significant correction, more and more kids are going to start getting at least half their college credits knocked out in high school / junior college.

I feel like Kansas is way ahead of most other states with affordable college through juco and that this would be better addressed if those other states would just use the Kansas model.

What would anyone invest in a 529 without the tax incentive?

Why should people who go to juco get it for free, while every other kid has to pay their first two years?

This is incredibly stupid
