I honestly don't know how I would react now if the Cats had 70 points with 10 minutes left in the game.

Will Hoi be able to surpass his record of 4 road wins in a season? ISU has road games at OSU, UT, us, and TCU left. I doubt he gets 5.

Yeah, but they were even faster last year.

my perception of kruger being a slow coach is probably about a decade out of date.

or a scandal will force him out

I've been banking on this ever since the rumors came out that Self went to wild sex parties with high paying donors. Something tells me without a leak from the inside, any scandal will be kept tight under wraps.

Really amazing that KU has four 6'6+ guys that can rain threes. Saving them this year.

Self, though, stood firm afterwards.

"I guess 41 percent of our attempts (were) 3s, which is too many," Self said.

The coach later added this about his team's 3s: "It’s fools’ gold. You can’t bank on making 55 percent or 50 percent of your 3s. You want to, but if that's what you play to, then you're not going to be able to hang your hat on that if you play a team that takes away the 3s and forces you to score inside and things like that, and you can’t do it. You’ll end up going home sad."

I think he trying to say, jacking up threes isn't the way you play the game. But he comes off as an idiot. There tends to be a statical advantage for shooting a ton of good threes. The glaring reason why Wooly was god awful.

I mean, Self learned this from the best.

Quote
Despite the Wildcats' torrid outside shooting, Wooldridge said he does not want the perimeter shot to be his team's crutch.

"I think the three-point shot is fool's gold in a lot of ways. I've always believed that," Wooldridge said. "One night you shoot it well, the next night you don't. You've got to get to the free throw line and more in the lane. If you can do that, you can play pretty consistent for a long period during the season."

Self is definitely not an idiot (slimball, yes).  Your "statistical advantage" of shooting a ton of good threes ignores the game-to-game variance.  Over twenty games, you might win more by shooting more threes.  But, you also open yourself up to the greater possibility that you lose a game to an inferior team because you have an off shooting night.  Pounding it inside is much more reliable game-by-game, even if (over the long run) it might result in few wins here and there.  Self is trying to win 6 straight games at the end of the year, most of them against inferior competition.  I would say that he is actually pretty smart to recognize that pounding it inside gives him a better statistical chance of not losing one of those games than does bombing threes.  He might have a better chance of going 5-1 or 4-2 by bombing threes, but he has a better chance to go 6-0 by pounding it inside.

I think your post is what Martin was referring to when he said "statistics are for losers."

This simply isn't true. Good programs like Michigan, Florida, Wisconsin, and even Duke have had 3PA% in the upper 30s or 40s and regularly been top 4 seeds in the tournament and have success. There are multiple ways to win and shooting good 3s is definitely one of them.

I'm just thinking out loud here but if I was coaching a hoops team, and we had guys who were v good at 3 point shots, I'd have them shoot more 3 point shots. Now, conversely, if we had a team that wasn't as good at 3s I would coach them to shoot 2s more.

So really I think Self is referring more to his specific team than an overall coaching philosophy like Jim was.
