Good idea. (except that we are bad) :(

:Woohoo:
Oklahoma's top 5 are very good.

:Woohoo:
Oklahoma's top 5 are very good.
They made UT look silly tonight. Wow.
-
Am I the only one who misses the Big 12 Network and the P66 pre/ post-game show?
-
Is WVU legit?
I'm pretty comfy saying that baylor, ttech, cats, ku, Okie state, isu and tcu are not. UT is trending towards not legit.
-
Am I the only one who misses the Big 12 Network and the P66 pre/ post-game show?
no. i also miss missouri. a lot. i miss cu and nu a little. it's really hard to give a crap about playing tcu or whatever random school we have to play these days.
-
I really miss studio 66 and 12:45 start times
-
I really miss studio 66 and 12:45 start times
Yeah, this.
-
Studio 66 is what I miss the most. Also not having to pay extra for ESPNu to watch Cats games.
-
Trey Zeigler. Oh my.
:alleyoop: <--- better than this dunk.
-
Poor TCU, also LOL at that ref going down like American Sniper got him
-
I don't understand texas. Pretty frustrating team to watch since kentucky.
-
I don't understand texas. Pretty frustrating team to watch since kentucky.
what's to not understand, they're not that good and are/were overrated. basically the same thing applies to the entire big 12.

I just wanted to believe in them. The big 12 is absurdly boring.

The big 12 is absurdly boring.
it really is. on any given saturday, there's maybe one game i'm half-excited to watch. this also references my earlier post about missing mu, nu and cu.

I don't know if any of those teams would excite me. It's really that it appears we don't have one elite team and the "best" team might be the worst ku team in a while or OU. My only joy is watching ISU.

Lets not go overboard, the best team in the country needed 2 OTs to beat Texas A&M and they are garbage. This is how life on the road is in college basketball.
-
I haven't cared about watching a cu or nu game since Danny Nee, Ricardo Patton and Raycom
-
I liked watching NU with Doc, just from a "is charlie brown going to kick the ball this time" perspective.
-
I haven't cared about watching a cu or nu game since Danny Nee, Ricardo Patton and Raycom
if you didn't like the bald squatty coach, you're unamerican.
-
texas must really suck
-
Doc? Yes. His teams were way too wnba-y however (Except that one gross euro)
-
pretty exciting kstate-ou game today, to be fair. maybe i'll watch the isu game too.

Nebraska and A&M were so rough ridin' awful to watch, like Tech and K-State now.

west virginia's court.... what in the eff
-
this is hurting my eyes. why would a yellow team yellow up their wood stain :barf:
-
west virginia's court.... what in the eff
what's the problem, it's looked like that for years
-
Boise State of the CBBall world... wait until they unleash the throw in to the the prone 'eer you didn't even know was there...
-
it's very possible that i've never watched a wvu home game, mir
-
maybe it's just the overhead camera. when they switch to floor camera, it doesn't look as yellow
-
has it been discussed yet, Buddy Hields' slapping of the basketball court? It is disgusting

Any moment in college athletics that could conceivably call for displays of enthusiasm are warranted. Its why college sports are great.
-
That was a huge win for Iowa State, unfortunately I have money on them finishing 4th or worse in the conference
-
Ugh. :frown:

Ugh. :frown:
Sorry cDub, but you guys will be fine. This is a good league.

Ugh. :frown:
Looks like you get to duke it out with the pokes and baptists for 6th place.
-
Ugh. :frown:
Sorry cDub, but you guys will be fine. This is a good league.
WVU shot 33% from the field, though. That is not fine. That's also why they're #1 in the nation in shots taken compared to opponents.

it will be fine cDubs, remember that mustache competition/festival thing :D

No, but they'll be fine. Top 25 in both offensive and defensive efficiency. 30% of opponent's possessions end in TOs. (ridiculous) Plus like most Huggins teams you oboard great. WVU is really good and they'll finish in the top 3 or 4 of this league and likely be a Top 5 seed.

Oklahoma State is not poop? When I watched them lose to Dax's South Carolina squad I assumed they were going to be pretty bad this year,
But the close loss at Ames and the ass kicking of Texas have me wondering.

I thought they were crap, but the only games I'd seen were that usc game and their roadie at mizzou. They've looked good in confy
-
The "game within the game," so to speak, for me every year around this time is to try and speculate who will dethrone KU and win the Big 12. I really enjoy it.
-

Yeah, its not happening though. Self doesn't lose games he shouldn't (like the Baylor game) in Big 12 play. He's a complete stud. #11str8orwhatever.

If not dethroned, then I would really enjoy like a 4 way tie.

I would have said oklahoma before last night, now I think it's just a bunch of pretenders clawing for second place.
-

You guys are crazy. The only real conference game KU played was at likely 7-9th place Baylor. What in the world has everyone seen that makes them think KU is all of a sudden some prohibitive favorite? You guys don't think the same team that lost at Temple by 5307820 points will be due for a clunker or two? Never in the history of college basketball have wins over Baylor and Texas Tech carried so much weight. As mucha as it sucks, Iowa State has the best wins in conference so far.
-
What in the world has everyone seen that makes them think KU is all of a sudden some prohibitive favorite?
the last decade. there is something to be said for "until proven otherwise." ku basically gets 9 automatic wins at home and has eliminated one of their potential road losses already.
-
MIR nailed it. KU is going to struggle against anyone with size and against anyone who defends.
The whole, "until someone beats ku, they're my pick" is about as tired a talking point as "LHC Bill Snyder's teams play error free football" or whatever. If you were a casual fan listening you'd have no idea like 7 other teams won conference titles over the same 10year time span #1truechampion.
-
oh please. ku has lost non conference games before, and looked bad in plenty as well. the kentucky game doesn't even really count, in my opinion.
"until someone beats ku, they're my pick" is just another way of saying they have the best coach and best home court advantage. that's not debatable. and to act like any team in the big 12 has some serious talent advantage over them is just stupid.
-

I hate that talking point so much. Also the only two worst home courts in the Big 12 behind Baylor are Tech and TCU.
-

They do have the best coach and the best home court, no doubt. I'm interested at to why the Kentucky game doesn't count though.
-
KU can't even shoot and they don't have a center this season. They're going to lose plenty of games in conference for someone else to step up and win it.
-

maybe i should rethink this because of kentucky's last two performances, but to me they are on a different level than anyone in college basketball, particularly the big 12. so even though ku struggled against them, there's no team in the big 12 that can do anything close to what kentucky did.

Texas can exploit the same things that UK did. Just because Texas crap the bed against OU doesn't mean that they can't sweep KU. I don't think UT sweeping KU would be some kind of shock.
-
yeah, maybe
-
Their game against Frank was awful for them, but their numbers don't lie and they are pretty good. They have a solid team and should make the tornament.
they haven't beaten a single good team, unless you count texas. texas has also not won a game against a good team.
-
Always thought Texas and Baylor hit a wall about the time conference play starts.
This is one of Self worst defensive teams he has had at Kansas. Lacks elite size and experience he has had in the past. Also he is usually loaded with post depth.
-

True. Are they just kenpom mirages?
-
Are they just kenpom mirages?
i think so, but it's odd. i can't recall ever having such cognitive dissonance between the objective measures and my own eye test. to me the entire big 12 looks very average (or worse). objectively, it is by far the strongest conference.
i think i mentioned it in chat, but not here. kstate has a great opportunity to get credited for beating a lot of really overrated teams. but kstate probably isn't good enough to take advantage of the opportunity.
-

they are the prohibitive favorite because the rest of the field will probably lose some clunkers too (see OU)however KU will (and usually does) lose less of them. no one in this league is very good at all. however I do enjoy watching ISU.

Ku struggled against Baylor and Georgetown, they got humiliated and then raped against Kentucky

Can't watch the WVU/OU game, gotta keep refreshing theScore. Frustrating as hell. :ohno:
-
the boo birds are really out in lawrentucky tonight. KthUg with 2 technicals midway through the 1st half. i'm sure a few (more) Ok St players are going to be assaulted on the way to the team bus.

I'm OK with you two ostensibly taking this position, so long as you both are OK with being FPs.
-
Also, @pissclams, if you can't tell the difference between booing at the OOD/Hilton vs allen fieldhouse, then you are a dumbass. They only do it when it's necessary. The refs are always against them and sometimes they need to unleash their anger with the politics that are involved with being KU. K-State and Iowa State fans do it alllllll the time, no matter what. No class at all.
-
Do I have to :tsc: ?

This ladies basketball game/ft shooting competition is awful television.

Congrats cdub. :bball:
Thanks, friend!

Oklahoma State has played the entire second half without Forte and has missed a million wide open shots and is still in this game. KU looks pretty meh on offense and defense.
-
Game is over when you are running guys like 44 out there.
-
WVU's bench scored 55 pts, and Staten didn't score until the final two minutes. OU commits season high 22 TO's. WVU-86, Land Thieves-65. :Woohoo:

I've enjoyed watching baylor this year. do most years, tho
-
If Baylor score 74 , you aren't trying on defense
One off the top 25 offenses in the country. :dunno:
I bet their conference offensive numbers will be comfortably in the bottom half. They don't have a shot-maker and their bigs are not skilled at all. 1R is their best offensive player and by far their most skilled, that can't happen. This is easily the worst collection of offensive talent this Drew has had since they started winning. They will beat people with that zone but they will be prone to long stretches without scoring. This conference is filled with teams with very questionable offensive talent.
-
Baylor doesn't shoot well, but they are the best oboarding team in the league and they are decent at not turning it over and getting to the FT line. They will still have a solid offensive efficiency because of that, similar to Frank's teams.
-
And yes, the league's offenses are terrible combined with good defense. Right now the average efficiency in the league is .99 and average eFG% is 45.5%, both by far the worst of any major conference.
-
Baylor isn't going to score against anyone trying on defense.
-
Baylor isn't going to score against anyone trying on defense.
They had a solid offensive game against KU. You do realize that game was only 52 possessions, right?
-

I did not analyze the stats from that game (obviously, I barely look at our stats). I watched part of it and saw Baylor shoot about a thousand threes and generally do nothing on offense. KU, imo, is not good defensively(they can be at times). OSU would have beat them by 20 if they could hit the ocean from the beach on some wide open looks and Forte played his usual 39 minutes.
-
True, true true, we easily could have lost had we played worse and they played better.
-

Is the Big 12 bad? How are we able to beat these teams when we couldn't beat "worse" teams in the non-con? It doesn't seem like we are playing that much better. What a strange season so far.

Close losses in non-con, better play in league, luck...
-
Tech just lost their best chance for a conference game by 20. They are way worse than the last two TCU teams or that winless A&M team.
Grats TCU on their first ever Big 12 road win and are now 3-40 all-time in conference play.
-
I'm going to be rock chalking my ass off tonight.

i think it is, but i respect the fact that objective measures do not agree with my perception.

Yeah, its weird. The league had a good OOC run for the most part. Its hard to decide (so far) if the league has great defense or terrible offense with our current .987 points per possession and 45.3% eFG% collectively in league games. I guess we'll find out in March (kind of).

I wonder if there is an effect from playing every team twice. We are looking like the old Big Ten.

I'm not sure, last year the league shot 49.4% eFG% and was a very efficient 1.07 PPP overall.

hoiball is just better than any other big 12 ball. it you're a big 12 area recruit and don't want to go to isu, you should have your head examined.

Would be great to see bill pull this one out last minute on controversial call.

its getting loud in ames

ku out of TO's with 6+ left, wow

Ku has the worst transition d in conf, right? I mean, ISU is making them look silly in transition. Kinda sad.
Also, one thing ku has always been pretty great at is passing and ball movement. They look worse at passing than us tonight.
ISU is going to mump us.

Calling that technical was crap.

Spiked the ball. Pretty easy tech.

Pretty pathetic spike IMO. Marginal at best.

very possible, we know the games that are important
-
Were we looking past every single noncon? Looking at conf from a dozen games out?
This team has been amazingly consistent in our play this year. We played 3 really poor halves of basketball that resulted in 2 wins. The last 2 non-cons we played 3 really poor halves of basketball that resulted in 2 losses.
-
That was no where close to a charge, LOL
-
I think this game has been pretty well called for a ku v ISU game.
-
1st place!
-
LOL at Iowa State students trying to prove something by not storming the court, they did it 3 times in the non-con alone last season.
-
That was a fun game. Super jelly of the style of play.
-
Feels good guys.

It would almost make this less fun if something stupid happened and we got ranked monday.

Am I the only one who misses the Big 12 Network and the P66 pre/ post-game show?
Studio 66 is what I miss the most. Also not having to pay extra for ESPNu to watch Cats games.
I really miss studio 66 and 12:45 start times
All this stuff. I mean, I guess I always took it for granted. I know money and all that stuff. I finally added News and NU and it was easy enough, but man.

Kansas Basketball at Ames is one of the special things about the Big 12.

Agreed. Always entertaining.

Is Bill Self the greatest sports coach of all time?

I still think OU may give them a run here.

Is Bill Self the greatest sports coach of all time?
wooden had national championships, self has conference championships, so i think the answer is no.

I stand corrected. OU just doesn't have it tonight.

It's like watching every K-State game at the phog. Yes, yes, I know, neckbrace in 06 and all...
-
Is Bill Self the greatest sports coach of all time?
imo he is the greatest "regular" guy coach of our generation, most guys that are better are total psychos like K, Saban, Belicek etc.
-
KU probably still wins this game, but this is the weakest KU team we've seen in a while. Still very good, but they just don't have the finishing power of most Self teams.
-
If you think bill isn't a psychopath you are fooling yourself.

Wow KU.

true, but he at least can interact with the world in a personable manner. The "normal" guy that has a better body of work is Calhoun at UConn but he is only normal by masshole standards

Probably, but to let a team come back like this in AFH is pretty rare. If they are up by 20 at half, they usually win by 30.

The 3 pointer is ruining the game
-
My goodness. OU has the lead.
-
Lon take it away after half, or KU go cold?

ou is rollin
-
And its not like its the first time this KU team has given up leads this year. Its just so weird to see.

Well did you see the last time OU beat KU at home this is big for them

I didn't expect buddy hield to go all Marcus smart on the phog. Omg do you guys remember that back flip?!

Holy moly, KU! WTF!?

Don't look now, Bill...

I don't know about this. I expected it. I think it's just a product of playing a good team and there's a let down after getting up 20, and KU wasn't going to shoot like that all night. Our '10 team did the same thing in AFH getting down by a ton and then making it a game before fading.
-
I bet Bob and Greg were must listen radio when OU came back.
Sorry I missed it.
-
Kansas Fans boo bad calls because they have a high basketball I.Q.....not EVERY call that goes against their team.
We also aren't cvnts that boo injured players when they are lying on the floor.
-
They just boo a lot to implore the refs to do better. It's all for the betterment of the game at Allen's Boo House.
They just want the refs to know that they've been . . . ThUNDERSTRUUUCK with b-ball knowledge by ku fans.
-
I love how they keep having to remind themselves that Their fanbase has a "higher bball IQ than other fanbases". I mean, it's rough ridin' rich.

I'm really surprised they haven't stolen that "Through these gates" crap from Nebraska and painted it all over their concourse.

Good luck against the Cyclones tonight. Remember, in basketball there are two twenty minute halves, which means you'll have about 15 minutes in the middle to pound Busch Lights and beat your wives, you ignorant hillbillies.

One more nugget: If you are watching from home, even though you can see and hear them, they can't see or hear you, so booing will not impact the game.
Caveat: You may, of course, still boo if it in some way enriches your experience.

these guys really do get it!

I wouldn't not say I was mad. I'm pretty used to it with this year's team. We have been winning a lot of close games, which can be fun when compared with most years when we are simply blowing teams out. However, I also find myself not caring as much about this team because I don't believe they have the ability to make a deep tourney run.
-
So you're kind of a ku sticker type of fan, ready to peel that thing off at any moment.
Pretty cool that you pretty much admit that. Brave.
Welcome.
-
I plan on booing very loudly at my tv every time the refs screw up and turning and telling my friends that all of those ISU fans are huge dumbasses for booing the right call. It's the only way to watch college basketball, really.

I'll still watch every game and hope that they win. I just don't think we'll be cutting down the nets in April, and as such I won't invest myself emotionally in that outcome. Besides, I'm more of a Longhorn man, these days. #HookEm

Texas just has looked awful since going ahead 44-39. Ku has gotten countless Off Reb and loose balls. They have allowed Ku to get 36 pts in its final 21 poss. Texas forced 0 TOs in the 2nd half.
Pretty pathetic from the Horns and pretty solid play from ku

Anderson just isn't a smart defensive player, that's why. They were up 4 late in OT and he just stood there as Staten drove and kicked it out for an open 3. Then he tried to block the last layup and wasn't even close to the ball....and of course that was after he failed to get back because he was celebrating

Is Jeff Orr back for Tech this year?

Barnes gonna Barnes.

Is Barnes getting too comfy down in Austin? I think he's done a damn good job in Austin on the whole, but he's basically been oscar Weber over the past seven years. I doubt that is what he wanted to be when he grew up.

Man texas made this one interesting
-
They did. ISU usually closes out these games more easily when they have that big of a lead late.
-

If they don't get there this season it would make a full class (4 yrs) of not once sniffing second in the conference. Obv. they aren't terrible, but it's been quite a while since they were a true contender.
-
I predict ISU goes 6-5 in their last 11 games. I also predict KSU will go 6-5.
KU will win the league again. will be a handful of 11-7, 10-8 teams battling it out for 2nd.

And, if we're a 10-8 and 2nd/3rd in conference, we'll be in the tourny.
the committee has said many times they don't look at conference standings.
Generally speaking finishing 2nd or 3rd means you beat at least a couple of good teams along the way but if KU is clearly the only elite team in the big 12 and we get swept by them and are tied for 3rd at 10-8 maybe make for just a high NIT seed.
Also, I think Towniecat posted that there has never been an atlarge bid to a team with 15 losses,10-8 with a loss in KC = 15 :ohno:

We're not going 10-8 and if we do, we're not making the tourney.

First, the conference standings thing has been true, but that's because almost every conference has had unbalanced schedules. Quality wins, road wins, etc. will still be the standard, but finishing 2nd/3rd in the Big 12 will likely mean you've done very well at those things because of the true round robin schedule.
The Big 12 is going to have at least 7-8 quality teams, so if you win 10 games you will probably have 6 quality wins.
As you said, 10 wins puts K-State on the bubble, but probably not in because of the OOC losses. I'd say at least 11 Big 12 wins with 7 of those being "quality" will be minimum.

Yeah, the U or whatever.
Honestly, I had no idea about TCU's arena. I read the post above about being in a high school gym and I thought ben ji was just making fun of how crappy their arena was. Then I saw that the court was orange with a ridiculous basketball in the middle and it was actually in a high school gym that seated less than 5K people.
Sadly, it did remind of of when the Cats were without a baseball field, but its not like we were on TV and stuff.

is the fact that they're playing in a high school gym while getting theirs renovated a big deal?

Their old gym was pretty much a High School gym iirc

I've never seen it from a major conference school, but I may have missed it. I mean they are in Dallas/Ft Worth, I would think there would be a better/bigger arena available. Or you would plan renovations not during the season. :dunno:

i'm not sure a bigger place is necessary. hell, they didn't fill the place last night against a top 10 team
This is true.
I guess I just remember renos at the OOD.
Loge seating added?
Paint over Asbury teal?
Matte black paint over jump shot/bounce pass signage?
Install banners?
Put up gigantic HD screens?
Nope, not one disruption in season play.
Go Cats!
-
I also wondered why TCU wasn't doing this in the other 8 months of the year when there's no basketball going on but it turns out their renovation project has a ridiculously long timeline of about 19 months.

This Iowa State vs KU game is ugly and poopish.
-
Iowa State playing good defense and hitting the offensive boards. Just what we all expected.
-
Well, they were playing good defense.
-
Is Greene an NBA type? My gut says no, but he is pretty good.
-
Greene is like Sam Perkins reincarnate
-
did I mention the time I ran into Sam in Caesar's Palace? he was with Clyde the Glide
-
Yea like I said he probably is a 15k points 7k rebounds kind of NBA guy.
-
I like how every time ku goes over the back they call a foul on woodpecker aggie.
Also, Jamari is trailor trash

It's really something. I'm getting tired of them winning the Big 12 every year though. It's bad for the conference when no one can unseat them.

Agreed. I don't mind them doing well because TSC and all, but if we could have a few people at the top in the public perception it helps the whole conference look deeper.
lol at the announcers last night saying Iowa State is KU's real rival in the BIGXII.

They said in basketball, and I agree with that statement. I was discussing this with some fellow distinguished hawks yesterday, and we all agreed that, in recent years, we look forward to the ISU match-ups the most. Leading up the KSU game on Saturday, I had been planning to be touring a brewery while the game was on, and the prospect of missing it live did not bother me all that much.

hoi is fabulous, but he doesn't recruit well enough yet to challenge kayewe. talk to me when he finishes second for the first time.

It's natural to come together with people you share a common bond with. KU and ISU are the bottom feeding hangalongs of the conference, so this makes sense. Before you had your similarly situated suburban capitol city commuter college, who you happened to share a tireless devotion to racism with (Ku Mu).
It's the same reason attractive people marry one another (KSU and UT).

A Sweet 16 is pretty good. :dunno:
Granted, they have way different styles, but I think Drew and Hoi are pretty similar in the types of programs they are building. Both are going to regularly compete in the upper half of the league and regularly make a push in the tournament. Fans of all but a handful of NCAA programs should be more than happy to have coaches like those guys.

interesting diarrhea, here.

Perhaps, but the problem is to have a real rivalry the other team has to win once in a while. Since ISU had actually won two straight against them with last year's Big 12 tournament and this year in Ames, that was as competitive as any team had been against them.
Consider, since the beginning of their ten year title run (shared or not), these are the league teams and how many times they have beaten KU. (including Big 12 tourney games)
OSU - 5 (14, 13, 10, 08, 05)
KSU - 4 (14, 11, 08, 06)
ISU - 4 (15, 14, 12, 05)
MU - 4 (12, 09, 06, 05)
UT - 4 (14, 11, 08, 06)
BU - 3 (13, 12, 09)
Tech - 3 (09, 07, 05)
OU - 2 (13, 05)
WVU - 1 (14)
TCU - 1 (13)
aTm - 1 (07)

kayewe (thanks for this, Bread!) is like a great golfer at the top of his game. It's not about playing or comparing yourself to others, it's about whether you yourself can achieve your own goals and beat your own "best."
Bill Self's personal live is the "yips" in this model, and as of right now, he seems to be controlling it. Bravo to him.

Yeah, they don't have a rival. Hoi has a long row to hoe. To me you have to be both beating them occasionally and competing with them at the top of the standings. Self is king of the hill in the Big 12, just throwing poor sons of bitches back down it once they make the infrequent climb to the top. #peerless
-
Yeah, Hoi has a long way to go, along with everyone else. Self owns this league.
-
important to note that bill self didn't even go to ku.
any success that he and ku have had are a product of oklahoma state, not the university of kansas.
boil it all down, oklahoma state has won 10 straight, not KthUg.
-
KU hasn't been seriously challenged for conference supremacy since Norm Stewart and Billy Tubbs in the Big 8.
-
Yeah, Hoi has a long way to go, along with everyone else. Self owns this league.
I don't know how much room Hoi's system has for growth. It is almost the same every year. How does he get more talent into the system. No one can compete with Self's talent he has as much talent as the rest of the league combined. Huggs is the only guy I think who could knock him off. He forces other teams to play his way and how will KUs elite talent translate to that.
-
Hoiberg can get more talent in the system by recruiting better talent. He has plenty of room for growth.

True. He has been amazing at transfers though.

KU did look a little shaky against ISU's press at the end of last night's game but they have almost 2 weeks to prepare as only the game in Stillwater on Saturday will require any prep

I think Huggins might get WVU to challenger status before hoiberg does.
-
I think Huggins might get WVU to challenger status before hoiberg does.
Huggins system is designed for talent differential. Your bench better be good, you better be good at playing Huggs ball. Hoiberg's system is great for talent, Holberg is the most underrated recruiter in the country, imo. Finds shooters, ball handlers at every postion. Huggs system travels well, Hoibergs doesn't.
-
I think Huggins might get WVU to challenger status before hoiberg does.
Look at Huggins' trend the last four seasons and then take a gander at his recruiting the past few years. This season is the spike and once Staten is gone Huggs will be back into the middle if not lower. He doesn't have guard talent in the pipeline.
-
your face doesn't have guard talent in the pipeline.
-

Your face is in the pipe line.

Huggins has had plenty of time to build a program at WVU. Hoiberg seems to improve every year and kinda started with McNeck's dogshit players.
-
Huggins regressed. He's on that down swing.

well, that's improvement every year but one, isn't it? He's got time to improve on last year.

Huggins regressed. He's on that down swing.
Then he completely changed everything and it is working.
-
The next step is when he starts landing those high 4-star and occasional 5-star guys. Then he goes to the NBA before they win anything too big. Then they're never that good again in their entire history.
-
Huggins regressed. He's on that down swing.

They're going to be shitty again after this year. Then Huggs is going to retire or implode and get fired. He's burning up before our very eyes. A career extinguished. This is that last great drag before it's some sad litte puffs and then, ope, cashed.
-
Good, maybe we can resurrect him again.
-
Good, maybe we can resurrect him again.
Brad could be the only one on Huggs original staff not looking for a Job and he was the ops guy.
-
I just meant I don't think Iowa state will ever be a serious contender, I probably should have just said that.
-
Anyone else getting some weird feedback on this OU v WVU game with the sound? Please tell me its not just me and my surround sound is blown! :ohno:

My sound is mumped too

Same here, WVU looks flat.

OU handling WVU easier than I anticipated.

Sooners were pretty impressive.

Playing WVU the 2nd time at home should be a breeze.

Baylor up 21-3 @wvu so far...
-
Baylor up 21-3 @wvu so far...
Probably because WVU isn't really all that good. As WVU takes more and more lumps in conference play it's going to become painfully obvious that a decent team would have beat them at home.

Yeah, I was pretty wrong about them. I thought with their effort and defense they would give a lot of teams trouble, but they will mainly only give teams with terrible guards trouble.
-
there's a lot of teams in the big 12 that can lose to a lot of teams, even at home.
i don't want to sound like a broken record, but the league's kenpom just astounds me. i can dismiss the rpi, because the rpi is trash. but the kenpom is just crazy.

I still think he does too. I just meant to make that point during a KU win (I think they were up 12 at the time I made it) and not when they lose.
-
Bob Davis at the end of the game was amazing. About 3 minutes after it was over (he was super cranky about the court storming) he said "You know, it really was a great Big XII Basketball game, one that is what makes the conference great. Too bad they couldn't sell out the arena."
-
Earlier in the year people mocked the idea that one would predict that KU would win the conference again in the basis of "they always do."
I stand by my prediction, and I will predict that KU will win this conference forever, in the current configuration.

Yeah, I was with you. Its tough to see Self ever having a bad year as a coach.

also on the basis that the rest of the league was wildly overrated by the end of the non-con season.

You don't think he's getting bored? I mean, it's not even a challenge for him anymore. At some point, don't you get tired of slapping the little kids around on the playground?
-
As long as the Big 12 is falsely portrayed as some type of basketball powerhouse that he wins with ease each year it would be pretty silly to leave
-
OSU under Sutton, OU under Sampson and early Barnes UT squads were at least on a level with KU. UT held out for a bit, but Self has KU on a level other conference schools can't even compete with right now. It's been that way for awhile.
KSU 09-10 and MU that one year were good teams, and Drew has had some talented squads, but even they were clearly below Kansas. I just don't see this run ending unless someone drastically improves or Self moves on.
It really is a little nine.

Will Hoi be able to surpass his record of 4 road wins in a season? ISU has road games at OSU, UT, us, and TCU left. I doubt he gets 5.

I've been banking on this ever since the rumors came out that Self went to wild sex parties with high paying donors. Something tells me without a leak from the inside, any scandal will be kept tight under wraps.
-
Really amazing that KU has four 6'6+ guys that can rain threes. Saving them this year.
-
Self, though, stood firm afterwards.
"I guess 41 percent of our attempts (were) 3s, which is too many," Self said.
The coach later added this about his team's 3s: "It’s fools’ gold. You can’t bank on making 55 percent or 50 percent of your 3s. You want to, but if that's what you play to, then you're not going to be able to hang your hat on that if you play a team that takes away the 3s and forces you to score inside and things like that, and you can’t do it. You’ll end up going home sad."

I think he trying to say, jacking up threes isn't the way you play the game. But he comes off as an idiot. There tends to be a statical advantage for shooting a ton of good threes. The glaring reason why Wooly was god awful.

I mean, Self learned this from the best.
Despite the Wildcats' torrid outside shooting, Wooldridge said he does not want the perimeter shot to be his team's crutch.
"I think the three-point shot is fool's gold in a lot of ways. I've always believed that," Wooldridge said. "One night you shoot it well, the next night you don't. You've got to get to the free throw line and more in the lane. If you can do that, you can play pretty consistent for a long period during the season."
-
Self, though, stood firm afterwards.

Self is definitely not an idiot (slimball, yes). Your "statistical advantage" of shooting a ton of good threes ignores the game-to-game variance. Over twenty games, you might win more by shooting more threes. But, you also open yourself up to the greater possibility that you lose a game to an inferior team because you have an off shooting night. Pounding it inside is much more reliable game-by-game, even if (over the long run) it might result in few wins here and there. Self is trying to win 6 straight games at the end of the year, most of them against inferior competition. I would say that he is actually pretty smart to recognize that pounding it inside gives him a better statistical chance of not losing one of those games than does bombing threes. He might have a better chance of going 5-1 or 4-2 by bombing threes, but he has a better chance to go 6-0 by pounding it inside.
I think your post is what Martin was referring to when he said "statistics are for losers."
-
This simply isn't true. Good programs like Michigan, Florida, Wisconsin, and even Duke have had 3PA% in the upper 30s or 40s and regularly been top 4 seeds in the tournament and have success. There are multiple ways to win and shooting good 3s is definitely one of them.
-
I'm just thinking out loud here but if I was coaching a hoops team, and we had guys who were v good at 3 point shots, I'd have them shoot more 3 point shots. Now, conversely, if we had a team that wasn't as good at 3s I would coach them to shoot 2s more.
So really I think Self is referring more to his specific team than an overall coaching philosophy like Jim was.

You have no idea what I do or have done. Analytics can be very a useful tool for basketball, so don't be dumb.
FWIW, Self's way of winning is very consistent and he's the best coach in the league. I'm not necessarily saying his stance on 3PT shooting is wrong for him and his program (obviously its not), I was more pointing to steffy's post which says shooting 3s is wrong as a general rule in winning basketball, which is simply not true.
That said, with this particularly team it might do Self some good to accept change. He's got his worst 2PT shooting team ever at 45.6%, over 4% worse than any other team he's coached. He also has one of his best 3PT shooting teams 40.9% and currently 30.1% of their shots are 3s. So while he may not want to have 40% of his team's shots as 3s, it might do him some good to be flexible and go for around 35% or so of his teams shots from 3 since they aren't very good at shooting 2s.
But I'm sure you already knew all that.

Coach Self has already opened things up offensively and this team is shooting more threes. So yeah.
-
I mean every game KU has lost this year they've shot 44% or worse on 2s.
Against OSU they shot 33% on 2s and 50% on 3s.
Against ISU they shot 44% on 2s and 39% on 3s.
Against Temple they shot 30% on 2s and 37% on 3s.
Against Kentucky they shot 20% on 2s and 3s.
Clearly the problem is jacking 3s and not making them in their losses. You may have a case for Kentucky, but they just sucked that game so it doesn't matter. The bigger issues in all their losses were bad defense and allowing teams to be very efficient offensively. But go ahead Bill and keep calling out the fool's gold and one this particular team's biggest strengths.

30% 3PA is about the Self average. I'm saying he could stand to adjust his philosophy a bit and shoot more because its probably the worst post scoring team Self has ever had. But yeah, he's still going to win this damn league. Again.

When was the last time Wisconsin won a national championship? Duke lost to Mercer in the first round of the tournament last year because they had no defense and relied too much on perimeter shooting. But yeah.

how have the mods not changed _Fan to stat boy yet?

When was the last time Wisconsin won a national championship? Duke lost to Mercer in the first round of the tournament last year because they had no defense and relied too much on perimeter shooting. But yeah.
In the last 10 years Duke has a NC, Elite 8s, Sweet 16s and league titles. Wisconsin has a F4, Elite 8s, Sweet 16s, and league titles. Similar to KU.
Both Coach K and Coach Ryan have adjusted their philosophy on 3s and 3PT attempts during that time and it has enhanced their programs. Ryan's teams have consistently shot 40% of their attempts as 3s the last 6 seasons. Coach K's teams have fluctuated more, but 4 of those 10 years his teams shot nearly 40% of their attempts.
You can read into that whatever you want.
Also, good to have you back Beems.

Good to be back, _FAN. I don't totally disagree with you, FWIW. Teams who shoot well from the perimeter can certainly get hot and rattle off a few wins in the NCAA tournament, but those teams have a more difficult time withstanding a bad shooting night, which is often something national championship teams have to do at some point in the NCAA tournament. You mention Duke, who won a national title in 2010, but 2010 is their only championship and Final Four appearance since 2004. They've been bounced from the 1st round of the tournament in three of the last eight years. In fact, in that time period, Duke has only made it past the 2nd round four times. The difference in that 2010 team is that they had a ton of size down low with the Plumlee brothers, Singler, Kelly, Thomas, and Zubek, and so they could defend the post and rebound well.
Similarly, Wisconsin really hasn't had that much success in the NCAA tournament until last year, when they reached the Final Four. In fact, in the last ten years, they've only made it past the Sweet Sixteen twice. In Bo Ryan's twelve seasons with the program, they've only gotten past the second round five times.

Fair enough.
My point for Self this year is that I don't think KU is riding Perry, Traylor, and Alexander to a NC or even a Final 4. Its really the first team from Self that doens't have a dominant big or bigs, and riding those guards and shooting from Mason, Selden, Greene, and Oubre is much more likely to result in a Final 4 run.
JMHO.

This simply isn't true. Good programs like Michigan, Florida, Wisconsin, and even Duke have had 3PA% in the upper 30s or 40s and regularly been top 4 seeds in the tournament and have success. There are multiple ways to win and shooting good 3s is definitely one of them.
Top 4 seeds isn't what we are talking about. We are talking about winning 6 games in the NCAA tournament. (At least, that is how I interpret Self's comments.)
And, the fact that good teams/programs sometimes shoot a lot of threes, and win, isn't the point. Duke could probably win a lot of games by shooting nothing but hook shots, but that doesn't mean that that is the BEST way for them to win games (let alone six games in a row).
I think Self is just stating what is obvious to most people: relying so heavily on three point shooting is less likely to result in a national championship than a team that pounds it inside more. It would be different if we were talking about a league championship or a seven-game series. But the NCAA tournament is one and done.
-
Remember when tHuggins taught Seff that the game's easier when you make shots?

Just looking at National Champions, the numbers indicate that Self's philosophy is a good idea, though I'll still contend 35% 3PA% is a good idea for his current KU team, among other things.

Good point. But Charles also mentioned that analytics didn't mean a team was good or would win in his comments.

IMHO, in the NBA, the best team usually wins. In college, matchups and analytics definitely have more of a role.

Cool chart. I hope you are right about Self's best option THIS YEAR being to let the three pointer fly. Because that would mean that this team is not as much of a threat to win it all. (Yes, I hate KU.) It's sorta like a football team that airs it out on every play. Teams that do this don't generally have the best team in the country, but these teams might have rationally decided to try to throw the ball and have some success rather than to pound the ball behind their overmatched offensive line and to punt every fourth play. Good teams don't win because they run the ball a lot, they win because they CAN run the ball successfully. KU having to rely on the three would be an admission that they can't line up and pound the ball behind their superior offensive line. Self seems to think that they can pound the ball if they choose to, but I hope you are right that they cannot.

KU is at their best when Perry and Traylor have driving lanes to get to the bucket. I think a lot of teams will take that away and force them to shoot.

One of the most confusing things about Big 12 basketball is Kansas fans' inability to see the irony* of making fun of songs like Sandstorm.
*I may be using irony wrong.

wow

I thought ku was gonna get that at the end. Perry had a perry good look. He did his Perry best.
-
Can you imagine rocking out to John Denver after big wins?
-
perry ellis
-
Ok, so maybe this KU squad is selfs worst team.
-
Beems is gonna be so pissed on here tomorrow. :frown:
-
How dare you butthurt taters acknowledge that west virginia won??!!! Pathetic
-
Beems is gonna be so pissed on here tomorrow. :frown:
Disagree. He'll come armed with the KSU -fans'-delight-in-KU-losses-solidifies-Jayhawks'-big-brother-status-over-Wildcats talking point.

This is by far my favorite thing about coal aggie and it isn't even close
-
Man that was a great game, this conference is really fun to watch sometimes
-
KU needs to thank us for sweeping OU. Hard looking out for little brother all the time.
-
I wonder how many will bitch about 4 steps.

its called home court advantage and they get it and some every single game

I wonder how many will bitch about 4 steps.
a minor contingency, largely drowned out by those shining light on the larger illegal court storming

what an absolutely amazing last play that would have been if Ellis had made that shot

beems would probably be here basking in the glory of it too :tsc:

I thought that Alexander guy was supposed to be a lottery pick or something? Is Self just destroying another poor kid?
-
I have an old KU friend that likes to post butthurt comments when KU loses. Like this one from last night:
I see nothing has changed about the big least. Still thugs.
They can never just say "good game" and move one... Always getting in the last punch.
-
How badly is Perry being tossed under the bus?
-
The admittedly subpar officiating is only part of what we are seeing here. Stepping back from this a bit, I think that for a number of years we have been seeing the "streetification" of the game. The demographics of basketball have evolved tremendously during the last two or three generations and so have the unspoken "rules". The referees are caught up in this too. I am from an older generation and I do not think the change that I see is good for the game, but that doesn't change the fact that the culture of basketball and its rules are evolving. It's a long and bitter discussion, but I'll stop now. It is what it is.

close enough.

Ppl on twitter and 810 have been really freaking out about Huggins 25K bonus that he gets after every win vs KU. I think it's pretty awesome and KU fans should feel great about it.
-
I believe he had the same contract clause while he was here.
-
I believe he had the same contract clause while he was here.
I like it. Bump it up to $50K/per and slip a clause like that into Weber's contract. For that matter, throw in an incentive for a few road wins.
-
Tejas is just ball screening OU to death.
-
OU pulling this out would be good for #noWednesdays
-
Tejas Meltdown? 8-0 OU run. Now up 2 under 2.
-
We could be in a tie for fourth by the end of saturday, that's just insane to think about after the last 4 weeks

Big 12 hoops (sans much of KSU's season) has been great entertainment.

Would be great to see a large part of coaches contract be win bonuses. Even against shitty teams.

I bet oscar got something when he beat KU last year. Like JC gave him a noogie or something and said: "you 'ole rascal, you!"

I know you all are reeling from a great win (rightfully so :emawkid:) but #Press Virginia has UT averaging a turnover every 60 seconds in the 1st 9 minutes...

Nice win. Hopefully that finally breaks their will.

They still have 2 road games as well, they may finish 5th. ISU fans have spent the last two days giving me a hearty THANK YOU, I've even gotten a couple of emails. I tell them to slow down and most just laugh, I did have a couple of the idiots tell me that they weren't losing again.

I should've been watching, but for those of us that weren't: iowa state was up 7 with 7 and a half to go last night, Baylor made 5 straight 3's in 5 possessions over the next 2 minutes and 40 seconds, to go up 6. That would've been a joy to watch.

Their defense was atrocious, only one of those 3s were guarded, Chery chucked one up guarded, but otherwise they may have well been in practice. Prince had 3 of them and Niang was nowhere to be found.
-
Baylor had multiple steals on after made basket in bounds plays in the last few minutes. I was embarrassed for them.

25 FT for Baylor, 9 for WVU...
Living so close to the Kentucky border I'm forced to watch this UK/Arky game and have to watch the WVU game on theScore... :curse:
-
If Texas wins (big if) OU will control their own destiny for a share of the outright.
If KU wins, there is still a reasonable chance at a 5 way tie for the conference title.
It could be a fun last couple of weeks.

I'm rock chalking hard right now, but they don't appear to want to win

If KU ends up 12-6 then WVU will have beaten them twice, and would probably also end up 12-6, unless they screw up against OSU (never count the 'Eers out of an unbelievable loss)...

ONE TRUE CHAMPION if Oklahoma beats ISU on Monday and WVU beats Kansas on Tuesday

I miss taking road trips to CU, but they never belonged in the Big12. Nebraska and Missouri were a natural fit for the conference, but I'm happy to see Nebraska mired in mediocrity. As for Mizzou, I'm glad the SEC is working out well for them.

What are the Big 12/NCAA rules on leaving the immediate bench area during a fight? In the NBA it's an automatic suspension even if you don't really get involved.

what's the tiebreaker rule?

Head to head then record against top team in conference, then 2nd. Etc

For us to tie with UT, they will have beat us twice.
I think he might also be implying a 3 way tie with us, UT, and OSU. In that case it looks like we'd be 8th, UT 7th, and OSU 6th.
And man, when OU's offense is going they are really good. It helps that ISU doesn't play a lot of defense and OU has the players to really exploit that.
-
This reads like no suspensions....at least from the NCAA rulebook...
http://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/BR13.pdf
Art. 8. Bench personnel leaving the bench area when a fight may break out or has
broken out. The head coach may leave the bench area in this case to prevent the
situation from escalating.
PENALTY: (Art. 8) Flagrant 2 technical fouls. Two free throws shall be
awarded to any player on the offended team, unless double
fouls are assessed. For double flagrant fouls, no free throws
are awarded. For any flagrant 2 technical foul, the ball shall be
awarded to the offended team at the point of interruption.
When anyone other than the head coach leaves the bench
and enters the playing court but does not participate in the
fight, only one technical foul shall be assessed regardless of
the number of offenders. This one foul is charged indirectly
to the head coach. For any single flagrant 2 technical foul,
the ball shall be awarded to the offended team at the point of
interruption. When a single flagrant 2 technical foul occurs
during intermission for the second or extra period, play shall
resume with a throw-in to the offended team on either side of
midcourt. This flagrant 2 technical foul applies toward the
team-foul total, and the offender(s) shall be ejected but not
subjected to suspension.

What's funny about this game is that it really isn't being played much differently than it was in the first half. OU took but made a good deal of bad shots while ISU missed quite a few open shots. OU is still taking awful shots but now they aren't making them, their offense just looks atrocious.

Has Baylor ever done anything that resulted in a positive for KSU? GD fn Drew how do they lose that fn game. Just looked at the Baylor @ UT box score. Texas won the game almost solely on blocked shots (11). That is terrifying. Baylor should of kept better control of the ball, but darn that is impressive.

Get your tickets to Wednesday night in kc; maybe we beat TCU, only to get demolished 18 hours later by a rested ku team. Fn drew hate that weirdo. Mayve in his post game prayer in the center of the fn court he should pray not to coach like an fn dipshit.
The way this season has gone, though, I wouldn't have expected anything different than bu screwing us over.
We're a full game clear of Texas, weirdo
We are playing on Wednesday night unless we beat UT on Saturday, moron. (And, I don't see that happening.) That was the result of last night's Baylor meltdown. A Wednesday night matchup with a TCU that we will be lucky to beat, followed by a game against KU the next afternoon. BU screwed us over with that collapse.

This is why you don't rely on other teams to do what you could have done earlier in the year. Baylor did nothing, K-State messed this season up long before February 2nd.

Without the Texas win, we still needed an @Texas win to stay even with a possible 2-more-wins OSU.

Yes, BTN triple-header. It's the only game with no EST teams. Plus Nubb is complete crap and IL is barely on the bubble.

there's no coach in the history of the b12 hoops league that rides the refs as hard as coach self does. i'm guessing he has bad pot withdrawal symptoms and needs to vent them

Don't have the link anymore, saw it on Twitter.

I'm not even sure if this team has a senior on it. Locking up 11str8 apparently took the fight out of them.

It was a valiant effort but it's not happening.

What a game, right? We beat a good team and some bad refs.

KU can't even shoot and they don't have a center this season. They're going to lose plenty of games in conference for someone else to step up and win it.

it's easy. you just wait six months and a much better sport appears that's way more fun.

Could happen

WuShock just dominated the final 25 minutes-----
Shock 72.7 eFG with only 5 TOs. The RockChalk 36.1 eFG with 10 TOs. OReb and made FTs only thing that prevented this from being a complete runaway in the 2nd half.
62 pts final 43 poss for WSU. :Woot:

I wasn't serious, but thanks guys! Hoping Huggs tightens 'em up this second half. :excited: :ohno:

I'll tell you what I still say IS nonsense, and that's worrying about the perception of the Big XII. Its all just media crap to fill up time.

Born on this date in 1943 was the first shortstop to win a gold glove for a team that has red as a color in the same year he hit 11 homeruns. Joe's KC could be yours IF YOU KNOW!"
