That's disappointing, Fort Scott has always been homecoming fodder for the other teams, at least the last 30 years at least. Anyway, sad deal for those who care about Fort Scott and the Jayhawk Conference.

They won a national title in 2009.  Watched them play Blinn College in the old Mineral Water Bowl (Excelsior Springs, MO) - Blinn used to be a funnel to Snyder's Wildcats (Michael Bishop among others ).   They were good in the 1960's and 70's, and had a brief resurgence about 15 years ago.
Cam Newton and I believe James Johnson (prince era RB) went to Blinn
it's easy to be emaw when EMAW is at your doorstep - FFF

FSCC has 97 kids on their roster.  I assume few if any of those kids would have attended FSCC otherwise.

Enrollment tanked at many community colleges due to the pandemic. Ft. Scott is actually in pretty good shape compared to many in the state. Independence is in the worst spot - their enrollment is now under 1,000. With the football team being close to 100 plus athletes from other sports, their enrollment is probably close to 50% student athletes.

Of course, their low enrollment is also due to the fact that it's stupid to have two community colleges that are 20 miles apart in the same county in rural Kansas.

I think FS and Indy both recently built turf practice field facilities recently as well. Not sure on cost, but had to be close to a mill each.

With Portal being a thing now, how relevant is JUCO football?  Is it going to die?

Yeah. No way any of them are able to keep any of their players for more than 2 years now.

In light of this ruling, Jucos may continue to survive.  Go to Juco for two years, then go make bag for four more.

They ended their program with an overall winning records, and played for the national championship at least once since 2000 - if my memory serves me correctly.  They won a natty in 1970.  I met the president of the college at some work functin, and she told me that the cost of sustaining a football program was just prohibitive.  I asked if Coffeyville CC was in the same boat, and she said that Coffeyville had an oil refinery in its tax base, and had about 10x the amount of money that Fort Scott has.

I keep bracing for the day Highland drops football.  I really thought they would have been at greater risk, historically, than Ft Scott.

I don't think Highland is in bad a shape as Independence, but some of these CCs have close to 50% of their students comprised of student-athletes. It's a similar story at some of the small NAIA colleges in the state. In essence, if you scrap a football team, you could lose 10-15% of your students. I'm sure the model is more sustainable at a 4 year school (4 years of paying tuition vs. 2), but student-athletes are essentially what's keeping the lights on at some of these schools.

When those juco's were established, Montgomery county was home to two oil refineries, and the international headquarters of Sinclair Oil - there was a pretty hefty tax base back in the day.  Now that both of those towns only are home to elderly residents and people too poor to leave, supporting two jucos in one county just doesn't work.  There's been a lot of discussion of consolidation, which would move most programs to Coffeyville because of its larger campus.  That is socially unacceptable in Independence, Kansas.

Two of my HS bro's played fball at highland back in the 00's and they did not enjoy their experience. Mostly because their team was terrible and the town was not exactly a town, just a CC in the middle of nowhere NEKS. It was the bottom of the barrel KS JUCO back then so its actually kind of impressive it outlasted Ft Scott.

I watched Butler beat Highland 89-0 back in like 2012 or something. My friend's brother played for Butler, then played for Texas Tech, then stole Kliff Kingsbury's visor and let us wear it after the 2013 KSU vs Tech game in Lubbock.

I think Highland CC got kind of good at football recently though.

I was at that game!

Felt awful for Highland because Butler essentially shut it down at halftime and even simple handoffs were going for 50 yard TD runs

Ryan Held was the coach when my son played there in 2013, then Aaron Arnold took over in 14 for a few years.  That was the most successful Highland had been ever in the Jayhawk.

Held would end up at UCF with Frost as RB coach then followed him to Nebraska.
