Seems like Mexican in Manhattan is hit or miss depending on what you order. The Burrito Supreme Steak at Los Portillos right now is by FAR my favorite dish anywhere.
you lost me as soon as you said los potrillos.

La fiesta has good carne asada and huevos rancheros.  Everything else is fake/sucks anyway.

i was really excited when they got those bfast bowls and then horrified when i actually tried one. best thing about spangles are the little dog treats/biscuits  that they give you if you have a dog in the car. think about that for a minute. that's the best thing about the place.

What's going on with boutique burger joints these days?  We have Five Guys, Smash Burger, Chef Burger (closed), and Blanc that have all opened in the KC area recently.  Larger national trend here.

it's relatively cheap and people love hamburgers.  they can go out and get a "nice" meal and it's cheaper than Houston's or where ever it is they consider nice.

Five Guys and Smash burger aren't boutique.

We have Five Guys and Smash in Omaha.  Clams let me onto some rumblings of Blanc coming in which I can't wait to get at.

jeebus do we need these many burger places. how about something else.

i would kill somebody in the back for a quality mexican establishment.

hillside cafe has great mexican, imo.  it's not frozen food like every other mexi place in Manhattan serves.

i used to go to hillside when it was in ogden because it was really good, but haven't been since it moved to mhk. thanks for reminding me. i'll go.

Yeah, hillside sucks.

crap. who to believe?  :dunno:

kk-which is the best mexican place?

i heard that hillside mhk was/is not close to as good as hillside ogd was fwiw.

All the mexican places in MHK are poor.  La Fiesta is edible.  Los Potrillos is bad (their salsa is garbage).  Colo Bolos is good food, but their salsa is also poor, and they don't really have much mexican food there.

Yeah, thought maybe the "not mexican food" thing was the hold up here.  You guys have their habanero sauce?  Spectacular imo.

Since we're talking about fast food burgers, I will throw this out there... In 'N' Out Burger has to be the most overrated restaurant known to man. I ate there twice over Spring Break and both times was horribly underwhelmed. First time I didn't try anything unique with my burger or fries and left disappointed so I went back and got both my fries and burger done animal style. Again, left disappointed. Anyone care to explain the hype for this place?

As far as Mexican in Manhattan goes...

From best to worst:

1. Cocobolos - probably not very authentic at all (I wouldn't know) but I love the Tijuana Trainwreck, Stacked Enchiladas and the Evil Desert Chicken
2. Hillside - been a few times and thought it seemed fairly authentic but again, I wouldn't know. No free chips and salsa which is pretty lame but the food was cheap. I thought that the tamales they serve on Fridays were good.
3. La Fiesta - pretty bland food but the salsa is ok and everybody just loves their "atmosphere." The only thing I'll usually get here are the Fajita Nachos which are actually pretty good.
4. Los Potrillos - been once, thought it was pretty similar to La Fiesta but had even worse atmosphere and the salsa wasn't very good, although I did appreciate that it was spicier than your average Mexican place in town.
5. Los Cocos - went once, hated it. Bad food and terrible service. Probably won't ever go again. I also thought El Caz was pretty mediocre considering all of the love it got.
6. Carlos O'Kellys -

it's legitimately good fast food, which is pretty rare.  if you had a fast food hamburger choice b/w InO, Hardees, Wendys, McDs, and BK, hopefully you would have enough perspective to choose InO.

Any MHK mexican list without Carlos OK is rubbish.  I dont care if it is a chain or that it is tex-mex and non authentic.  Carlos is a winner every time.,
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

The Habanero is a staple of my Coco Bolo's eating experience, its very good.

I mean, sure, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't spectacular either. And I expected spectacular because of how in love with the place people are. I would put it above all of the options you listed, however, if I was faced between the option of In N Out or Hardees, it would probably be 50/50 depending on what I was in the mood for. The lack of options at In N Out could give the edge to Hardees on certain days.

The best chain fast food-ish burger place that I've been to is Five Guys, IMO. It's not really fair to compare their fries with In N Outs because they're so different but I like the fries at Five Guys better. All the toppings you get to choose from at Five Guys is really what gives them the edge. Oh, and the peanuts.

Hardees is gross processed crap loaded with MSG/sodium.  InO and Five Guys is fresh fast food.  They put a Five Guys in across from my office and I have to throttle how often I go there, I don't want to die quite yet.

Fair enough... In my defense, it's been a year or two since I've been to Hardees.

Anybody had the kelly burger at Grandstand Burger in Merriam?   :lick:

Wish there was a Whataburger in KC.  The ads during basketball season always make me  :curse:.

There's a new boutique burger place in PV called BGBR.  Think I'm gonna try it out tonight.   :ohno:
