I often wonder how the meeting to pitch this show went. I imagine it like this:
"Alright guys, I got this great idea for a TV series. Two detectives, get this, are quite a bit different and don't really get along. One of them has a past of drug abuse, and one of them cheats on his wife. So you see, they're not good upstanding citizens like you think cops would be! I know, it's crazy, but bear with me. Anyways, they start investigating a murder. But here's the thing, there's not only one murder! You find out that it's connected to a string of murders. And I got to thinking, you know, as if this show isn't crazy and original enough, let's have one of the cops investigate it when he shouldn't be! We'll have the captain of the police department make him turn in his badge and gun and everything, but this dude just doesn't care! HE KEEPS INVESTIGATING ANYWAY!!! What do you guys think?"
"So....we're doing a CBS detective drama?"
"Yes, of course. Did you not just hear the plot?"
"Ugghh, you know, I just don't think I have time for this."
"Okay, okay, hear me out. What if I call up AMC, HBO, you know, the big dogs, and see if they want to pick us up?"
"Don't waste your time with AMC, they already have The Killing, which is exactly what this is."
"Fine, I'll just call HBO."
"Okay, if HBO's in, I'm in."
"GREAT!"
