A tale of 2 cities is a great story, helps to know the context of the Revolution and what was going on.  Probably good to listen to some podcasts or something before starting it

May I suggest Mike Duncan (who did the History of Rome) podcast? His entire podcast for the French Revolution is pretty damn good. All the set up episodes as well provide fantastic context
Can I just listen to the Les Mis soundtrack like five times instead?

I'm sure that helps but it's just as fun going in largely ignorant

Wikipedia works great as a companion piece to difficult reads IMO

Alternatively, you could just watch Dark Knight Rises.

Been on a Stephen King tear lately. The Shining, 11/22/63 and now halfway through Pet Semetary. I'm not sure when my dad tendencies to read historical and/or more high brow crap kicks in, but it certainly hasn't yet.
I have books like A Tale of Two Cities in my to-read stack but I just keep reaching for stuff that isn't that mentally taxing to get thru.

I love A Tale of Two Cities, but it took me a 10 hour flight for me to get into it. Doubt I would have been able to dive in if a TV or laptop was around.
Just finished it this afternoon. Wish I would have read it sooner.

This came in the mail today.

Hard back box set is so hot. I was gifted the paper backs 1-6 in the 2nd grade and went with my sister to the midnight release of deathly hallows book that summer.

Also, I'm never going to think of Sydney's in the same way again -- right up there with the Jean Valjean's of the world IYAM.

Always planned to name my first child Sydney.  Then I met Mrs. DQ who decided she ought to have a say too.

One of the kids brought home _The Underground Railroad_ by Colson Whitehead. I'm about halfway through. It is a gutwrenching read so far. Also have _The Nickel Boys_ in the to-read stack.

i'm reading Dune.

i am not a reader. it's been years since i read a book for "fun." i'm about 100 pages in and loving it. taking it slow.

finished! enjoyed it quite a bit. beyond excited to watch the movie. i finally allowed myself to watch the trailer, i had shunned all Dune movie content until i finished the book.

dune 1 & 2 are both really good, i will be looking forward to your review after having read the first book. what's your approach to the rest of the book series?

probably Option 3. i will certainly read Messiah and that will likely carry me into wanting to read everything in the series that was written by Frank Herbert himself.

re: Option 5, the version of Dune i read had an epilogue that was written by his son. when he said that he continued the Dune series and wrote books himself, i was instantly skeptical. that sounds bad and confirmed why a couple people told me not to bother with the later books. so i won't be touching option 5.
