TCU pak bros: sorry I had to leave town. Was able to make it home to spend the last 48 hours with my Mom.
We've been celebrating her life this week.

Gonna win 'em all!
Sorry about the news bud. I'm happy you got to spend time with her. That was way more important.

My almost 8 year old Lab/Husky mix tore his ACL on Wednesday night. Took him to the Vet on Thursday because of his obvious pain and gimp back leg. They quickly verified his torn ACL. Now I'm torn myself on how to proceed.

-Send to Abilene Vet hospital or KSU Vet center and have surgery to repair ACL $1500 minimum
-Rely on pain meds and sufficient rest and hope it 'heals' itself

I'm beginning to see a big problem with this equation because I don't think it'll heal itself and I don't think I can go through with paying for that surgery. I'm wrestling with the justification of paying for my dog's life and that rough ridin' sucks. He's a 95 lb. beast and his hips are already beginning to show signs of giving out. I fear this is his downfall.

lefty,

it is entirely possible for the joint to heal itself (not really, but often the dog can manage just fine with the damaged joint).  some of it depends on the dog, some depends on treatment/therapy and a lot just depends on the exact nature of the injury.  regardless, the pain part of the immediate injury will quickly fade away.

i'd recommend spending some time googling around.

btw, turmeric and fish oil has almost completely alleviated (for now) my dog's arthritis symptoms.

Lefty I have a friend who has repaired his lab's ACL twice with the TLPO procedure.  He knows a lot about dogs, labs especially, and I'd be happy to put you in contact with him.  He's EMAW btw.  He won't bullshit you.

thanks for everyone's good wishes. it oddly felt comforting coming from screen names. thanks for advise as well.

ACL update- it's only been about 5 days, but Dog seems to be adapting to hobbling around. he has been able to adapt to climbing stairs which makes his mobility easier for going in/outside. the pain has seemed to subside a bit. even when the injury occurred he didn't whine or yelp to make it audible, but I could tell he was hurting. his temperament has seemed to be rejuvenated.

I'm going to give it a few more weeks and see how he progresses. He's still on pain meds twice a day and I've restricted his play quite a bit. I don't think I'll go the TLPO surgery route.

Going to google the turmeric and fish oil for arthritis help....

had a weird feeling at work this morning and left to check on my gma - got to be with her when she passed.  we had a lot of fun doing some stud cheering for the royals together over the last few months

My IRL bro called me one day in March 2012 and told me I should come see my gma. I bailed on fanning and the rest of the Pittsburgh, PA tourney games. Was totally worth it. So glad I got to talk to her, because she died a week later.

My other gma had dementia before she died (maybe Alzheimer's). But I visited her a month before she died and there was like a 3 minute moment of sanity when she "met" my wife.

One gpa died on Christmas Eve when I was five and the other just checked out a year before he died. So, actually getting to connect with my gmas was really important to me.
"How will I recruit to Manhattan? Well, distance. And the proud state of basketball. It start there, and then daily flights to Dallas, because I'm really good at going out. Like top five good. Ask my wife. She wants me to be happy."
