The struggle isn't comparable.

Jfc, I'm not saying it's the same thing.
Anyway, the Jackie Robinson comparison was not at all essential to that column, not even sure how he tied it together
Also, Robinson was literally excluded from playing in MLB for a portion of his career. And it was officially sanctioned. It's not like you could be an in the closet minority.

Jackie Robinson didn't have the opportunity to choose when the time was right to confront racism. There's no hiding it. Being gay, while not a choice either, you usually get the opportunity to choose when to confront the bigotry, or even choose not to. You can keep it private.

Being gay, while not a choice either, you usually get the opportunity to choose when to confront the bigotry, or even choose not to. You can keep it private. You can't keep it private if rumors have already started swirling among your potential employers and there's a chance it'll be common hearsay pretty soon. The idea that you can choose when to or when not to confront hatred for what you are and there's no pressure to have the courage to reveal yourself to others is rather ignorant of realities.
Quote from: MakeItRain on February 10, 2014, 03:29:17 PMAnyway, the Jackie Robinson comparison was not at all essential to that column, not even sure how he tied it togetheri think he tied it together by comparing the excuses that people made at the time to justify why it shouldn't happen. can't handle it, poor locker room morale, other teammates would not accept it, etc. and then saying that those sounded reasonable to a lot of people at the time but that in hindsight they all sound really, really, stupid.
posnanski is really one of the worst writers in the world. Rick Reilly looks down on him.
