Posnanski knocks it out of the park.

that was good

I liked the totality of what he said, I hate the Jackie Robinson comparison

how come?

If someone had said "maybe Jackie Robinson just needs some pussy" in 1944 or whatever, no one on message boards would have PI'd the crap out of that person.

we've come a long way

can we have a master list of what people, groups, political parties, religions, universities, genders, age groups, etc. that are
goEMAW approved for mocking, laughing at, and general good time fooling around with and which social segments are on
goEMAW protected list. Thanks, I just don't want to bigot off in the wrong direction.

if you need a list then you need to get your ass away from our message board

Well, can I make fun of republicans on here?

Jackie Robinson literally risked his life breaking the color barrier, if a fan calls Sam a fudgepacker they would rightfully be barred from attending games for life. The struggle isn't comparable.

Also, Robinson was literally excluded from playing in MLB for a portion of his career.  And it was officially sanctioned.  It's not like you could be an in the closet minority.

That was my first thought. Jackie Robinson didn't have the opportunity to choose when the time was right to confront racism. There's no hiding it. Being gay, while not a choice either, you usually get the opportunity to choose when to confront the bigotry, or even choose not to. You can keep it private.

You can't keep it private if rumors have already started swirling among your potential employers and there's a chance it'll be common hearsay pretty soon.  The idea that you can choose when to or when not to confront hatred for what you are and there's no pressure to have the courage to reveal yourself to others is rather ignorant of realities.

i think he tied it together by comparing the excuses that people made at the time to justify why it shouldn't happen. can't handle it, poor locker room morale, other teammates would not accept it, etc. and then saying that those sounded reasonable to a lot of people at the time but that in hindsight they all sound really, really, stupid.

In this case you can. It isn't the ideal way to live, but it can be done.  Sam chose to fight and should be proud.

Yep.  NFL executives have already been quoted saying things like Sam is a potential "distraction" and a "risk" to the organization.  Discrimination is discrimination, regardless of who it's against.

The only thing I truly miss about Posnanski is not having him writing at the star simultaneously with Whitlock because from about 1994-1999 it was the easiest way for a Tuck (racist) to accidentally self-identify.

Tucks loathed the brash and aggressive Whitlock and loved the over-sentimental Posnanski.
