How does dirt get inside a sub anyway?

It's probably mostly accumulated gross human leavings.  Hair, dead skin, spit, sweat, blood, semen, phlem, stuff like that.

dont forget smegma

Sebum you think?

have you ever gone to the bathroom or cooked anything or taken a shower or used a nuclear powered submarine before?

you know how you get more wasted on airplanes because of the altitude? well, like, do you get less wasted on a submarine since its at below sea level? man, itd be so great to be like I drank 150 beers last night and I still drove this sub home!

Funny thing, the most junior guys drive. Seriously. Now, there are a few other people immediately around him to slap him in the back of the head(for real) if he screws up. But yeah, this...

Also, no alcohol onboard.

Helm, all ahead full.
All ahead full, helm, aye.
Officer of the deck, maneuvering answers all ahead full.
Very well, helm.
Dive, make your depth 400 feet.
Make my depth 400 ft, dive, aye.  Full dive on the fairwater planes, 15 degree down angle, make your depth 400 ft.
Helm, right full rudder, steady course one three zero.
Right full rudder, steady course one three zero, helm, aye.  Officer of the deck, my rudder is right full.
Very well, helm.
Dive, make your depth one six zero feet.  Helm, all ahead two thirds.  Maneuvering, Conn, make turns for seven knots.
Make turns for seven knots, maneuvering, aye.
All stations, Conn, proceeding to periscope depth.
Conn, Nav, aye.
Conn, Sonar, aye.
Conn, Radio, aye.

and so on...
There are 10 types of people in this world.  Those who understand binary and those who don't.

We either have a 3rd submariner in our midst, or a really thorough Googler.

Either way, nicely done. Mocat is gonna need new jorts.

Did your CO have a really small dog that he carried around and it sat on his lap all calm during battles?

Pretty damn big!

No, he let the dog bark out orders.  ;)

Depending on the answers to the unanswered questions in this thread, this has the potential to be the best thread of 2014.

Really want to know the answer to the SD question about "silence, drop to the bottom, or floor it?"

Read that last night in terminal A at ATL. I laughed so long that people were giving me very strange looks.

Maybe all of your writing in this thread should be as if you were talking to your CO. I am pretty sure you would say "Wow" to your CO, so fix that crap and don't let it happen again. STAT!

Do you really get that annoyed if somebody says "ship" instead of "boat"?
Yes. We really do. It's a historical thing.

was the XO everybody's pal, while the skipper was a big dickhead?
CO wasn't dick, but he wasn't buddy-buddy either. XO was cool, but not nearly as cool as the NAV(Navigator). If he liked you, when we would run while surfaced and you were lucky enough to be in the sail with him, you could burn a stogie together, his treat. One of the coolest things I ever saw was what I didn't. Up in the sail, in the middle of the night, and all around you nothing but pitch black, and the sound of the water breaking over the bow. Re: submarine sandwiches.
Originated from shipyard workers in Groton, CT. No, not a staple food onboard. "They" say that submariners are the best fed sailors in the Navy, and for the first week or two of an underway (and immediately after a port call) they're right. After the fresh milk and eggs run out though? Not so much.

Quote from: mocat
have you ever been to Challenger Deep? I know you have. how badass did you feel after when you knew you survived?
Depth questions are a no go. Sorry.

Quote from: SD
can you launch other stuff out of the torpedo tubes like they launched Spock's corpse out of the Enterprise in Wrath of Khan? like just toss an apple core and some other garbage in there and blast it to the fish?
As a Torpedoman(TM) I can tell you it was way too tedious to do that.

Will tackle more asap. Stay tuned.

I was imagining the sound of an 8 cylinder running about 500 horse power with glass packs popping. Really disappointing to hear that it isn't like that.

Do you get to practice being on the sub before you have to commit to going? Like stay in the sub for a few hours to see if you totally lose your mind or something.

You'll definitely cavitate the screw if you go from all stop to all ahead flank. Best to incrementally increase but what's the fun in that?

No but you do go through some different drills for fire fighting and flooding. If you can't handle the drills in a controlled environment, then you can't handle being on the sub.

I think skimmers get offended if you call their ship a boat.  :shakesfist: I didn't care what you called it. Both worked for me.

Why do they say "flank?"  Flank means to the side right?

is the official food the submarine sandwich? if not, why not?
I don't think there was an official food. We ate well underway. It was rare that we had a bad meal. Half way night (roughly midway through patrol) was the best meal. Prime rib. King crab. Mmm. Mmm. Usually had some leftovers for the next couple of dinners too.
