I mean if a restaurant is serving me unsafe or unsanitary foods then I just won't go back.  Capitalism solves that crap right there.

it does, actually.  in tons of countries where the food tastes way better than ours and sells for way less.

Sys, by no means do clean kitchens and the absence of rat poop equate to lower quality food.   A bunch of food in 'Merica sucks because a bunch of 'Mericans only like bland, fried, low quality food.

it means there aren't people on every corner selling delicious food out of their car, food stand, garage, etc. to make a little extra cash.

Again, it would all be hotdogs and chicken fingers.  Has everything to do with what ppl in this country eat not how dirty it can be.

it has nothing to do with how dirty or clean, it's about barriers to entry.

True mostly.  But have you been to the Manhattan, KS farmers market?

It is ok, but there are no barriers to entry and it isn't super awesome with tons of mexicans selling breakfast burritos.

there are barriers to entry.  vendors are restricted to times and places where they might not wish to be, and many of their potential customers may not wish to be.

This is more of a permit issue than a food safety regulation issue.

I bought tamales from a guy on the street in aggieville.  He had them in a cooler in the trunk of his car. Haven't seen him in many years :(

not trying to argue that food inspectors & food safety regs are the only, or even the most salient causes of the lack of street food and lack of good cheap food in the us.  obviously, pop. density is by far the most important.  just arguing that they don't help.

haven't really argued it, but would also argue that they aren't necessary (no tragedy of commons, no massive disparity in capital, scale, information between producers/consumers, etc.).

On basically every medium and large construction jobsite in KC, there are multiple cars/trucks that pull up for break times and lunch and serve all kinds of stuff.  Some are trucks that are permitted and associated with local restaurants.  Others are honda civics stuffed full of coolers that are all stuffed full of breakfast burritos that d00d made in his home kitchen.

Never once did any of them get in trouble that I saw.  The street corner stand not existing is real and is def a permit issue as that is actually an extremely political thing in KC, but the car thing happens all the time and only seems limited by how big of an outlet they need to justify stopping and selling.

Regulations have killed entrepreneurship for the poor.

it'd be great if there was a party for people that were anti-regulations, but not anti-govt services (and taxes to pay for).

and by the presence of people who grew up in countries where this behavior isn't considered aberrant.

For ppl that think this is aberrant,  they always sell out of product.
