Fairway is a stones throw from Prairie Village. If you think Fairway made a ruckus. Imagine if PV got one. They're pretty  :opcat: there.  Hell, they freaked out over a state of the art retirement home that 50% of the residents are just days away from needing to be in.

That Walmart really sucks too (compared to the average Walmart).  The price chopper right there is fantastic tho.

The differrent premade Fajita Mix's at that price chopper are

It's also only like 5 blocks down the street that they are moving

In other news, Topeka is getting a 4th Walmart at 25th and California, and the neighborhood residents are super pumped about it.

That's not necessarily true about Topekans being excited.  Most of the immediate residents were going with lists of concessions to get it built.  Wal Mart obviously gave them everything.

My mother in law was complaining about how it would increase traffic as she lives down the road.  I told her that it's a huge positive because the police will actually give a crap now, and she won't be running from the sound of gunshots when walking her dog (true story).

I lived a hundred yards from a Wal Mart in Lee's Summit a few years back.  It was great.  Incredibly handy since it was open 24/7.

I ate pan fried chicken in Fairway last week. It was awesome. I didn't see any Mexicans.

Then all of those residents, one by one, read that letter, nodded to themselves, and grunted "mmm hmm".

that said if I lived there I'd try to keep Walmart out too, because I would've paid a ridic amount per square foot for my house and would want to make sure that price keeps going up.

How do you know a wal mart (in a nearby town) wouldn't make home prices go up even more? Are there any concrete examples of wal mart causing long-term housing price declines?

perception is reality mich. isn't that why MHK did not allow WalMart on seth child, but allowed Target? (that could just be a myth, but i've heard it multiple times)

I think it may have a short term impact, but I think that perception goes away very quickly. Which is why I was wondering if there were any studies done on this. I guess I could google:

http://www.dailyfinance.com/2012/06/26/where-walmart-builds-higher-home-prices-follow/

Quote
That's the finding of a new report out of the University of Chicago and Brigham Young University, which finds that when Walmart builds a store anywhere from half a mile to one mile from your home, your resale value rises 1% to 2%. Even better, it turns out that the closer to Walmart you are, the more money you get -- homes located less than half a mile from a new Walmart see their values increase by 2% to 3% on average.

Ah... Thought that was still Roeland Park. It's about 5 minutes from my house in Mission. (Which, coincidentally, is across the street from a family of Mexicans)

The is a shot of what appears to be a 4 paragraph letter (single spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman most likely) in this video on Fox 4's website
http://fox4kc.com/2013/08/20/mans-description-of-walmart-customers-offends-some-residents/

A number of the less enlightened residents of the area call the current Wal Mart "Mexi Mart" in addition to calling the adjacent Price Chopper "Mexi Chopper"; I would love to find an image of the the letter to see if/how the author the managed to tip toed around using that verbiage.

This is one of the rare occasions that carnes is correct - Westwood and Westwood Hills are two different cities

I have heard it referred to as the "Wal-Martinez".

I've also heard that Price Chopper is fantastic.  Legend has it that they stock different stuff there than other Price Choppers, and it's amazing.  But I've never been, so I can't confirm.

Maybe if you live in Fairway and want to think its nicer.  Otherwise, no.  It's basically KCK
