Fairway, KS: Wal-Mart shoppers do not live here
« on: August 21, 2013, 04:28:26 PM »
Former Fairway City Councilman John Ridenour:

Quote
Ridenour warned about the negative effect on property values of allowing bigger houses on small lots. And he pointed to Wal-Mart’s plan to close its store in Roeland Park and open a new one in Mission, just down Shawnee Mission Parkway from Fairway.

“When that happens all of their customers of the old store will shop at the new one,” Ridenour wrote. “Our neighborhood will get noticed and some will want to move into it. BE HONEST with yourself. Most of them are of a different class in that they do not feel the desire of a beautiful neighborhood and maintaining property values. When they move in we will start to see junk cars in disrepair in front yards along with other trash, and down will go the property values. BIG TIME!!!”

It's also only like 5 blocks down the street that they are moving

In other news, Topeka is getting a 4th Walmart at 25th and California, and the neighborhood residents are super pumped about it.

Do you guys really want a bunch of poor people buying up all your properties and building giant houses? I know I don't.

Yes, currently all the hispanics from KCK go to the Wal-Mart in roeland park. They are moving it .5 miles down the road right next to fairway.

It's pretty laughable that he thinks Mexicans are going to pay 330k for a 1500 sq ft house when they could buy one for 90k 2 minutes away.

this is why i choose to live in disgusting wichita. virtually no poors. and no walmarts that druggie moms leave their kids in shopping carts at because they dont have the responsibility or maturity to care for. http://www.kansas.com/2013/06/22/2858957/mother-26-arrested-after-leaving.html (but at least walmart has that cute KU tshirt she wanted)

fairway is an awesome town to drive through, and extremely pretty, but I think living there would kind of suck.  $300k for a 1500 sq ft house is just silly when you can live in a nicer, bigger house, for the same money, in a neighborhood that's also very pretty, that aren't that far away.  jmo bros.

that said if I lived there I'd try to keep Walmart out too, because I would've paid a ridic amount per square foot for my house and would want to make sure that price keeps going up.

One of my old roommates was in charge of putting a new Walmart in Lawrence 6-7 years ago or whatever. He had some great stories about town hall meetings and stuff where he basically told everyone "STFU you're all gonna shop there".
"How will I recruit to Manhattan? Well, distance. And the proud state of basketball. It start there, and then daily flights to Dallas, because I'm really good at going out. Like top five good. Ask my wife. She wants me to be happy."

Fairway doesn't have any sidewalks or even paths leading to the front door. It's a very uninviting place, even for a suburb.
