they should make a law that says people aren't allowed to move under penalty of federal law

I think they tried that in atlas shrugged

Wow, that sounds like a great book.

I got a letter from a guy yesterday exempting himself from the rule of law, under the law.

Durham has horrible schools and high crime. If you don't have kids, it is a great place and most affordable in the Triangle. Who are you going to work for? PM if you are trying to be incognito.

Novartis, but I will be working on site at the Duke Campus. No kids, but that sucks about the high crime.  Guess I will have to carry a lacrosse stick around with me. Have you lived in Durham or just been there for work? I'm trying to find a place (house w/yard for dog) close to campus but there seems to be an abundance of shitholes.

I don't live in Durham. I am in the Containment Area for Relocated Yankees (herp derp). Durham probably isn't as bad as it gets made out to be. There are some good places and you can avoid the higher crime areas. Chapel Hill would be worth a look. North Raleigh is booming. Take your time in choosing where you want to live. Is this a long term proposition? If it is a 2-3 year gig, then who gives a crap and party on. Go Royals.
If it is going to be longer, then I'd put a little more thought into. Go Bulls.

It's an 18 month contract but I would have the option of staying in RTP so I'll be renting for now. Yeah I'm going to fly down there in a couple weeks and look around, will def check into chapel hill I had no idea how close it was.  Thanks for the recommendos friends. It will be nice to live close to a true blue blood basketball program (NC State). I'm a bit of a basketball historian and Kansas City just doesn't have quality live basketball unless you want to drive hundreds and hundreds of miles.

Schools matter if your child has special needs.  So, if you're being a d-bag about a school to be a d-bag, then yeah, STFU, but if your kid has a legitimate need and you don't want to pay $15k a year to send them to private school, you're going to be picky about what school district you're in.

The differences between SMS and SME do not require private schools to come into the equation.

And, I know michigan was discussing me when talking about the bushes.  I said that's not why we were moving.  I said it would hurt us when we sell, and it will.  You're always going to have people in their neighborhoods who don't give a damn about maintaining their property unless you live in a neighborhood with a militant HOA.  That's not what most of us are looking for.  However, a nice neighborhood with other kids to play with, people who give a crap about their property, and neighbors that will share a beer with you in your driveway are things that some people care about.

So why didn't you move to a place like that in the first place?

RE: SMS/SME - I don't care about any of that.  My wife and I are looking at two school districts in KC because they can handle our oldest son's needs, and SM isn't one of them.  Outside of that, I don't care what elementary, middle, or HS they go to as long as the entire district treats him the same from one school to the other.

RE: Where we live - At the time we looked for homes, we had no children, and I traveled a lot, so I wanted to be close to work and the airport.  As we started having kids, circumstances dictated that we look elsewhere.  Also, when we were looking for homes at that time, our income was substantially less, and now we can afford much more, so we can now get into a home that fits our needs and sits in a desired location.

I know that you don't know me or my situation, so I'm not offended.  However, these choices are not as simple as you make them out to be, and it's not as convenient as painting some of us as uncultured rubes that are scared of poor people.

looks like you've nailed my outlook. Also, thanks for the life lesson.

you are such an bad person

moving is like the only time i will legitimately consider getting a Kindle

also: probably going to get lots of corny jokes from my friends about my boxes full of books because they're packed in various boxes from the liquor store (great way to score small/medium size boxes for free)

"hur hur did you read the letter that johnnie walker read :D"

"dude how do you even know that reference you're like 25"

"GTA san andreas"

instead of boxes and boxes of books, i have boxes and boxes of cd's... and i just can't get rid of them for some reason.  pretty much any other junk i have has been culled away during moves tho.
