The last time I moved, I just went to a liquor store and they gave me a whole car load of good, sturdy boxes for free.

Veteran of 14 moves (yep...former Riley Rat).  Tell them what you want up front during the walk through, go buy them lunch and drinks, and don't hover over them.  Your stuff will make it there.  A few things may be scratched or broken.  That's the nature of a move.  You try moving 15,000 lbs, of crap and see how much of it arrives unmolested.  Believe it or not, these guys generally do want to do a good job and appreciate the feedback.  Also, if you're hiring on your own, the budget company is absolutely NOT the way to go.  Experience counts in this business.

All I own is like a computer, bed, couch, and tv. Basically nothing else.

After they get done they sometimes tell stealers about all the stuff you have and where you live and the best ways to break in.  Steve Dave's stuff is living on borrowed time.  I am not happy about his pending residential burglary.  Not one little bit.

8mBro and roommates all worked for a moving company during college, now 8mBro helps run it. Some movers are great, others are scarily bad

I moved today. It's definitely in the conversation of the worst days of my life.  I can't wait to have enough money to hire movers. That's my goal in life. Any wealth beyond that is gravy.

Had to move a couch up 3 very vertical, very narrow flights of stairs.  Took 45 minutes.  Then we got to our door and realized it wasn't going to fit inside.  Now we have a couch in our sunroom area and an empty living room.

Neither of our couches would fit in the stairwell to our new basement.

Therefore, I have two couches in my living room and two chairs in my basement.  My wife hates it, but honestly, I really like it.  Last night, we both laid down and watched Game of Thrones. It was nice.

dlew, did you call professional moves just for the couch? They have found some ways to fit crap through doorways that I thought impossible.

each couch and doorway situation is a unique brain puzzle with at least one and sometimes ONLY one correct solution.

Did you try putting the lower part through the doorway and then rotating?

3D print a smaller version of the couch that fits inside the door way (maybe a palm sized version even b/c not heavy), then go inside the new place and bring your 3D printer inside new place and print out the bigger couch just as big as you want it to be.

3D printers = amazing science

Got done moving up to a 2nd floor apartment yesterday. Getting stuff out of the attic to load was the absolute worst (90 and humid outside, 110 and stifling in the attic) and I got drenched yet people kept trying to hug me and stuff when they showed up/were leaving and i'm like seriously what are you doing stahp. Unloading went easier than expected except for the time I fell on my ass hauling a couch up the stairs (thatsourmack.jpg). Forgot to bring pillows for the bed though so I had to improvise with some emaw hoodies. wasn't the worst thing in the world.

Dealing with getting my rough ridin' Time Warner router working, on the other hand...

We tried everything except for the pro movers (we're not trillionares, people) and the 3d printer.  I'm very intrigued by this 3d printer idea.  Do they have some I could rent?
