I'm actually worried they get the hire right this time. I mean they can't screw it up 3 times in a row. I think they can actually pull a decent hire too.

Following by far the greatest coach in a program's history will no doubt be tough and not a great selling point for KSU.  Inheriting a better team, having ridiculously better facilities, better fan support, and paying more money are all in K-State's favor.  Maybe they can sell a coach on winning in the 1920s or having a stadium built then or whatever, but in most coaches lifetimes K-State has had the better program.

Our current coach is paid more than their former one.  I'm not sure why they think KU has more money for a FB coach than us. Endowment?

Yeah, the next guy might not be a rock star, but hiring a 4-7 win a season coach can't be that difficult

they have money.  they paid Charlie about 2.5m.  I'd imagine they could get a good coach for that or even 2.0M.  Dave Doeren's salary at NC State is around 1.9M. there is literally  no reason they can't get someone good.  weis was a big WTF hire.  they simply can't eff it up that badly again.

ku is a good opportunity because it isn't like Bill has made us into some monster.  we're vulnerable, especially considering bill's age and the fact he's retired once already and has said he's going to retire at some point.  the state has available juco players to infuse immediate talent and close enough to TX and OK to find some guys.  also, you'll get paid.

If they want someone proven it's going to take a hell of a lot more than 2.5. Didn't Tech re sign Kliff for 3? Doren isn't leaving NCSU because it's a far better job than KU. They are absolutely at the place now that K-State was in '89. The program has way too many issues for a coach at even a decent big 5 conference school to take that chance. That is the worst job in D1.

If Leavitt is looking to leave SF, which should be because Harbaugh is leaving, he would be a good target. Wolford would also be good, Tressel still has a show cause, I'd assume that extends to any role directly with athletics.

It isn't, but you think they had a choice with Mangino? He lost 7 straight conference games with what should have been the best team in the history of the program. All of those players hated him and essentially quit. Recruiting would have been a complete nightmare.

It doesn't make any sense.  KU has one 1-win season in the last 25 years.  That's really not the norm for KU.  Last year was a complete transition year for Weis and the football program.  Weis weeded out a bunch of players that didn't cut it athletically and/or academically, and took a short-term hit in order to set a precedent.  Even with that, KU was still able to run on teams last year, and almost pulled off a couple upsets (yeah, I know, moral victory HUR HUR HUR!!!).  Weis hired some good assistant coaches and a stud strength coach from Florida.  I don't know... this feels more like Mangino's second year to me than Turner Gill's.  It also looks to me like K-State has drifted back to the mean a little bit.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I like how they're even bringing up the fact that Michigan and Florida are looking for coaches.  KU is not competing with UM and UF so they shouldn't really worry about it.

They should be focusing on programs like Tulsa, Indiana, and Vanderbilt and praying that they aren't in the market for a new coach.

One guy wants Ruffin Mcneil.  He'd be a homerun hire, imo, but he'd be a fool to leave ECU for KU right now.

Indiana is probably pleased with their coach, which is what KU should aspire to -- basketball school playing somewhat respectable football. I have know idea how far Purdue is into their current coach's tenure, but that program has taken a nose dive.

Yea she was. I think Mangino is a non starter for that reason.

She had just been on campus for a couple of months, it was clearly a Lew decision and most of the issues were Lew v. Mangino. But like I said it's not like Mangino left them a choice. And. There are several reasons why Mangino is a non starter, namely the fact that since he was fired 5 years ago he will have 1 season as an assistant at a program that will finish the season with 3 or 4 wins.

Absolutely. He can surely land at a much better place.

Oh that'd be good for them, I wouldn't be afraid of him but that would still be a good hire

He already is at a better place.  He has ECU's stadium full and the pirates rolling.  He'd be a fool to make what is a lateral move (at best) and have to rebuild another crap show to get back to where he essentially is right now.

Yeah, I was skeptical when ECU hired him initially (who would want Mike Leach's DEFENSIVE coordinator?!) but he's done very well.

I didn't mean doeren would leave, just that ku could hire someone with his resume now for 2-2.5m. Kliff got hired at 2.1m.
Not sure I agree with the ksu '89  but might be semantics.

all things considered, dimel wouldn't be a bad hire for them. he's been a head coach before and i wouldn't really say he failed, despite getting let go at houston. he's also been in the area/big12 for a while and plucking him would hurt us which should also add points to the hire. players seem to like him and other coaches seem to like and respect him. he's basically running kstate football right now. i wonder who he could get from kstate and if guys like joe bob or michael smith would be willing to join him. i bet he would at least make them respectable. five/six wins, etc.

Would Dimel take the job?

if he thinks he has a shot at ksu head coach within the next few years, he obviously stays. if knows he has no shot, then why not?
