While I'm impressed they got it done, I'm still hopeful to see flocks of gulls dive bombing and shitting all over the place.

On a related note - seems like a great place for a Flock of Seagulls concert at some point.

The Ryan Stadium Rebuild will be the most expensive on campus sports facility project in collegiate athletic history.

The price tag of that, plus the price tag of their basketball arena renovation, plus that practice/sports complex they built at the lake (not the temp stadium), will have a final price tag of approximately $1.2 Billion.

Any ideas what it cost to make that temp stadium (AKA Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium)?

Would love to see the numbers on if KU should've/could've? built something similar in Lawrence or one of their local hay fields, especially if construction timeline pushes into the 2025 season.

I'm sure Guff did his due diligence since this is such a well planned project and he was once at Northwestern to throw out some feelers. Just feel like if the numbers are even remotely close, it would greatly benefit the area and gameday atmosphere in town.

You act like only five days into construction, they're [jayhawks] already a month behind schedule.

For me, it's the incredible amount of pressure they're putting on this season. They need another $50 mil just to finish phase 1, and they need this season to be successful in order to raise the money. Much of the success of this season will depend on their starting QB staying healthy, which he has never been able to do.

Hi, Royal Purple Oil. I am not acting like anything and maybe I rambled in my post.

I was mostly saying if it was a possibility to do for this season, and then they'd also have it available for next year if construction gets delayed, even with all the VE taking place.

That was a Tropic Thunder movie reference I said in jest.

I think we all know that this was an overly ambitious project for KU that, while it needed to happen, they weren't ready to take it on just yet. That's why you keep seeing all these shortfalls and delays pop up. However, the possibility of losing the only coach that's brought them success in a generation forced their hand.

Ultimately, they're going to get the stadium built. When it gets fully completed is anyone's guess, but it'll be miles ahead of the disaster they had before. However, I think the final product is going to look a lot more like Baylor's toilet bowl, where you start seeing corners cut and money saved, vs what OSU, K-State, or even Tech has. OSU might not be the best example of an end product, as you can still tell you're in an old ass stadium. However, you can also clearly see that significant money has been spent on the facility as well.

I agree, it will be a nice little stadium similar to the solid new stades that Colorado St, UAB, and San Diego State have built.

Setting aside the (kinda) loller part to even have to do this in terms of not having a stadium for two years and resorting to this. It is legitimately no small feat to create a temporary facility like this and have it be "good". It is so hard to put something like this together in not a lot of time and make it be functional for FBS level football. Let alone the cost, I know we can poke more fun a ku cause of it but it ain't cheap either to make a facility that is just going to be a thing for two years only while you are also making a new stadium that is like a half billion dollars. Those crazy sons of bitches did it.

I don't think it will be nice but after seeing the olympics scaffolding monstrosities I'm kind of surprised it wasn't a little bigger.

That's fair, I just wonder if for the olympics they are far more temporary (couple of weeks, really like 4 total between Olympics and paralympics in terms of use) for something that needs to be used for around for 2 years. Like not saying that even for those couple short weeks it wasn't "built" for weeks before but so much of the cost in these things is how long you rent the structure, in addition to how big it is.

FWIW those Olympic stadiums will all definitely get more use even if the total duration is less and the weather is better. I almost wonder if Northwestern could take it down after the season and rebuild it again next year

Which I think both again kinda speak to NW's smaller size. I am only basing this on my own site's scaffolding costs but like the biggest pain points are 1) having to do it (can we use an AWP instead), 2) duration (how long do you need it) and 3) size, and all those feed into the labor of even doing it. I think for the olympics they thought it's rather short time and we get a lot of use in that small time so we can afford to recoup costs to make it bigger, we already going to have the labor there to build and tear it down too. Where NW is like, we need this for two years, it isn't getting used but 6-7 times a year (or due to Wrigley less, but maybe they can do soccer there too?), we probably can't do Soldier Field's too cause it already is a crap field when only the bears play on it, and we can fill Wrigley on like 2 games a year, sure let's go with a smaller stadium for the time being. I think this idea of tearing it down only to rebuild it not even 8 months later is also at play cause like, what if someone else wants to rent those stands in the interim and then you're SOL, or paying a premium in a potential bidding war. My only other guess too is looking at it on google earth, there are only so many directions you can go, it's probably fairly impossible to make it that much bigger. Only my guesses on that.

They are sharing the space with two other fall sports, so there's not much reason to tear it down, unless they're worried about the structural integrity surviving the Lake Michigan winter.

Yeah, considering they're still not finished putting it together, according to Stuart Mandel.

Here's a video they put out today that shows they're still working on a couple of things.

Also I missed these when I posted photos a couple of weeks ago.

The most fantastic lightning rods I've ever seen.

"THREE DAYS LATER.–We are all about worn out. For four-and-twenty hours our bristling premises were the talk and wonder of the town. The theaters languished, for their happiest scenic inventions were tame and commonplace compared with my lightning-rods. Our street was blocked night and day with spectators, and among them were many who came from the country to see. It was a blessed relief on the second day when a thunderstorm came up and the lightning began to “go for” my house, as the historian Josephus quaintly phrases it. It cleared the galleries, so to speak. In five minutes there was not a spectator within half a mile of my place; but all the high houses about that distance away were full, windows, roof, and all. And well they might be, for all the falling stars and Fourth-of-July fireworks of a generation, put together and rained down simultaneously out of heaven in one brilliant shower upon one helpless roof, would not have any advantage of the pyrotechnic display that was making my house so magnificently conspicuous in the general gloom of the storm.

By actual count, the lightning struck at my establishment seven hundred and sixty-four times in forty minutes, but tripped on one of those faithful rods every time, and slid down the spiral-twist and shot into the earth before it probably had time to be surprised at the way the thing was done. And through all that bombardment only one patch of slates was ripped up, and that was because, for a single instant, the rods in the vicinity were transporting all the lightning they could possibly accommodate. Well, nothing was ever seen like it since the world began....

....TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.–Parties having need of three thousand two hundred and eleven feet of best quality zinc-plated spiral-twist lightning-rod stuff, and sixteen hundred and thirty-one silver-tipped points, all in tolerable repair (and, although much worn by use, still equal to any ordinary emergency), can hear of bargains by addressing the publisher."

Anyone in the know of why we never installed ribbon boards on the West Stadium Center?

Seeing these light shows with drones etc. from other teams is making me feel insecure lol.  I rough ridin' hate Nebraska but the video of their light show before the 4th quarter that is currently going around X made me jealous.
