If the businesses think it's positive, then who cares. It's not like it's a major traffic route, and they do it on weekends already.

The city shouldn't give away public assets like this if you ask me. Once we give it away, it's gone forever. It also reduces walkability in a walkable dense neighborhood.

The neighborhoods have been given no input into this decision. Westport is more than just the businesses.

You can still walk on the street, unless you think they are going to charge cover at 3pm on Thursday

Lib...that's the thing.  When you give the ROW to the business association, they can easily do that w/o the city having any business saying no.

This solves nothing.  If you don't mind them blocking the streets on weekends (I'm not a fan of this) then why not continue with how the practice works now, they apply for festival license and it goes through city approvals.

you are correct.  I'm talking realities though...once a city gives this away, it doesn't come back.

Ideally the city just gives permanent or yearly status and they close the street all the time.

What does vacate the intersection even mean?

That's a better solution than the city giving it away.  This is the wrong way to fix the Westport problems.  Ultimately I guess I don't care as I don't visit westport often anymore but this is bad public policy and doesn't fix any problems. (Theory time) This is westport whining to the city that they want this because "P&L is taking our business" and they are blaming the city for that....so this is a way for the city to shut them up .

this gives an overview of the "agreement"...basically the city doesn't control from 40th Street south Penn to archibald and on westport from Mill St to Broadway.  They can block off and charge a cover to the area (control all access to streets and sidewalks) as described in the list of events and whenever they want providing a week of notice to the city.

Understood.  Also no shortage of home owners and renters.  With more on the way.  With this, anybody not wanting to pay a cover or under 21 can't use those businesses when westport decides they want to shut down the streets.

Giving public streets / sidewalks to private entities is kind of a difference.

I think giving the street away is a bit too far, but I'm totally for it being a pedestrian only area. I can't even remember the last time I drove thru that intersection. It's a clusterfuck
