Help Steve Dave Build A House (NOW HELP HIM TAKE CARE OF IT)
« Reply #2250 on: July 08, 2023, 12:01:58 PM »
I think we’re going to put a mini-split in the garage.
I’ve been on the fence about this one as well
We just ran 220V & Mrs. Hamburg got a lathe. We have an oversized 3 car garage & we’re reorganizing the 3rd bay around the lathe. I’m pretty excited about the mini-split.
Similar situation.  I have a 2 car garage with an expanded bay in one side (10’x15’).  I use it as my wfh setup + garagre related work bench.  The garage is a pretty nice temp until it gets into the 90’s then it sucks.  This seems like the best solution i’ve been presented.  I have access to mobile ac unit, but I don’t want to lose any floor space.

I would prefer to put my workspace in the basement.  But it’s unfinished and i just dumped 40k on new windows in the entire house.  So that’s on hold while we replenish savings

I have no idea when you’re supposed to get new windows. I have hard time believing it’s just insulation. That’s a lot of gas/electricity bills being 20% lower to get a ROI back of $25k-$40k.

Do your old windows still work? If so you don’t need new ones.

Unless you have single pane energy hogs, SD is right as usual.

Best bang for your buck is to pop the trim and seal the window with non expanding foam. That's where the energy loss is for most modern windows (built since 1980s).

Yeah, ours were about 35 years old, failing, and were starting to fall apart.  We had 1 or 2 that might have been salvageable, but at the end of the day all were replaced.

How many windows did you get replaced for the 40k?

18  But of course, nothing was remotely standard.

Some had to be tempered because they are so close to the floor.

And then we did triple pane on all windows facing west (6 of them).  We have 2 bedrooms and an office that gets no shade once the sun is at its highest until sunset.  So those rooms have the highest range of temperatures compared to the rest of the house.

Then our master has a large single opening that houses 3 windows.  We could have gone a cheaper route saving us some decent money, but the interior designer of the house veto’d the look.

We got a significantly lower quote from window world, but felt better about the windows we got from this other company.

I'm considering buying a new house.  It has a septic tank.  I've never lived in a house with a septic tank but I've been to houses with them and usually there is a trash can by the toilet for your tp to go. So, only poo and pee can go in, no TP? That seems gross.

I grew up with a septic and currently have a septic.  You can def flush your TP.  Only difference is it has to be emptied every 5 years or so depending on how many people are in your household.

Yeah my house growing up was septic and it was no big deal really. Sometimes the downhill drainage would smell a little poopy after heavy rains

The cat ranch has a septic tank and I was there about 4 years when it was emptied(has not been emptied since). Basically they took a giant vacuum in there, sucked all that crap up, added some chemicals(not sure, that's what my dad said)? Then the truck went and sprayed it in all in the pasture to disperse it.

No idea if this was just some cat ranch crap or if that's what they normally do with septic tanks on farms. If you only have a couple of acres on that place I'm guessing they take it back somewhere to dispose of it.

i've always heard of trash can toilet paper as a pipe diameter issue.

I've been on an island or two where the proprietors of our accommodations insisted on it. Granted, these were small islands. It will really test the bond between you and your s/o.

Even on larger islands, it's typical for double-ply TP to be prohibited.
