the guy at home depot 15 minutes ago was selling me on this one:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-40-Volt-Lithium-ion-Cordless-String-Trimmer-Edger-RY40210A/203763425?N=5yc1vZbx8iZ1awZ1z0ylm1

first mistake was asking someone's opinion at Home Despot.

I didn't ask, he strolled up and gave it. I am very open to better options. POST THEM ITT!

I bought a black and decker battery one, Lithium ion.  I think I got 18V and wished I had gotten the next higher voltage one.  Takes a few seconds to spool up.

I bought this one http://www.homedepot.com/p/BLACK-DECKER-40-Volt-Electric-Cordless-Straight-Shaft-String-Trimmer-LST136/203072998.  It has worked like new for two years now.  CNSWife does all the trimming.  She loves that stuff and hasn't reported any problems.  The battery give us almost two full trims before needing charging.  We are buying the trimmer for the same battery this summer.

I think it's this one.  It does both edge and trim and rotates and has one of those wheels which is nice.  Just kinda weak motor is all.  Also 1 battery is good for about 0.8 trims.

No matter what string trimmer you buy, get this instead of using string:  http://www.lowes.com/pd_72755-65481-49M6313K953_0__?productId=3197551

I've got this one in the 24v. Good trimmer. Can't go wrong with more volts for only 10 bucks.

SD, I had a lawn mowing business in High School so I'm pretty much an expert! I agree with everything EMO and some of this overlaps but

1. Mow your lawn in different directions every week.

2. When you get tired of north/south east/west and are ready for diagonal do this.
          A. Make 2 laps around the outside. Now you have room to turn your mower around.
          B. Start in the middle at a 45 degree angle, finish one half then do the other half.
          C. Your lawn will look "Kaufman Stadium" awesome

3. Definitely mow shirtless, the neighbors wife's will love it (Old ladies used to tip me and I'm sure its because I was shirtless)

4. Splurge on a nice weedeater. You can get one with different attachments that turn it into an edger.

5. Bag your yard in the spring and fall, mulch it during the summer when its hot as balls. The mulch helps to trap the moisture and keep your grass looking studly.

6. Leafblowers are the crap. Unless you are planning on paying the neighborhood kids to rake leaves I would get one.

7. If your green thumb ever comes back think about putting a compost pile in your backyard somewhere. Grass clippings/Leaves can go there and you will have super awesome soil to plant stuff your veggies in.

8. The only winterizing I have ever done for a mower is to make sure it has no gas in it over the winter. You may need to sharpen the blade like once every 3 years but other than that don't worry about it unless you notice the blade is sucking.

First mowing each year is the lowest you cut it. Mow at 3". Never cut more than 1/3 rd of the height of the grass.

Never cut more than 1/3 rd of the height of the grass.

because i hate mowing, i cut more like 1/2 to 2/3 at a time.  is this going to kill my fescue?  i figured it might help the clover win, or hurt the bermuda more than the fescue.  but both are just rationalizations for not mowing so much.

stresses the turf more. Also allows for more weeds to grow...ESPECIALLY YOUR PESKY BERMUDA!
