I cook a lot.  Getting a Viking is Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) unless you are filthy rich and have nothing else to do with $10k.  You can get a really nice gas residential stove that will heat up pretty much any kind of nacho you want for like $1200-$1500.

It's a status symbol/big selling point for resale

No, it's dumb.

that does not contradict what I said, numbnuts.

Over buying on stove to bigtime ppl with said stove is a pretty dumb idea.  Also, spending $10k on a stove for resale isn't smart either.  You won't get that $10k back in your appraised value or sale price.  If your house is so shitty that the stove is what it takes just to sell the house, you def need to spend $10k elsewhere.

See?  It's dumb.

google shopping only shows me one when I searched it and it was $7,200.  The few NFM had on the floor last spring when I bought my range were both over $10k.  One was crazy high at something like $15k but it was a double oven one, iirc.

Their website shows that as the lowest cost one they make.  The MSRP on similar other models to the one you posted is $5,900-$9,300.

still, here's kind of what I'm talking about - the name "Viking" is a big deal to a lot of folks:

if you will never turn on a gas fireplace would you still spend the money on one that looks elite or just have them slap some black heatilator up there?

we were quoted this SOB but it's like $2,500 more than a basic square job.

why would anybody have a problem with ducts going through bar joists?

My thought exactly? Also, you can pass through beams as long as you reinforce the web. There are restrictions though...as there are with anything
Ahh yes.......typical ME thought process:
"I want my ductwork to go here.  Let the SE or GC figure out how to build the building around it and we can just pass any added cost on to the owner."

i'm an SE and have no problem with ducts going through bar joists. if you want to go through a wide flange or something, go ahead go back to the drawing board tho
Nobody has a problem with running duct through bar joist as long as the web openings are large enough to accomodate the duct size.  The problem arises when the ME fails to verify the opening sizes or they look at the standard opening for the joist size, see that it will work but then run the duct close enough to the bearing end that the openings have gotten smaller.  It then seems to fall on the GC and/or MC to come up with a solution.

Engineers and architects should have a mandatory of 5 years working in the field so they can see how stupid all of them are.

Go with a nice set of Electrolux appliances if you really want to wow people. I've read very good reviews on them as well as my parents have a complete kitchen of Electrolux appliances. What kind of finish are you thinking about getting?

I would agree with the Viking folks as they are kickass. I'm planning on putting one in when I finish my kitchen remodel.

Don't buy Fridgidaire unless you're poor SD. If you're at that range of price point, just go grab some appliances off of craigslist or your local (crappy) Sears*.

*Disclaimer: Sears has some decent appliances if you weed through all the crap first.

I agree with the field experience aspect. I worked in the construction field for years before I started practicing engineering in the office. Has definitely helped me out immensely.

To say that all engineers are stupid though, is an incorrect blanket statement.

Induction cooktop is the only acceptable alternative to gas.
