As someone new to baseball, is it possible for a closer to become a consistent starter or whatever they're called? I know Matthys started out last game but could it be a regular thing? And if it is is that common?

BITB advocates for this all the time.

Last year Nate Williams was our closer.  This year he was bumped up to a weekend starter before moving back to the pen.

He's the only other example I can think of where Brad Hill has turned a closer into a starter.

James Allen and Evan Marshall all stayed in the pen to my knowledge.

Wichita State had a stud freshman and sophomore closer who moved into the rotation and was their best starter.  You gotta figure Matthys has probably been a starter for most of his life so I don't think moving hin at this point would be a problem.

At the college level it is really concievable to make the switch, it gets a little harder as older arms get more used to throwing max effort for a short period...I saw in his 1st summer league appearance, Matthys started & went 5 innings. Often the summer league coaches will work with the players college coaches to make sure players are working on things the college wants them to be working on, so that could be a sign that HCBH is looking at making the conversion to SP  :dunno:

Glens Falls Golden Eagles
Future sophomore Jake Matthys allowed an unearned in five innings during a start on Sunday (article was posted on 6-24)… The right-hander took a no decision after allowing only one hit with a walk and seven strikeouts

Would take Matthys as a starter. We lacked a really good starting pitcher last year and it would be nice to have a go to starter.

Matthys will be of great value to the pitching staff whatever his role. My concern for next season is that nobody in the rotation can really throw heat.

Prolly luked but whatever. Interesting article on where the Cats are playing this summer. Kivett will be using wood bats in the Cap Cod league, which is damn impressive.

Hopefully, he doesn't fall in love with a rich guy's daughter and sign with the Phillies.

it'll probably happen, but I'd like to see the assistant coach (especially hitting coach) receive a sizable raise.

The only Batcat at the Major league level got the start tonight against the Pirates.

Carlos Torres has been dominating out of the pen since he's been called up, and getz a spot start tonight.

His era is 0.44

So far so good through 3 innings.

Kivett was named to another All American team.  Destroyed the finest league of college ballplayers.  Just another day in Titletown.
