Every time I have to travel to the west coast, I spend the whole time counting down the hours until I get to leave the west coast.

beems, you're not being very ad astra here.

Kansas is a great place to be from... not a great place to be.
that's a pretty horrible thing to say.

Well, it's the truth.  I assume you have never lived anywhere other than Kansas, right?  I'm not saying it's a horrible place to be.  Just not great.
No it's not the truth.  Kansas is a terrific place to live.  Sorry it doesn't have a killer alt music scene or a mountain or whatever it is that makes the Pacific Northwest so damn attractive.

I don't currently live in Kansas, fwiw.

Don't get all butthurt about it, man.

K-State is the original FloodAggie?  :horrorsurprise:

http://ks.water.usgs.gov/waterwatch/flood/fld51.photos.html

yeah, after that happened a network of levees and reservoirs was constructed throughout Kansas to prevent anything like it from happening again. seems iowa could learn a thing or two here.

WhereTF are you going on the "west coast"?  Apparently you're doing it wrong.

west coast (at least the southern west coast) is overrated.

The problem is that if a dam breaks, everything beneath it is beyond screwed. I guess its a risk you take. I'd just prefer ISU built a new arena outside of the floodplain and we don't have this conversation. Mother nature will always win in the end, and water will always go to the lowest point.

Why haven't the flood aggies retreated to their own board yet. It's hard enough to care about them the few days before the game, but after it's over...yawn

Well crap, why even put a roof over your head?  Mother nature's just gonna win out on that one someday.

Almost all towns in the plains states at one point or another suffered from flooding, most have at some point taken steps to prevent floods in the future with water management and engineering projects.   Some, however, just choose to buy waders and pretend they don't mind the smell of mildew.

All major rivers in Iowa do have reservoirs. The problem in Ames is that its a small creek with no major elevation change to allow the construction of a reservoir.

The reason I posted the pic is because I can fall asleep tonight knowing Kansans are flood experts, and deem us "FloodAggie" based upon experience and expertise, rather than meaningless banter. Its good to know they wouldn't risk an entire town by holding up a bunch of water directly above a town along a fault line or anything stupid like that.

The inaccuracy in that article lies in the fact that there is the Skunk River (lets all pause for 2 seconds to laugh at the name) and Squaw Creek (which flooded Hilton and Jack Trice). The reservoir built north of Ames would have been built on the Skunk River, not Squaw Creek. Damming of the Missouri River in the Dakotas caused massive flooding in Iowa and Missouri because water was not released early enough.

The final line of the article:

However, he admits this is a "pure guess."
