The trick is to be able to discuss incendiary topics like politics and religion and not get bent out of shape with people who have different views. Makes living a lot easier. I mentioned it somewhere else before but I regularly hang out with a guy on Tim Kaine's staff. He is a cool guy that I enjoy being friends with.
