a. they weren't charged with poaching. b. poaching a deer or two is usually not even jail, just a fine. c. these oregon ranchers may or may not have done some bad crap (at least one has been accused/convicted of worse than killing a deer without a permit). that's entirely irrelevant to whether it's just to jail them for burning rangeland.

the "they set the fire to cover up poaching" thing doesn't even make any sense. i could kill about five million deer on blm land and there would a 0.0% chance of anyone ever catching me. about the only way you could possibly get caught is if you started a giant fire to mark the spot.

the prosecutor should be embarrassed he/she couldn't come up with something better than that.
