This "show your thinking" crap is easily the dumbest part of common core. My second grader told me "dad, these questions are a waste of time. I already got the answer right." It was a proud moment.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.

Huh weird, I took math long before common core existed and I had to show my work on math problems. I thought this was standard practice, good to get confirmation that Garden City is a trendsetter

Common core math is great - I wish I had learned that way. Anyone who has taken a college math class knows you're expected to "show your thinking", plus the variety of solving methods common core teaches makes it more likely that your child will find a particular method that works better for him/her than the traditional algorithm methods most of us learned, setting them up for success down the road.

In all seriousness, K-S-U, I think you should put politics aside and genuinely try to learn more about the philosophy behind the multiple solving methods used in common core.

The pussification involved with common core is by parents not wanting to spend 10 seconds googling the terminology or method used in their kids homework.  I mean, basically everyone agrees we need to do something to make our kids more adept at math, yet parents keep getting mad because they can't help their kid with their homework and "why can't they just learn it the way I did, it worked for me", yet even American adults are shown to be behind other countries on math knowledge.

Keep doing the same thing and expect better results.

For some kids, that might be helpful. It is wasting my kid's time. He can show his work when gets to algebra, just like we did.

Part of problems like this is the student learning how to provide the information wanted and how it's wanted.  That's a pretty common theme in life, not just in Bobby ' s dimes.  It's probably  good for kids to understand that early.

Where the hell did you go to school, this may explain quite a bit with you. My 1st grader has to show her work when doing math.

That's a 50/50 question, the kid doesn't want to show his work because he guessed

evidently, my second grader is also smarter than some of the tards on this board. In the time it takes him to "show" his reasoning for answering such simple problems, he could just as easily solve a couple more problems.

I didn't need to show work until we got to rearranging equations in algebra and it worked just fine.

How much time does it take your second grader to show "4*10=40 and 30*1=30"?
