Arch students re-designed Ahearn back in the late 1970's early 1980's . . . turned the court to go East-West, would have looked like Hinkle Fieldhouse, but obviously would have required indoor track and probably volleyball to move to their own venues.   Nobody spent that kind of money to renovate athletic venues back then, they either slapped band aids on them, or just built new ones, that was the mindset.

My beef with Bramlage has always been that they didn't build the building that was promised, they slashed and instead of waiting awhile and getting more money to build what they promised.   Of course they slashed and cut while only letting out a nominal amount of information, and it wasn't until the project was significantly done that people really realized that it wasn't going to be what they said it would be.  The same amount of money could have done a significant renovation to Ahearn.

Pro-tip: ahearn is an old, run down piece of crap. I know it had a cool atmosphere for basketball in 1982, but literally it's only advantage over the fOOD is that it is located on campus, but WGAF?

Thats a big advantage.  I wish we would tear Ahearn down and build a new OOD there.

Advantage for what? It's not like the OOD is an hour off campus.

Atmosphere, proximity to hotels/aggieville, turnout when we suck, people walking to games when the weather sucks.  I think it would bring more potential students in because when they are younger and come for games, they can get a familiar with campus as well (would be a bigger deal for football).  On campus facilities are incredible, imo

Sorry if it has been discussed before, but what was cut?

Meh. Sure, it'd be better to have an on-campus facility, but I think the advantages are minimal at the end of the day to a facility just barely off campus. I don't think student turnout would be affected in the slightest, imo.

The Southeast Entrance of Bramlage is 194 feet from the North Side of the Jardine Apartments . . . I'd call that on campus.

It's really time to focus on Bramlage, the BTF is a really nice addition, time to push out the West Side and put in a really nice entrance/concourse area over there, and then modernize the concourse around the whole arena.   If they built new athletic offices on the West side, they could take the old offices and put in even more fan amenities.

Pancake . . . Bramlage was supposed to be round, with a cut limestone exterior and have more seats.

All of this.  Pageantry, student connectivity, walking distances to the Greek houses and dorms, proximity to Aggieiville.

College sports are meant to be played in venues on campus.  The only exceptions are football stadiums, even then, the best environments I have seen are on campus as well.  Auburn is amazing.  Kyle Field.  Death Valley Clemson. Husky Stadium.  Colorado was extremely cool with its proximity to Pearl Street and Downtown.

Every reason collegiate sports venues should be on campus are the same reasons baseball should always be played downtown.

Bramlage was and is a total planning mishap.  We've turned it into an ok place over the years, but it's mostly a big, dumb, lifeless, nondescript box that sits in a massive sea of asphalt parking accross from a bunch of undeveloped agriculture pastures, disconnected from the heart of campus. There's no sense of place or Gameday excitement or identity.  All that said, we're never going back, so all we can do it try to make it better at this stage.

Ah, yes.....i do remember that it was supposed to have way more seats.  I wish there were some original renderings still floating around to look at.

There are some.  Like Dax said, it was originally a radial footprint and a true radial bowl.  It was also supposed to be 16,000+ to qualify for NCAA regional events.

Not long ago there was a rendering on here that showed kind of a merged OOD and Ahern...anyone remember where that was? It was awesome. I'd donate to something like that. Not to ribbon boards.

Then making it octogonal is what I'd call "unintentional gold."

The inside looks better than the outside. The outside looks like...well, two disparate buildings fused together.

I guess all you have to do is imagine the whole Bramlage covered in Ahearn's limestone facade. Really, I hope when/if they do upgrade Bramlage that they really consider at leas adding a pitched roof the the place. Probably would be too expensive fwiw but to me old barn pitched roofs really improve the sound holding of a gym. The flat roof of Bramlage and the doors to the concourse set the way they are really allow for the sound to dissipate more than it should.

Bramlage needs expanded/upgraded concourses and improved concessions BR amenities very badly.

I don't really get the importance of the led ribbon. Seems frivolous and personally do not like.

It sucks when sun is shining on an arena's bball court. Was thinking about this when watching KU yesterday.
