Dive Bars
« on: January 24, 2013, 10:25:01 AM »
What is your favorite dive bar?  How often do you stop in and what kind of cheap booze deals do they have?  While in college it was The Lou for my group of buddies, stop in for a can of Busch Light on a Tuesday night and do a little people watching.

My favorites in KC include the following

Shooters is our most frequented since it's closest to home. $12 towers all the time & karaoke Thursdays http://www.theweeklydive.com/2008/09/shooters-kansas-city-mo.html
Chip Shot http://chipshotkc.tripod.com/ Great pork tenderloin sandwhich
Zoo Bar (cash only)

Mods move if there is another thread but I couldnt find one.

Not a fan.

Prefer nice places that have nice TV's and good beer or other drinks.

Side story: had an OSU fan working in my office about 7yrs ago.  He was going to a concert near my home town and asked what the best bar would be to prepak at.  I gave him the absolute worst bar in that area that was super shitty, dirty, and disgusting.  The next day I expected some butthurt from him but instead he wouldn't shut up about how awesome the bar was.  Pfft.

I'm pretty sure that if a bar is in aggieville it's disqualified from being a dive.  :dunno:

There are lots of so-called "dive bars" here but they still all charge $5 for a beer.

Topeka:  Seabrook Tavern now known as Speck's.

Lawrence:  Harbor Lights (Was Shanego before it closed/moved or whatever).

KC:  Key Hole Tavern

I used to go to the 20's club in the Brookwood shopping center (Topeka) every once in a while. A stranger pulled a gun on me one night because I wouldn't let him crash at my place. I've never been back.

Not sure there is a set standard but ones that comes to mind:
Fairly Small
Has regulars
Not much of a staff (1 or 2 bartenders and maybe a waitress if they serve food)
Cheap booze
Would not stick out wearing sweats/shorts

Guys, if you want someplace that is super informal and much less expensive than other places, have friends over to your home.

I loved going to the old (original?) Dutch Goose in Topeka when visiting our state's capital, is it gone?

I always throw up on outside bushes and flowers.  Good fertilizer.

Yup. The Goose is still there featuring Caitlin, the drunkest waitress/bartender in Topeka.  There's another place called The Back Door right off 6th and MacVicar that I've been to a few times but it's even worse than a dive bar.  Like, bad bartenders and disgusting bathrooms.  But the people inside are still friendly.

No people watching, random conversations with regulars, pool and darts, karoake, juke box, fillies, etc.  Having friends over isn't much different than a normal tuesday night watching some tv.

Is that the one across from the newish kwik shop? Weird place, lots of nasty bras hanging from their ceiling fans, which are of course covered in dust.

the opposite is true. every bar in aggieville is a dive.

the best dive bar in KC is DB Coopers, by a long shot.  not anything close, except maybe Caddyshack.  and their gourmet pizza kind of prevents them from being a dive.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.
