Though it is assholish and wrong imo, I think a business owner or someone renting out a house should have the right to discriminate for any reason.
Yep, don't let the blacks eat in your restaurant.

Bump, in case this got missed.

i think stormnut has a point. You can't just legislate away hate. Bigots gonna bigot. That said, I don't really care if there is a law in place for it or not.

The changes brought by civil rights movements have been overwhelmingly positive for minorities and women.  You can't immediately legislate away hate, but by protecting some groups you can certainly improve their treatment over time.

It was true in the 60's and was need because you had intrenched, irrational hate. If you asked normal, joe blow Christian if they "Hate" gays, they will truly tell you no and mean it. Back during the Civil Right days of the 60's this was just not true.

Another way to look at it is this. Has mistreatment and out right discrimination of people that are gay risen to the level of what we saw after then end of slavery? There is a very vocal minority of people out there that level hate  on people that are gay to that of people of other races but it is no were near the wide spread culturally intrenched as it was in the south.

I think if you were to ask Christian, Joe Montgomery Kansan if he would ever hire a gay person or be comfortable renting an apartment to him, you would be surprised by the number of people who say no.

Though it is assholish and wrong imo, I think a business owner or someone renting out a house should have the right to discriminate for any reason.

Yep, don't let the blacks eat in your restaurant.

Good luck with that business.  I'm sure someone who doesn't discriminate will be taking over the lease soon enough and reaping profits in the wake of your folly.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

I find it frighteningly awful that an anti-discrimination law was voted down.

People can try to spin this however they want, but at the end of the day, Salina voted for discrimination.

Which may be as frightening as the people of Wichita believing that fluoride is mind control.

Well, it's kind of what will happen with young educated people in places like Hutchinson and Salina. And the state of Kansas in general, really.

Why do Salinans (Salinians? Salinese?) want landlords to be able to kick someone out of their house because they are rough ridin' someone of the same sex?  Or a boss be able to fire a guy because he goes home to his boyfriend at night? It's rough ridin' wrong, and there should be a law against it.

Yeah, I understand people don't want government to control them or whatever, but you are literally Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) if you don't agree with 8man's post.

A lot of things are wrong.  Doesn't mean they should all be written into legislature.
Name some of them.

Drug use, adultery, bigoted hate, prostitution, price gouging (not in times of emergency)

I should have clarified.  These are things that certain people think are wrong.  I don't think that drug use is wrong.  I think that prostitution is wrong.  I also think that discrimination based on race, religion, etc. is wrong.

[...]I think that prostitution is wrong. [...]

Agreements between consenting adults, IMO, aren't wrong. Human trafficking is impossible to separate from it though, and that in unquestionably wrong.  Anyway, this is way off topic.

Sorry, but denying someone drugs and hookers is not denying a basic human right.

What you or I believe is wrong isn't really important.  I agree.  I was just answering someone else's question.

What basic human right?  The voluntary exchange of goods and services?  Those exchanges are mutual agreements, if one party doesn't agree to do business, I would say that forcing them to do so is violating their human right.

I would also say that any national, state, city, or county institution should be 100 percent accountable to strict anti-discrimination laws.  If Scott Li down at the Burrito Village restaurant down the street only wants to hire black people to work in his restaurant and only sell the burritos to gay white dudes then let him go ahead and see how that works out.

And like I said, good luck getting educated folks to move to Salina or Hutch.

apparently we've come so far since the civil rights act of 1964 that people have forgotten how important it was.  that's something I guess.

Just more proof that doctors in general are bad people. Did they want to be able to fire their employees for being gay or did they want to reserve the right to refuse treatment for homosexuals? Probably both.
