I told this story to a 60 year old, female co-worker in the elevator.  She just looked at me and said "How ugly is he that he's a big FB player at ND, but has to resort to calling a person he talks to on the internet his 'girlfriend'?" 

I almost hope he did fall for a hoax, because there's nothing funnier than an ND football player went on TV crying, thinking his fake internet girlfriend died when it really was a dude.
