Why is this guy even in the Heisman discussion??? He isn't anything special or done anything special.
Stats before tonight:
Total tackles: 69...good for 23rd in the nation. The national leader has 102.
Interceptions: 4.....tied for 6th. National leader has 7
Sacks: ZERO (has one tonight). National leader has 9.5
Passes broken up/defended: tied for 56th with 3/7. National leader has 13/15.
Forced fumbles: tied for 49th with 2 . National leader has 4
Fumble recoveries: tied for 17th with 2. National leader has 3.
He doesn't lead the nation in ANYTHING!!!!! What the eff???? Seriously, he's a dime a dozen linebacker. I don't get it. He's the Tyler Hansbrough for football. He tries really hard and plays for a national "power". That's it.

rough ridin' ridiculous for McCarron (Bama's QB) to be in the Heisman conversation. There isn't one game in his career that Alabama won but they would have lost had his backup been playing instead of him. Being important to your team's success ought to be a requirement for Heisman consideration.

Remembering Lennay Kekua, Before the Biggest Game of Manti Te'o's Life
All she wanted were white roses.
Lennay Kekua, the longtime girlfriend of Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o, passed away on September 11, 2012 after losing an extended battle with leukemia.
Prior to her passing, the 22-year-old Stanford student made her boyfriend promise two things: that he wouldn’t miss any football because of her condition, and that he give her a bouquet of white roses after she was gone.
The news of Kekua’s death was one of two staggering emotional blows the talented linebacker and Heisman Trophy candidate experienced this season, and both of them occurred on the exact same day in September within the span of a few hours.
Six hours after hearing his grandmother Annette Santiago had died of cancer, Te’o was hammered with the news that Kekua had also passed, knocking out yet another pillar of strength for an already emotionally devastated young man.
How It Began: Kekua met Te’o during her freshman year at Stanford, and within a year the two were steadily dating and vacationing together in Hawaii, where Te’o was raised. Both were unaware of Kekua’s condition until she was involved in a serious car accident her sophomore year, and testing during her recuperation period in the hospital spotted cancerous cells in her blood.
Devastated but not destroyed, Te’o drew on the strength and courage Kekua had shown in her final months and continued to play on through his period of mourning—keeping his final promise to her and taking the field against Michigan on September 22, the day of Kekua’s funeral. Te’o told reporters:
I knew when they were going to close the casket, It was during walkthrough. I remember I asked Coach [Bob] Diaco, "Coach, what time is it?" And he said "It’s 12:01."
That would be 9:01 California time, and nine o’clock is when they closed the casket for my girlfriend. So I had a moment then.
Te’o would go on to make eight tackles and snag two interceptions against the Wolverines in front of a crowd of Notre Dame fans, many of whom wore Hawaiian leis in support of their star player whose whole life had been turned upside down in the past week.
Te’o “sent” his two interceptions to Kekua, along with a single bouquet of white flowers he had placed on her grave.
“It was possibly the hardest thing I’ve had to do so far,” said Te’o. “To be able to operate and continue with my daily routine while knowing I just lost two women who I truly love.”
Te’o’s continued excellence at linebacker this season established him as a Heisman frontrunner and helped elevate Notre Dame’s football team to a 12-0 record and the No. 1 ranking in the land.
Tonight Te’o and the Fighting Irish look to extend that record to a perfect 13-0 and beat the Alabama Crimson Tide for the program’s first national title since 1988.
Win or lose, I think we all know Lennay Kekua will be smiling down on the Irish tonight, and Te’o will do his very best to honor her for his last time in the blue and gold of Notre Dame.

True, but ESPN harped on that story more than most. I really hope they don't try to paint Te'o and Notre Dame as victims in all of this. Notre Dame should be absolutely torched by all media outlets for keeping quiet when they found out Te'o's girlfriend wasn't real on December 26th. They let reporters run with that sob story up to the title game.
I can get why Notre Dame wouldn't say anything because they don't want distractions leading up to that game, but if that was the case they should have come clean within a day or two after they lost to Alabama. Looks like they were just going to sweep it under the rug and hope nobody found out.

She had someone call me and tell me she had died. I was torn to pieces, but luckily I had a friend who called the hospitals and the police and none of her story checked out. In fact her name was fake and she was using her friends identity.

I've had something similar happen to me. We weren't dating but I talked to her on the phone for a couple of weeks then one day she revealed she wasn't who she said she was. Given how devout Manti is I doubt he was looking for sex. He probably started talking to her and actually really liked her personality.

What I mean is that he had an online relationship with "someone", he began to care for her, but then the pranksters decided to kill this "someone". Then once the media found out about it, maybe Manti began to embellish a little on how close they were. In his mind, he wasn't lying, because he believed she was real, but maybe the "close friend" as she was first described, turned into his "girlfriend" because that is how the media wanted to portray her, and then it just became a runaway train.
I will reserve judgement for now, because I want to believe that Manti is the outstanding young man that inspired the Irish to have a special season. Until I hear more, I just can't believe he is guilty of anything more than being nieve and trusting. I must admit though, there is no way he comes out looking good. Either he was involved and is a con man or he is nieve and guilty of lying about certain details, such as meeting her and locking eyes with her at Stanford, but still a victim. He is in a no win situation unfortunately.
Incredibly bummed and confused. If this ends up shedding light that Manti is a fraud and a liar I won't know what to think anymore. I supported this dude so much. I just hope this isn't true...
Hopefully this doesn't effect our recruiting but that's probably wishful thinking. I've been really positive since the title game loss with the drama in the offseason, but if we take a hit here on this Manti story it will be hard to remove myself from the ledge.

1.) Te'o - definitely a liar but just a self promotionalist or closeted homosexual?
2.) Notre Dame - will never, EVER, admit they did anything wrong. The rapes on campus, sending a young man up a scissor lift to film practices when he knew he was going to die (then paying him and his family off to keep quiet), then let the Te'o girlfriend story persist after they knew 100% it was a lie during the NC game (obviously hoping it would go away); and/or
3.) the media - no one ever called the dead girl's family. SI ran a fawn piece over this "relationship" without even trying to call the dead girl's family, or even seeing if the girl ever existed.

The only thing that gets me is that if you date someone online you talk on the phone (as admitted by Manti) or you skype. At the very least you're sending pictures back and forth of dongs and hoots and stuff. How would Tuiasosopa pull that off? Or better question, could you date for that many months without questioning why you haven't done it yet?

At the beginning I couldn't see any way that he didn't know about it, but the tweet records from @justinrmegahan have flipped me. The interesting part will be piecing together how much he embellished things for attention and how much coverup was happening during the last month.
The only thing that gets me is that if you date someone online you talk on the phone (as admitted by Manti) or you skype. PI was for the University's benefit to protect there own interests. hindsight being 20/20 it was kind of unusual for ESPN or NBC to not trot out the dead girl's parents and/or friends to talk about how great of a guy Te'o was and how he helped her during her battle with cancer.

Yeah because you know journalists, they always respect peoples wishes and don't go too far. I mean they did interview first graders who saw their friends die but interviewing the parents of a football players dead girlfriend is off limits.
Not defending these "journalists" (:lol: at calling sports reporters journalists, but anyway...) BUT I can see how a reporter would honor that wish. You wouldn't want to hurt fake-dead-girlfriend's family by dragging it all up, and you need to maintain a good working relationship and access to Notre Dame and Te'o.

Sports Illustrated has released the full trascript of Pete Thamel’s interview with Manti Te’o. You can read Thamel’s interview, along with some more notes at Sports Illustrated.com. I have picked out a few select portions that I found interesting. From Sports Illustrated:
SI: How did you meet her?
TE’O: We met just, ummmm, just she knew my cousin. And kind of saw me there so. Just kind of regular.
SI: How long were you dating? I know that can be a complicated question.
TE’O: Oct. 15 was the official date. Of last year. I’ve known her for four years. So we’ve been friends.
SI: So you dated for about a year.
TE’O: Yeah.

TE’O: Her real name is actually Melelengei, but her friends couldn’t say that so they just called her Lennay.

SI: When did her dad pass?
TE’O: In October. She took that mantle for him.
SI: Does the family own a construction business?
TE’O: No. But they’re part of the whole administration, the higher-ups. Their family worked really hard and worked their way up. She’s very smart, very smart and very intellectual. She worked there but her main dream was to work with kids. She traveled all around. She taught at elementary schools. She flew to New Zealand to just work with kids. That’s what she loved to do, work with children.

There was an article that stated it was common knowledge on campus that he was banging hoes. While this does not disprove the gay theory, it makes it more unlikely than I previously thought.

Don't underestimate how weird people can be. It's very possible that during this long timeframe, Ronaiah could have easily filled in all of those details. I mean, there's already good evidence he had elaborate hoaxes going on with other people for no reason. This is how he gets his kicks.
I'm not saying that Manti didn't know about it, but Ronaiah is obviously a psycho and Manti is obviously dumb so it isn't that cut and dry.
EDIT: Manti is also a huge and possibly compulsive liar which makes the situation even more confusing. His lies would seemingly implicate him, but I'm just not sure he was smart enough to know when to stop lying even after knowing she was fake.

That was a good read. Here's a few paragraphs:
So why does this matter? Why did Manti Te'o's dead girlfriend matter at all? It mattered because in sports, that stuff matters a ton. And nowhere more than college football, where the short season and the fact that top teams almost never play top teams from other conferences means that we really have no idea which teams and which players are the best. So the sport revolves around hype, personal stories and hero worship. Go look at Manti Te'o's stats. He's indistinguishable for 20 other linebackers around the country. If he had the identical season for Arizona or Wisconsin, he probably wouldn't have been an All-American, let alone be considered for Heisman votes after truly dominant defenders like Ndamukong Suh couldn't win the award. But he played for Notre Dame, he talked about God a lot, and he had this tremendous back story. And that gave him hype, and that gave him all of the recognition, attention and rewards.
At this point, we don't yet know if Te'o completely manufactured the girlfriend, or if he was indeed duped at first into believing he was dating a girl who didn't exist. But what we know for sure is that he played it up for show. And we also know that at some point he figured it out, and his teammates figured it out, yet everybody kept pretending to the media that the girl was real. Te'o has already admitted to finding out that the girl was a fake by December 6th, yet two days later he talked about her to ESPN at the Heisman ceremony. And I'm betting that by the time this is all said and done that we'll know that he knew she was a fake at least a few months prior. Anonymous players have already said that they suspected something months ago.
So let's take Te'o's side of the story. Let's say that he really believed the girl was real, but around the time she was "dying" he finally figured out that she wasn't. Why did he continue to play it up? Why did he keep giving national interviews about it? Make everybody wear leis? Give team speeches about it? Because he knew it worked in his benefit. The dead girlfriend story was his ticket to being overrated, to winning more awards and more attention than he otherwise would have gotten for his play alone. The media gave him every incentive to lie.

Notre Dame took notice of Tudesco's tweets about the fund drive and sent a university videographer to shoot an interview with him. The video was posted on the Notre Dame athletics YouTube channel Tuesday.
Tudesco said he didn't believe Notre Dame was aware of the hoax when it promoted his fundraiser.
"It would surprise me that Notre Dame would want to promote this if they knew something like this was going on," Tudesco said.
However, Notre Dame officials said Wednesday that they became aware of the hoax on Dec. 26, nearly two weeks before the championship game. University spokesman Dennis Brown didn't immediately respond to a request seeking comment Thursday.

here's what most people seem to think is the real story:
te'o had a relationship online and on the phone with a woman. he liked her. she "died." he made it a bigger thing then it was. the media ate it up. he noticed that, and kept digging a hole and getting deeper and deeper.
as unbelievable as this story is, it's a fairly believable theory.

Nah I've seen it written he was with girls on Notre DAme all the time and it was widely known on campus that he lying about the girl from online being the "love of his life". I don't know if Notre Dame knew the girl was completely made up but they all knew he was lying about the nature of the relationship.
Notre Dame is pretty much dead to me apparently they kill people, rape people, and make up stories about fake girlfriends to try and stay relevant. If they would have known they were going to go undefeated they probably wouldn't have played up this story like they did.

People keep saying this, but I'm not sure it's true. The media's job is to report. When you have an anonymous source, sure you need to do a lot of fact checking to make sure that the facts are accurate. However, when you have a named source, like Manti Teo, all you are really doing is putting his story out there for everyone to see. Regardless of the facts, his lie is his story, and you shouldn't have to go out and verify that this girl really existed. The truth would, and did, come out and expose Te'o for the liar that his is. If there is any egg on the media's face, it is from them taking the liar's side in all of this and not crucifying him for being a lying bad person.

I heard an interview with the SI reporter that did the "Full Manti" cover story. He said that he did do a fact check and couldn't find a record of the wreck, of her attending Stanford, of her death, etc but went ahead with the story blaming deadlines.
He said he actually called the SID guy, or someone, at Stanford to get some info on her for the story and the guy said that he couldn't find her student info in the system and that he was surprised that a Stanford student was dating a high profile Notre Dame player without him having heard about it and how that usually doesn't happen since their campus isn't overly huge.
Just seems like a lot of flags to completely ignore. :dunno:

Im telling you guys, its a remake of a remake. Straight from IMBD:

Also, I think if Manti was gay and just admitted it and then went about his business like it was normal, it wouldnt even be that big of a deal. Everybody would forget about it after awhile. Also, I think if Manti was gay and just admitted it and then went about his business like it was normal, it wouldnt even be that big of a deal. Everybody would forget about it after awhile. I have never thought Tebow was all up in his face with his religion, it was the media that put it out there and Tebow played along.
Same problem would be with Te'o. If he did come out, he would become a pawn of the media "First openly gay football player" and it would be a big deal to the degree that Te'o would go along with it. Hell all this lying and stuff may be leading up to the big reveal and him becoming that face of Gay Football.

There are potential civil suits that could be brought if someone were bold enough. Mostly though, I just mean trouble with the media/public. People won't attack him as much if they see a troubled, gay man who was molested as a child. There are too many excuses and delicate social issues at play that it will go away for him fairly quickly
