MANHATTAN, KS -- Citing extensive minor and major violations occurring before and during his tenure as Kansas State University Athletic Director, John Currie today announced via e-mail that he had concluded his department had exhibited a continuous lack of institutional control while on probation that he was retroactively self-imposing dating back to 2005. As a result, Currie announced K-State would be self-imposing the so-called "death penalty" on its football and men's basketball programs, effective immediately. Under this sanction, neither program will compete in the 2013-2014 or 2014-2015 seasons.

The death penalty is recognized as the most severe penalty the NCAA can impose, involving season cancellation, loss of scholarships, and recruiting restrictions, and it has not been levied against a major school program since SMU in 1987 and 1988.
 
"It is our hope that by taking this decisive action, the NCAA will not impose more drastic sanctions," Currie's e-mail said. However, it is unclear what could constitute "more drastic sanctions," and attempts to contact Currie for clarification were not successful. He was reportedly seen leaving the athletic administrative offices of the University of Oklahoma earlier today. Former OU athletic director Joe Castiglione left that school 3 weeks ago to succeed the retiring Deloss Dodds at the University of Texas.

Unnamed sources in the Kansas State athletic department confirmed that the bulk of the violations were reported by an unidentified college basketball reporter with ESPN.com and an unidentified Portland-area KU athletics supporter.

The reaction of K-State fans at a local Dillons store was sorrowful but accepting. John Tuck, 58, said he would miss attending K-State football and basketball games, but would find plenty of enjoyment over the next couple of seasons in "rooting on the 'lady Cats' and whoever is playing KU." According to Tuck, "the important thing is making sure we're erring on the side of the harshest punishments under the strictest possible interpretation of even the most ambiguous or minor NCAA regulations at all times. It's nice to win, but not if you do it like all those teams that have been winning championships recently."

Because he doesn't make small timey money.  His base salary this year was $1.2MM.  He makes 80% what HCFM and oscar Weber each made this past season with about 10% of the expectations and pressure.  Leaves him pleanty of time to watch documentaries on big cats while still making over $1MM.

Listen, if Frank wants to spend every spring begging to get out of manhattan, let's show him the door now while we have a top-20 caliber team returning with which to recruit a replacement who wants to be here

I'm at juco nationals. Take everything with a grain of salt, but the coaching grapevine/rumor mill says that Martin is interested in entertaining potential offers and both South Carolina and Illinois have been mentioned with him.

Doesn't mean anything, but college coaches are talking. This place is the biggest rumor mill on the planet, though, and several things people say are just regurgitated and changed thoughts. Kind of like a big game of telephone with job rumors.

Makes for entertaining conversations though.

not surprising, but disappointing.  hope we can last till currie leaves.
