97% of everything I've ever known about Egypt I learned in this thread.

Knowledge can be a dangerous thing. Now a couple times a day I'll truthfully worry about how a country that has never given a damn about my problems is doing.

I haven't checked into any verified reports on it yet. Initial local reports said it was an escalating conflict between the Copt and local Islamists, which is a pretty regular occurrence.

Most common scenario:

Islamist: That Copt has a wife that wants to convert to Islam and he won't let her! (metanarrative: "the Other is stealing our women")  :curse:

Copt: :comeatme:

Islamists: Now we are many!  :shakesfist: :shakesfist: :shakesfist: :shakesfist:

Copt: Uh Oh. Time to hide in the local church!   :clac:

Islamists: Burn it!  :curse: :shakesfist: :curse: :shakesfist: :curse: :shakesfist: :curse: :shakesfist:

Copt: Police!  :runaway:

Police:  :don'tcare:

Copt's head:  :sdeek:

Original Islamist: Mohammad, dispose of that body.

Mohammad:  :flush:

But srsly they just left his body wrapped in chains, put it in the local cemetery, and placed the head on top. Nobody flushed a head or anything. I made that part up.

Haven't the MBs been systematically demolishing churches in Egypt?

that was a great job using emoticons to advance a narrative.

No. There's weird building rules in Egypt (maybe more details in a later post if there's interest, but it seems mostly boring to me). One of them is that churches can renovate, but not rebuild existing facilities or build on new sites. There's ways around it, and I may be oversimplifying it.

One of my Mormon friend's dad is an engineer, and he kept a list of all the absurd building code violations he saw in Egypt. I was nominally interested (some are pretty hilarious) but might still have it if the engineer nerds here are interested.

More Egyptian humor. The crowds are always chanting "irhal", which means "leave/go". This guy wants to "irhal" to the bathroom.

Here's an English language article from that guy that John Stewart likes so much. My wife insists his show is quite funny, but honestly even when I understand the language I rarely get the joke (maybe a point in favor of his subtlety?).

Anyway, link to his "what if" take on if Morsi wasn't ousted by the protests.

From a longer article published on the official MB. I mean, lol.

"Well known broadcaster Ahmed Mansour has said that Adly Mansour, head of the Supreme Constitutional Court and who has been appointed President of Egypt by the army, is considered to be a Seventh Day Adventist, which is a Jewish sect."

I listened to a spot on npr today about all the rapes happening during the protests. They said as many as 100 dudes would go after a few women and that usually there would be 5-10 paid thugs to help, they said it wasn't just a rape thing, but a political statement :sdeek:
No mention of concentric circles though

Also threw out a stat that 99% of Egyptian women have been sexually harassed :sdeek:
I'm purple down
