More than likely. This is overblown (the dude was traveling alone where you should never travel alone in a clearly identifiable vehicle and predictable schedule/route). But the optics are probably gonna force an evac, at least for a couple months.

This time, though, I'm gonna find a hotel with Fox Sports 1. Fool me, can't get fooled again.

The gov's election commission just released the symbols that candidates will have randomly assigned to them for the parliamentary elections (there's a bunch of voters that can't read, so law stipulates candidates be assigned recognizable symbols).

Aaaaaanyways, they're amazing. They're just rough ridin' rando clip art. There's a microwave, a fire truck, a corn cob, a kitchen knife, some headphones, etc. All super outdated and 8-bity. I'll post them once they're public.

There hasn't been a parliamentary election. The 2014 presidential election also required symbols, but there were just two candidates so they kinda got to choose their own.

Fun fact: the presidency has decreed about 420 laws give or take since 2013. This new parliament will have just 15 days to ratify all of them once they're officially in place. It's gonna be rough ridin' pandemonium.

In the office, we've been dividing them into blocs. Microwave, toaster, boom box, and printer look strong, but horse, rooster, scorpion and peacock are dangerous. And if the big rigs (fire truck, 18-wheeler, ambulance) organize...who knows? The real dark horse is probs the carrot-led veggie bloc.

I can't imagine having a job that needs done as fast as possible and not relying on microwave.

Welp, that was a pretty colossal clusterfuck. And I'm speaking in relative terms of a country that has colossally clusterfucked a lot of clusterfucks. This may go down as the worst. Just rough ridin' outrageous.

According to Egypt's state media, one of the tourists was an American citizen. According to the Mexican foreign ministry, the airstrikes against their picnic were carried out by Apaches. AND the Egyptian government demonstrably lied in trying to blame the tourist company.

Just an absolutely mind boggling clusterfuck from beginning to end.

Yeah. The military used Apaches to drop airstrikes on an afternoon picnic in a very popular tourist area (I and most in my office have been there), then opened fire with ground troops on those that ran, then lied about it, then got exposed by survivors.

Also, they just rough ridin' left them there. After they realized their mistake, they fled. The survivors were saved/treated by local residents. The bodies?  THEY ARE STILL rough ridin' LAYING OUT THERE IN THE DESERT.

Someone told a defense official today: "if my wife gives my daughter a nail gun and she blows off my toe, I'm not mad at my daughter."

I'm not an Egypt apologist by any stretch, but I try and defend the country when I can because I do like it. But holy eff this is a rough ridin' game changer.

operation repo. in broad daylight from gun range it should be pretty easy to tell the difference between tourists and terrorists.

And the ARROGANCE! Oh my rough ridin' God. It's bad enough that Sisi supporters are literally quoting trump on Mexicans, but the military spox told the press "you don't have the right to question this."

I mean, what the eff is that? Egypt passed a counterterrorism law last month that prohibits reporters (including foreign journos) from publishing news on CT ops that "contradicts" what the military itself says (the law also says the military/police basically have impunity in this regard, which has always been the case I guess it's nice that they formalized it and got it on paper). So the journos are in a weird position where they can't publish the testimony of survivors w/o risking prison/fines and Egyptians have to get their updates from Mexico's foreign ministry.

i read that the tourists went off the road a few miles in an attempt at a short-cut, because one of them was diabetic and needed to eat or something. is that the equivalent of jumping into the lion area at the zoo? i mean i'm just trying to imagine how they were mistaken for terrorists

Egypt dropped airstrikes on foreign tourists, blamed the tourists for being in a restricted area, got busted in that lie, and then just said "you don't have the right to question."
