I had a dream last night that bae and I were gonna fly to Tripoli on a whim and drive over to Cairo until we both thought to ourselves we'd probably be beheaded once we got to Egypt or something? :sdeek: :dunno:

You'd only get beheaded if you went to Sinai. So, you're good.

Do you have an emergency bag packed in the event your building starts to melt?

Gonna win 'em all!

Last year, they wanted to expand the opening to the underground parking garage and in the process ungrounded the entire building (grounding is not actually something required here, so the embassy usually has to send a crew to do it whenever they identify new apartments). Anyway, long story short, I got mildly electrocuted every time I took so long shaving that the water heater turned on.

Did I tell that one already?

Actual conversation in my office yesterday:

Boss: "The Minister of Health said [the Prosecutor General] has 'light injuries' on his face and shoulder"
Guy down the hall [yelling]: "My contact confirms he died. He's dead."
Boss: "Well. That escalated quickly."

Yeah. I really hope the ISIS affiliate in Sinai or at least Ajnad Misr claim it. It sucks to think that the Sinai group is active in urban areas again or that Ajnad recovered from their boss getting whacked and now have access to huge rough ridin' bombs (this was no "improvised" device; it was legit and tore crap up all over the street...it literally blew the security gates off nine surrounding buildings), but it's preferable to the scenario of a third, new group with this disturbingly high combination of capability and willingness.

In all seriousness, no one would ever target me, but this bombing kind of freaks me out. It doesn't fit the pattern. I like patterns. They comfort me.

We were at the ministry of foreign affairs today. At one point, I was in the elevator with their security detail and a phone rang. One of the bodyguards sheepishly answered it as we all chuckled at the ring tone:

So, the IS affiliate in Sinai kidnapped a Croatian that works for a French oil company a few weeks ago and now they're gonna behead him while Egypt has the spotlight for this new Suez Canal thing. In other words, we can just about put a bow on this thread.
