So people tuck their cars in at night?

It's a sweet car thawb is all.

Have I not posted pics of adorable patch quilt car covers? I'll have to remedy that.

What a mumped up place.  And I used to think of Egypt as having their crap together relative to other countries in the region.

The July 3 anniversary is off to a strong start, with 3 bombs in 3 different locations before I even got out of bed (although one doesn't really count cuz it blew up in a guys face before he could leave his own apartment).

Pfffft. The better question is what can I smuggle back. I can buy crap in the back room of the pharmacy that would launch a corgi over your house.

I'm pleasantly surprised at the state of things in Cairo so far, actually. I mean, crap will probably really take off now that everyone's had evening prayers and broken their fast for the day, but we've only had three deaths from bombings and three from clashes with with police (and only four total bombs).

Of course, there's been 300+ arrests and there's ongoing clashes in at least four locations right now. But all in all, this is a relatively good start to the weekend. I put the arrest total o/u at 550 in our office pool, and I feel really good about that number.

Welp, police have a apparently shot and killed a young female protester in Alexandria. Meanwhile, arrests keep piling up in Cairo and sadly I don't think that most protestors realize that the sort of stuff pictured below is actually encompassed by the new counterterrorism law, meaning they're gonna get 25 to life for blocking the roads.

So how is the O/U number looking? Did you pick the over or under?

ben ji, I feel real good about it. I got a lot of action on both sides, so I think I set it just right. I personally took the over. We've got around 300 reported arrests, and that doesn't even include all the action from late last night AND we have two more days. I think we can break six.

Now, are we gonna see January constitutional referendum numbers? I don't think that's realistic. But if we get another spark, we might get back to that rare 1k+ range.

Also: a rooster chased me this morning during my jog. I got to close to the gate of his little yard. He stopped when I cleared his territory. I respect that.

ALSO, major update for sys: I have a seen a Cairene weasel. Basically, I'm ready to go home now. That was like the last thing on my list.

This might be a silly question, but do they just throw them in jail and let them rot or is there due process and stuff? Seems like with all the turnover in regimes the jails would be getting pretty full. Do new regimes just let everybody out of jail and start fresh when they get power?

Is there interest in an admittedly esoteric Egyptian law post? Because, IMO, it's as fascinating as it is mumped up. U spent an entire afternoon with our legal attaché this week discussing the ins and outs of "insulting the judiciary" and came away wanting more.

But short answer: yes; they just let them rot. Under current law, they can renew their detention every 15-45 days indefinitely (depending on the case) without charges.

Also, Morsi issued a "general amnesty" in Jan 2013 for all the protesters arrested during the 2011 revolution (so long as they that didn't kill people).

And, kind of related, mubarak got pissed during the 2011 revolution so he also released a lot of people. But they were all murderers and stuff and he did it just to spite people who criticized the police and MOI. Sort of a "how do you like me now" move.

And Morsi himself escaped from prison during the 2011 revolution. In a wonderfully Egyptian twist, it is one of the myriad charges he is currently facing in his various and sundry trials.

Egypt would make a great setting a movie.

I imagine them being some hectic choatic place with a cold war villan in charge...Indiana jones/Rambo/Jason Bourne is sent over there for a secret assassination mission(Maybe some high ranking general who is supplying WMD to terrorists?) and BOOM!

He's in the middle of of a riot, gets thrown in jail, escapes, eats a street potatoe,  stalks his target on a scooter, gets arrested and tortured in jail, escapes again, almost dies in a IED attack, finally is ready to kill his target but at the last second his target is kidnapped by Spetznaz soldiers and we start all over again.
