The one this weekend isn't Ros-Lehtinen, but she's a great example. I mean, how many grandstanding visits do you need? No one even knows who the eff you are.

What do super huge Mormon spooks do when these peeps show up?  I bet they are very tempted to drink caffeine.

An editorial in a major paper today advocated hunting down street kids and killing them "like stray dogs".

That, sadly, is a real thing that happened in real life.

I'll start by admitting I know nothing about Egyptian culture or satire.  This kind of sounds to me like Johnathan Swift saying the Irish should eat the poor. (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Modest_Proposal).  Is it possible this was satire?

Nope. Not satire. The paper had to remove it due to laws against "inciting violence".

So, Kerry's in town tomorrow and to celebrate, Egypt just stormed a protest against its fascist protest law. 30 arrested so far, and more missing.

I already have a good feeling about Kerry's meeting with Sisi in the morning.

No. The embassy banned us from using it about this time last year. The last time I rode it to work was June 29.

I am re-reading Palestine and the Arab-Israeli Conflict: A History with Documents by Charles Smith (it is very good and has primary source documents and maps included)

Capital in the 21st Century by Thomas Piketty just arrived and that will be my next read.

I don't know. Never read it. Looks good, though. :dunno:

I'm getting a guided tour of the Egyptian museum for the 73 war next month. I am very much looking forward to it.  I just learned that in Egypt, they still refer to the 67 war as "the setback" (they even changed the date of the official announcement of the presidential elections so it wouldn't coincide with the anniversary).  I also learned this really fun apochryphal tale of how a bunch of Egyptian soldiers went swimming within site of the Israeli scouts to lull them into a false sense of security during the Ramadan war.

haven't read the book, but i'm sure this podcast covers some of the same material:

i've recommended dan carlin and his podcasts(common sense and hardcore history) to several people and so far 100% of them enjoy his stuff. i can think of a lot of pit posters who would as well.

I stumbled across his series on Genghis Khan and got hooked. That was my jogging/traffic listen for weeks.

Alright! First major bombings in Cairo to mark the 1-year anniversary are underway.  I'll keep you posted on the explosion/casualty tallies as we progress, but the terrorists (either ABM or MB or Ajnad Misr or some other group that has a sweet name referring to Egypt as the "land of the quiver") have already set of 3 this morning at the presidential palace:

Bombs: 3
Deaths: 1 (police colonel)
Injuries: 3

Overall, a very strong start that's only gonna get more intense as we approach the big July 3 date of Morsi's ouster.  Bar the doors and board the windows and make sure your booze cabinet's well-stocked (and maybe make sure that go-bag by the door is still ready...). It's gonna be a rough ridin' crazy week.

Oooooh, and in a major upset, it appears that upstart Ajnad Misr has got on the board before heavy favorite Ansar Beit Al Maqdes.  In an impressive flourish, the group even called their shot on twitter last Friday.  ABM will have to be pressing for the equalizer now...

Ajnad Misr: 1
ABM: 0

Already new updated scores, this time with video:

Bombs: 5
Deaths: 3
Injuries: ? (lots)

To clarify, these are outside the rough ridin' presidential palace. And look at this video: These dipshits are all just nonchalantly strolling around and leaning over the goddamn bomb to see how the tech is getting along with defusing it then BOOOM:
