Oh, the Arabic food is great. They do their own food very well, it's just foreign food that's not quite right. They have their own local version of falafel (tamiya) that's made with different beans and breaded or something before it's fried. With tahini and tomato in a pita pocket, that is some outstanding street food (and you can get two of them for just under 50 cents).
You can also find really good restaurants in really weird places. There's an amazing Lebanese place tucked away on the fourth floor of some mall along the river. Plus, if you spend over 100 pounds at brunch (which is like $16), you get a free hookah (not to take home or anything, just to smoke there in the mall at 11 am).
I am still not a fan of this foul madames thing they keep pushing on me at all times of the day, but I keep eating it thinking that maybe I'll figure out what I'm missing about it. I do like the kushari, though.
