Oh, the Arabic food is great. They do their own food very well, it's just foreign food that's not quite right. They have their own local version of falafel (tamiya) that's made with different beans and breaded or something before it's fried. With tahini and tomato in a pita pocket, that is some outstanding street food (and you can get two of them for just under 50 cents).

You can also find really good restaurants in really weird places. There's an amazing Lebanese place tucked away on the fourth floor of some mall along the river. Plus, if you spend over 100 pounds at brunch (which is like $16), you get a free hookah (not to take home or anything, just to smoke there in the mall at 11 am).

I am still not a fan of this foul madames thing they keep pushing on me at all times of the day, but I keep eating it thinking that maybe I'll figure out what I'm missing about it. I do like the kushari, though.

Hey, Cat Fans. Can Confirm that it's been a crazy week for me in Cairo, what with Madam Secretary's visit and all.

FelixRex, I'm sorry I missed you at CityStars! I was eating an Ahhsome Bloosom at the Ootback Steakhouse--you should've stopped by!

Anyway, this is another picture from my trip. Still have only seen FR in passing--hope to meet up soon!

I'm positive this is only going to get better, and I'm equally positive that my two fave parts will be mummy bartender and bicycle pullen.

Just a subtle 20-ft reminder to the people that there's nothing that makes the Army happier than saving little blonde-haired Egyptian babies.

Is it just me or is the guy up front actually walking like an Egyptian?

How's the obesity situation over there?  Could KSUblumkin find a biggin easily or would he be forced to down grade his standards?  Seriously though this facinates me because Mrs. BF is always bitching about the obesity problem here in the states.  My guess is that a fatso over there would be considered normal here.  :dunno:

I haven't got this translation perfect yet, but I'm pretty sure it's a reference to George Clooney.

is that how they write words in egypt?  jfc, why even use that alphabet?  it'd be easier to just draw a picture of the word.

post pictures of street food.

Took some pics tonight. Will get more during the big Ramadan blowout next week. When I asked what this guy was selling, he just repeatedly said "potatoes" and looked at me like I was Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) or Sudani or something (they say that here lol). So, I guess these are just baked potatoes fresh from an oven that looks like it was built from scrap metal lashed to a cart that looks like it was built by Jewish slaves (before the divine carpentry thing) and stoked with "repurposed" 2x4s that still have nails in them. Ramadan kareem.

Is this an isolated baked potato stand, or are these things all over the place.

Oddly, this looks like the sort of getup you see off to the side of the highway driving east of KC on I-70 after you pass Blue Springs.

They're everywhere right now. May be a Ramadan thing though. Not sure.

A baked potato is one of the last things I would think of when thinking to myself that I was hungry and would like to pick up something I could eat while walking somewhere.

Makes as much sense as a drive thru fondu restaurant.
